Some years were worse than others across the whole industry — a supplier's airbag inflator, a generation of gearboxes, a wave of recalls. Each year here is every car of that vintage on record, added together.

Newer years look lighter simply because their cars have had less time on the road to fail, and the oldest stop at 1993 — the complaint file begins in 1995.
