Owners have filed 186 complaints
about the 2016 BMW X1 with NHTSA between 2016 and 2026.
The largest single group is the other & unspecified.
Across this model's run it ranks 3 of 12 worst.
The letter says how bad. This says what kind — whether this year drew
an unusual number of complaints, unusually dangerous
ones, or failures that arrived unusually early.
The dashed ring is 50 — the national norm. Further out is worse.
Complaint volume — 100
Against the median year of the BMW X1. 50 means typical for this
model; 100 means roughly double.
Severity — 19
3.8% of these complaints
involved a crash, fire, injury or death, against a national rate of
9.7%.
Early failure — 83
49% of failures with a mileage on record happened under
36,000 miles, against a national rate of
29%.
NHTSA files every complaint against a named sub-assembly, not just a
system. This is the difference between knowing it was "the engine" and
knowing which part of it — the list to hand a mechanic.

NHTSA investigations into the 2016 BMW X1
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.
From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Recalls on the 2016 BMW X1
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
United States — NHTSA
19V349000
STRUCTURE:BODY:ROOF AND PILLARS
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain 2016-2019 X1 sDrive28i and X1 xDrive28i vehicles. In the event of a crash where the occupants head contacts the B-pillar, the pillar may not absorb an adequate amount of the impact. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 201, "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact."
Risk: In the event of a crash, the insufficient impact absorption can increase the risk of injury.
16V747000
SEAT BELTS:FRONT:RETRACTOR
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 X1 sDrive28i, X1 xDrive28i, MINI Hardtop 4 Door Cooper, Mini Hardtop 4 Door Cooper S, MINI Cooper Clubman, and Cooper S Clubman, 2017 Rolls-Royce Ghost, and 2016 528i vehicles. The vehicle-sensitive locking mechanism of the seat belt Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) for the driver's seat may not lock as designed. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."
Risk: In the event of a crash where heavy braking is applied, the Emergency Locking Retractor (ELR) may activate when the occupant is more forward in the seat, possibly increasing the risk of injury.
15V887000
STEERING:GEAR BOX (OTHER THAN RACK AND PINION)
BMW of North America, LLC (BMW) is recalling one model year 2016 MINI Cooper Hardtop 2 Door vehicle manufactured November 24, 2015, and one BMW X1 Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) manufactured October, 19 2015. The steering gearbox may have been manufactured with incorrect parts.
Risk: A gearbox malfunction may cause a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 2024544587,250 units in Canada
Label
Issue: On certain vehicles, the tire and loading information label does not list that there is no spare tire in both official languages. The label reads as "NONE" when it should read as "NONE / AUCUN". Canadian regulations require the information to be listed on the label in both English and French. Safety Risk: This error does not affect vehicle safety. Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. The company has corrected the tire and loading information label for all new vehicles.
Recall 20192763,041 units in Canada
Seats And Restraints
Issue: A problem with the driver’s seat belt could cause it not to lock-up as designed during braking or in a crash. Safety Risk: A seat belt that does not lock properly in a crash could cause an increased risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to replace the driver’s seat belt assembly.
Recall 20170453,253 units in Canada
Airbag
On certain vehicles, the trim of the instrument panel which covers the passenger frontal airbag may not have been manufactured to specification. This could affect proper deployment of the passenger frontal airbag in a crash (where deployment is warranted), which could increase the risk of injury to the front passenger occupant. Correction: Dealers will inspect, and if necessary, replace the instrument panel.
Recall 20161071 units in Canada
Seats And Restraints
On certain vehicles, the screws securing the seat backrest and lower seat belt anchor to the passenger front seat may be incorrectly installed or missing due to a manufacturing process error. In the event of a crash, the seat and seatbelt may not work as intended, which could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will replace the screws that secure the seat backrest and the lower seat belt anchor on the passenger front seat.

