Driver Assist & Collision Avoidance across every BMW X5 year
While using the Park Assist feature on my 2024 BMW X5, the vehicle was under active system control during a parking maneuver. The system directed the vehicle in reverse and struck an object. I did not apply the accelerator. The vehicle was operating under Park Assist guidance at the time of impact. The collision resulted in damage to the rear bumper. I have reported this to BMW North America and requested a diagnostic scan to retrieve fault codes from the Park Assist module. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The Park Assist system (automated parking assistance) malfunctioned during an active parking maneuver. While the system was in control of the vehicle, it directed the car in reverse and struck an object. The vehicle is available for inspection upon request. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The vehicle moved autonomously and struck an object without driver input, resulting in a collision. A pedestrian, cyclist, or other vehicle in the path could have been seriously injured. The incident demonstrates the system cannot be trusted to safely detect and avoid obstacles while in control of the vehicle. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Not yet. The vehicle is being brought to the selling dealer for a diagnostic scan to retrieve fault codes from the Park Assist module. This report is being filed prior to that inspection. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Not yet. BMW North America has been notified. Dealer inspection is pending. Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No warning lamps or messages appeared prior to the incident. The system gave no indication of malfunction before directing the vehicle into the object.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: WARNINGS
Three weeks ago the instrument cluster indicated a failure of the front collision avoidance system and said to have the vehicle examined by the dealer. I dropped it off two weeks ago and have been informed that they're having trouble updating the instrument panel and other component software. Other times the instrument panel would go dark for several seconds while driving. There is an open recall on X5 models produced from 01/24. Mine is not included as it was produced 11/23. Recall is 24V-138

The Integrated Brake System and Dynamic Safety Control both malfunctioned, not turning on. The car is totaled, so I don't think anything is available for inspection. There was water on the highway, and the car ended up going off the road into the grass and rolled over a few times before landing at the bottom of the ditch 100ft away. The car was not inspected because I was not aware of the major recall until I started looking into it. There was a snapshot of the DTC codes two weeks before the incident and there were codes specifically for the IB system as noted in the recall. There may have been one or two times throughout driving the car beforehand that a error light popped up, but then it disappeared almost immediately after.
NHTSA complaint #11688104 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
A car from the other side made an illegal left turn in front of me, and I braked very early, yet still slid into them. The car had been inspected at the time at the collision center, and had DTC codes from before repair and after repair, showing the Integrated Brake systems had failures before and after. There was no mention of the results of the inspection until I asked after another braking incident occurred two weeks later. There were moments where a light would pop up for a second, then disappear. It may have happened only once.

I have recently experienced sudden phantom braking on my vehicle on three separate occasions, following a recall on a brake module that was taken care of at the dealer. Each time this happened at highway speed for no apparent reason. The dealer, BMW of Buffalo has had the car for over a week without finding the problem. They have been in constant touch with corporate, trying to diagnose this. No luck! I will not drive this Vehicle, nor can I in good conscie nce trade it in to another dealer. I could be held liable. I'm wondering what you may have on record since there are reports on the web of similiar occurances

On July 23, 2025, at around 10:50 AM, shortly after leaving my community and driving onto a main road, my BMW X5 suddenly experienced what felt like an emergency braking event and completely lost power. I was driving at approximately 40 mph when this happened. It caused surrounding vehicles to honk and make sudden maneuvers to avoid a collision, creating a dangerous situation. I was extremely frightened and shocked, and for a moment I panicked because there were cars all around me. With the help of a friend and my family, I contacted BMW Roadside Assistance. It took nearly five hours before my vehicle was finally towed about nine miles away to the Irvine BMW dealership for service. This incident has caused me extreme emotional distress, sleeplessness, and serious concerns about the safety and quality of the vehicle. I am seeking help and an official investigation into this issue.

I received a recall notice for Integrated Brake Failure on February 2024, but the manufacturer has still not provided a remedy or parts as of July 4th 2025. I contacted the dealer and was told there is no ETA for the repair. I believe this delay is unreasonable, and I am concerned about the safety implications of continuing to drive the vehicle

BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS
Rear cross traffic alert system never works whenever a car is approaching. Only works when it is too late. Definitely no pedestrian alert. Much cheaper vehicles with this feature actually sound an alert before any emergency activation. Dealer states system is working according to spec. BMW Forum has many complaints with this system that cost extra $s on my suv. THIS IS A SAFETY ISSUE & a Manufacturer quality issue.

