I am reporting a potential fuel/fire safety defect involving TWO brand-new 2027 Infiniti QX80s. My first QX80 developed a strong raw-gasoline odor after driving/shutdown, especially when parked in my residential garage. I repeatedly reported this to Infiniti. Various explanations were given, including Arizona heat and gasoline formulation. The dealer ultimately exchanged the vehicle. The replacement 2027 QX80 developed substantially the SAME gasoline odor after only about 12 miles from the dealership to my home. I returned it for evaluation. On XXX, Infiniti on Camelback inspected the replacement vehicle. This is no longer based solely on my observation. Their final repair order documents my complaint of “fuel smell coming from the rear driver side wheel area” and, importantly, states their inspector “had a fuel smell at the time of check in and in the shop while sitting in the shop.” The dealer found no codes or visible fuel leak. Therefore, an Infiniti dealer independently detected and documented the fuel odor. Afterward, I spoke with Service Director [XXX]. He told me he had discussed this same issue/condition with an Infiniti field engineer and that Infiniti was aware of it. My understanding was that he was not aware of a specific repair, corrective procedure, or available fix at this time. I am extremely concerned because the same condition occurred in TWO new QX80s, the dealer confirmed the fuel odor, Infiniti field engineering is reportedly aware, yet no cause or fix has been provided. No diagnostic code or visible liquid leak explains why gasoline vapor/odor is present. My concern is fire risk and gasoline-vapor exposure, particularly when parked in an attached residential garage. I request NHTSA investigate the QX80 fuel/EVAP system and similar complaints. Vehicle and documentation are available for inspection. Infiniti Case #XXX. VIN: [XXX]. NHTSA complaint #11762050 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
I purchased a new 2027 Infiniti QX80 Autograph, VIN [XXX], from Infiniti of [XXX] on XXX with approximately 10 miles. On XXX, the day after purchase, I contacted the dealer because I noticed a strong raw gasoline/fuel-vapor odor after driving the vehicle, shutting it off, and parking it inside my garage. The dealer initially advised me to wait 4-5 days because the vehicle was new and suggested the odor might resolve. The odor persisted. The vehicle had approximately 300 miles when the problem continued. I returned to the dealer and was advised that the fuel tank and/or EVAP canister might need replacement and that parts could take weeks, with no definite repair timeline. The suspected affected system is the fuel/EVAP system, including the fuel tank, EVAP canister, vapor-control system, fuel-system venting, or related components. The exact cause is UNKNOWN. The vehicle was available for dealer inspection. I am concerned because a strong raw gasoline/fuel-vapor odor in an enclosed residential garage may indicate abnormal fuel-vapor release and could create a potential fire hazard and expose occupants to fuel vapors. No warning lights or dashboard messages appeared. The primary symptom was the strong gasoline odor after normal driving and shutdown. Because of this unresolved safety concern, the dealer ultimately replaced this vehicle with another new 2027 QX80. The replacement vehicle later developed the same strong gasoline/fuel-vapor odor. I am concerned this may represent a broader fuel/EVAP system defect rather than an isolated problem. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)
NHTSA complaint #11761150 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
I am filing this complaint regarding my replacement 2027 Infiniti QX80 Autograph, VIN [XXX]. My original new 2027 QX80 developed a strong raw gasoline/fuel-vapor odor shortly after purchase. I reported it to Infiniti of Scottsdale on XXX, one day after purchase. The dealer initially advised me to wait 4-5 days because the vehicle was new. The odor persisted, and the dealer later advised that the fuel tank and/or EVAP canister might need replacement. I filed NHTSA Case No. XXXfor that first vehicle. Infiniti of Scottsdale provided this replacement QX80 on XXX. Within one day, the replacement vehicle developed the same strong raw gasoline/fuel-vapor odor, especially after driving, shutting the vehicle off, and parking it inside my garage. I returned the replacement vehicle to the dealer on XXX because of the same condition. The suspected affected system is the fuel/EVAP system, including the fuel tank, EVAP canister, vapor-control system, or related components. The exact cause in the replacement vehicle is UNKNOWN. The vehicle is available for inspection through the dealership. I am concerned that strong gasoline vapors in an enclosed garage could present a potential fire hazard and expose occupants to fuel vapors. No warning lights or dashboard messages appeared. The primary symptom was the strong raw gasoline/fuel-vapor odor. The same condition occurring in two separate brand-new 2027 QX80 vehicles raises concern that this may be a broader fuel/EVAP system safety defect rather than an isolated problem. I apologize in advance if I’m not using the correct form to find out this information, hopefully if this does not reach correct person you can get to correct person for me. There has been a constant gas smell coming from gas tank area since we purchased vehicle in 2/2026. I thought it was just fumes from adding fuel but have since (while reaching in to retrieve grandbaby from back seat, I noticed a strong smell reaching towards driver door and a slight gas smell reaching inside vehicle. We have not been able to locate a gas leak anywhere just the strong gas smell. I’m trying to find out if this is a common occurrence for this vehicle or if there is a recall on it for this problem. Also if there has been a recall is there a way I can find out if the recall has been repaired. Thanks for any information you can provide.

The vehicle loses power due to failure of fuel pump, this causes the vehicle to stall out whilst driving. exactly as described in [XXX] this is a known issue with 2021 Infiniti QX80 and Infiniti tells me there is no open recal for our vehicle. This is unsafe and dangerous. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

However when i call Infinity, they say they cant find anything on my car. it is not?? however your website clearly lists it as a problem for this particular car?? what do i do next.

I have come to notice that when I put gas in my 2015 Infiniti (V8 engine vehicles only), QX80 vehicles. The fuel pressure sensors may not have been sufficiently tightened during production. As a result, the fuel pressure sensor may loosen with vehicle usage and cause a fuel leak.

I have been noticing intermittent gasoline smell outside of vehicle. It has been smelling stronger and more often so I decided to inspect it for the second. I removed the carpet and fuel pump cover and discovered the fuel pump is leaking gas. Now I cannot drive vehicle due to gasoline leaking every time the ignition is on. It is a serious safety and fire hazard. I have not contacted the dealer because it is not under warranty.

The most glaring safety issue caused by below is the SUV will try to move forward on its own while stopped and the brakes pressed that can potentially cause a fender bender. Infiniti/Nissan 5.6L engines have a history of failed or failing viscous cooling fan clutches. This goes back over a decade based on the TSG released by NISMO. When the viscous fan begins to fail, the most glaring symptom is that ECM will compensate by revving up the engine RPM...specially with the AC on. This can cause the RPM to go from around 500 to 1000 RPM during an RPM surge. The surge is enough to move the SUV forward at a stop unless the brake is firmly pressed. On hot weather days, this risk is frequent and significant at a top. This viscous fan issue also puts signficant load on the engine and causes significant power loss to the drive train. This issue does not cause any type of "check engine" light since it is strictly a mechanical failure of the mechanism containing the fluids in the viscous assembly.

I purchased a 2015 Infiniti QX80 on March 31, 2021. Since the purchase, I have only driven it approximately 6,000 miles and the check engine light has already come on. I took it to the dealership and they stated that both Catalytic Converters need to be replaced. This vehicle is only 6 years old; it should not need both Catalytic Converters replaced. Upon research, I discovered that there was a recall on 11/28/2014 for certain 2014-2015 Infiniti Q80 vehicles. My vehicle was not part of this recall, however, I know it should have been because I believe this is the reason for the Catalytic Converter failures on my car.