2016 BMW X1 NEW SAV EQUIPPED WITH COMFORT ACCESS . APPROACHED LOCKED PARKED HATCHBACK AND DEPRESSED HATCH EXTERIOR LOCK HANDLE. HATCH OPENED TO MID-HEIGHT OPENING TO ALLOW 6 FT TALL PERSON TO GET INTO THE TRUNK HATCH AREA. WITHIN APPROXIMATELY TEN SECONDS, LOUD WARNING SOUND PLAYED WHILE HATCH STARTED TO AUTOMATICALLY CLOSE. THIS WAS STARTLING AND UNEXPECTED. TRIED TO REMOVE MYSELF QUICKLY FROM VEHICLE AND WAS STRUCK BY CLOSING TAILGATE. SUFFERED BLEEDING FOREHEAD GASH AND NEEDED SEVERAL STITCHES AT THE EMERGENCY ROOM. DID NOT HIT ANY BUTTONS ON THE VEHICLE OR THE REMOTE KEY. ALSO DID NOT DO ANY FOOT WIGGLE DANCE OR KICKING IN PROXIMITY OF REAR BUMPER TO ACTIVATE CLOSURE OF HATCH TAILGATE (THIS FEATURE IS SILLY BUT I CAN APPRECIATE IT BEING UTILIZED TO OPEN THE HATCH, BUT NOT TO CLOSE IT IN ANY CIRCUMSTANCE DUE TO SAFETY CONCERNS). I WAS GIVEN AN INDIRECT IMPRESSION AFTER THE INCIDENT THAT BECAUSE THE CAR WAS ARMED WITH THE ALARM SYSTEM THAT PERHAPS IT TREATED THE OPENING OF THE HATCH AS AN INTRUSION THEREBY CLOSING ITSELF. HOWEVER I CANNOT SUBSTANTIATE THIS AS I DO NOT WANT TO SACRIFICE FURTHER INJURY ). UNCLEAR OF WHY THIS HAPPENED BUT IN THE INTEREST OF SAFETY THE AUTO CLOSURE SHOULD NOT PHYSICALLY OCCUR UNLESS A PHYSICAL BUTTON IS DEPRESSED. THERE ARE FOUR SUCH BUTTONS ON THIS VEHICLE: ON THE LOWER DRIVERS DOOR, TWO ON THE INSIDE RIGHT HAND EDGE OF THE TAILGATE, ANOTHER ON THE REMOTE KEY. I HOPE THIS NOTICE WILL MAKE OTHER X1 USERS AWARE OF THIS CONCERN. I DO HOPE THE MANUFACTURER WILL PROGRAM OR DESIGN A FIX TO ADDRESS THE CONCERN. IT IS A PROBLEM AND PERHAPS A HIDDEN DANGER AS ONE DOES NOT EXPECTED TO BE MAMED OR INJURED BY THEIR CAR IN THIS MANNER. BMW NJ CORPORATE WAS INFORMED AND SUGGESTED TO WORK OUT A FIX DIRECTLY WITH THE BMW DEALER. MANUFACTURER SHOULD REDESIGN FEATURES TOWARDS CUSTOMER SAFETY.

About 24 months back the sunroof curtain of my BMW X1 started having problems when I retract or operate it. It used to make stretching noises when I tried to open my sunroof and after a few times I heard a crackling noise and before I can stop it the curtain tore. Initially it was a small tear, so it did not bother much but over time the curtain completely left the guide/rail on one side and started sagging. Given it is a sunroof the curtain is as long as the vehicle and so now it is sagging to a point that it obstructs driver's visibly in back mirror. BMW won't do anything about it saying it is out of warranty and ultimately to avoid accidents I had to remove the curtain completely. I also tried getting it fixed, but the issue is not just the curtain but the rails of the curtain which is a non-replaceable part :( I would have to replace full sunshade assembly which is upwards of $1600. Also, it seems to be a common problem with these vehicles. Here are more examples of it: [XXX] . Please help me and other drivers be safe on the road. After I got my 2016 BMW X1 from Service, I heard a rough sound when I reversed the vehicle from Park. After a few days, I noticed my vehicle showing an error saying "Secure Vehicle against rolling" every time I parked the vehicle and advising me to use my hand brake. I then did some search on the web and finally took it for servicing at BMW Rockville, Maryland where the service department is managed by Auto Nation. They gave me a quote for around $2500 to fix this issue. Based on the research of this issue on the web, it looks like a $10 spring malfunction causes this issue. I have less than 55,000 miles on my vehicle. The transmission lock sensor is defective in this car design- the spring in the gearshift assembly that contacts the transmission lock sensor has a faulty design and is prone to breaking. This leads to a warning in the car that the transmission lock has not occurred when the car is in park (although it is actually functioning). This creates a "false alarm" situation that then does not allow the user to know if the transmission is truly locked in park This defect has occurred in my car as diagnosed by both dealer and independent mechanic. This is a common and known defect amongst X1 owners (as well as the mechanical sibling Mini Cooper). It is also well known amongst the BMW dealer service; It should be consider a recall defect