I purchased this vehicle under my company to rent and make some extra income for my family. We also had a baby in August of 2024 so wanted a larger vehicle for the family. We purchased the vehicle on Feb 20,2024 and the recall was issued on Feb 14,2024. We were sold a lemon. I went to the dealership and told them they said they will have a solution in a year. Still no solution and I still cannot rent my vehicle because it has an open recall. Me and my family do not feel safe in this vehicle. Please can someone help. I am willing to return the car or even exchange for a vehicle that doesn’t have a recall as soon as I drive off the lot. Thank you.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: REARVIEW SYSTEM BRAKING
The rear cross traffic sensor does not warn when there is oncoming traffic. It puts me, my passengers and other cars at a safety risk. BMW Palm Springs investigated and tested and states that the system is not providing any error messages. But in physical testing the system does not work as described in the BMW marketing video [XXX] . I have owned this car for six months and the rear cross traffic sensor has never worked. In February,2024[12th]. BMW FILED A RECALL NOTICE ABOUT A DEFECTIVE PART IN THE BRAKING SYSTEMS OF 2023,2024 models 5series, 7 series, x1,x5,x6,x7 and Xm. My vehicle was made in mid March and delivered early April. Supposedly according to my source , BMW received replacement parts from the vendor and production continued. I’m not sure if it ever stopped. The problem is BMW NEVER TESTED THESE NEW PARTS TO SEE IF THEY FIXED THE PROBLEM. THIS IS CLEARLY NEGLIGENCE ON THEIR PART. THE DEGREE THE LAWYERS CAN DETERMINE. NOW AROUND August12, BMW ISSUED A STOP SALE ON ALL THESE CARS INCLUDING SOME 2025 MODELS. ONLY BECAUSE I READ A USER BLOG ON LINE ABOUT THIS AND CHECKED MY VIN WAS I AWARE IT AFFECTED MY CAR. NO NOTICE FROM BMW. This was not a don’t drive notice. The effect on owners is they can’t trade or sell their cars. There does not seem to be a requirement that BMW file a STOP SALE order with NHTSA. I DON’T BELIEVE THEY FILED A SUBSEQUENT NOTICE TO THE FEBRUARY FILING. Every day there are recall notices. Most are narrow in scope but this will involve umpteen thousands of cars. There is no end date because they don’t know when a new part will be available. Once available it could be many months before owners are able to have the problem part replaced. It takes 2+ hours a car. The dealers are already overwhelmed because of limited space and mechanics. If these companies don’t get fined for this type of behavior, it will not stop. I am talking millions in fines. The FAA does it. More people drive than fly yet it seems the Federal Transportation Department does not have or doesn’t want to exercise this option. Just look at what has been going on for over 15 years with Takata airbags which could be fatal if opened. Just today 577,000 cars from Ford and Mazda were issued a DO NOT DRIVE notice on the news. Granted they were for older models but people who need transportation will still drive. Why hasn’t the government over the past 15+ years stopped the buying of them.

While driving on a highway, several lights illuminated on my dashboard instrument cluster, including the ABS light, a red BRAKE light, a yellow PARK light, and the dynamic stability control light. The message center reported to "drive carefully" however none of this appeared urgent. I decided I should maybe test my breaks as I was curious what the problem was. I then proceeded to gently tap my brakes to see what all of this meant, and to my horror, my brake pedal went completely to the ground with no brakes initiated. Thankfully, I was able to move over onto the shoulder and coast to a stop and place my car in Park. The emergency brake would not initiate. This could have ended terribly awful.
NHTSA complaint #11603555 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
The Integrated Brake system is not working properly. Received a recall notice in April 2024 and it is now 3 months later and it is still not fixed. Visited the BMW dealership and discussed the matter with them and they offered no information as to when it would be fixed. We just have to wait until they notify us. BMW stated that they will only fix it if the dashboard warning came on and they will look into fixing the problem. Why do I have to wait for the problem to become an issue before they address it. I think by then it might be too late. We asked for a loaner since they can't get it fixed in a timely manner and I was told, "just to drive the car". This is an accident waiting to happen. So, I am asking the NHTSA to assist in correcting this issue. I know I can't be the only one in this situation.
NHTSA complaint #11602353 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.
This recall was issued Feb.21 2024, to this date BMW has not fixed the problem. Called them, and they were unwilling to commit to anything. All they said was to wait for the fix. As it stands, the vehicle is unsafe to drive, it CANNOT BE SOLD OR TRADED. I would either like them to conduct a BUYBACK OR FIX THE PROBLEM.

BACK OVER PREVENTION: WARNINGS
We purchased the car June 3rd 2023. Since purchase the car has given a Check engine light over6 times and the Expansion Valves have been replaced. It has spend 50+ days in service since purchase. On 1/26/24 the High Voltage system light cam eon and the car is back for repairs for 7 days and still not resolved. The automated parking systems are prone to errors and have nearly cased accidents. Luckily I intervened and stopped using them. The eSim features that are advertised do not work. I have spoken to BMW NA and hey have not been helpful.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROL
Driving 75mph on I90 westbound from Spokane to Seattle at about 9 am on 09/24/23, cruise control on with assisted driving. Red alert on screen then car suddenly went from 75 to 20 in a few seconds, pulled over on side and then able to drive again. Luckily, no one was behind when this happened but easily could have been rear ended. No pre warnings were issued on dashboard and not wearing sunglasses. Have talked to BMW but have not had chance to take vehicle in yet.
