Recalls on the 2014 Cadillac XTS

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

14V541000

PARKING BRAKE

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2015 Cadillac XTS vehicles manufactured February 14, 2012, to August 22, 2014, and 2014-2015 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured November 5, 2012, to September 2, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the electronic parking brake piston actuation arm may not fully retract causing the brake pads to stay partially engaged.

Risk: Brake pads that remain partially engaged with the rotors may cause excessive brake heat that may result in a fire.

14V518000

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Cadillac XTS vehicles manufactured April 11, 2013, to June 27, 2013, and 2014 Chevrolet Impala vehicles manufactured May 13, 2013, to November 5, 2013. The affected vehicles may have left the factory with the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) set to "manufacturing mode."

Risk: In manufacturing mode, the vehicle's air bags will not deploy in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury.

14V409000

STEERING

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2014 Buick Regal, Cadillac XTS, Chevrolet Camaro and Chevrolet Impala vehicles. Improperly torqued fasteners may cause the steering intermediate shaft and the steering gear and/or the lower control arm and the lower ball joint to separate.

Risk: If any of the components separate, the vehicle may have a loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash.

14V116000

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:POWER ASSIST:VACUUM:HOSES, LINES/PIPING, AND FITTINGS

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Cadillac XTS vehicles manufactured February 14, 2012, through March 7, 2014. In the affected vehicles, a cavity plug on the brake booster pump connector may dislodge allowing corrosion of the brake booster pump relay connector.

Risk: The corrosion of the brake booster pump relay connector may cause a resistive short and melt the connector, increasing the risk of a fire.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2014380 6,137 units in Canada

Brakes

Certain vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 135 - Brake Systems. The electronic parking brake may not fully release, which could cause the brakes to drag. In this condition, the parking brake indicator also may not illuminate even though the parking brake is engaged, contrary to the requirements of the standard. Brake drag could affect vehicle acceleration and cause undesired deceleration, excessive brake heat, and premature wear to some brake components. If the brake drag is significant or if the vehicle is operated for an extended period of time in this condition, there is a potential for the rear brakes to generate significant heat, smoke and sparks. Correction: Dealers will update the electronic parking brake software.

Recall 2014278 1 units in Canada

Steering

On certain vehicles, the steering gear to steering column intermediate shaft connection bolts and front lower control arm ball joint bolts may not have been tightened to specification. If these bolts were to loosen, a loss of steering control could result, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will inspect the joints and verify fastener torque.

Recall 2014082 1,469 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles, a buildup of pressure in the brake booster pump wiring harness could dislodge sealing plugs from an electrical connector and allow contaminates to enter the brake booster pump relay connector. This could result in corrosion and cause a short in the connector, potentially resulting in a fire and increasing the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

SERVICE BRAKES

SHORT VERSION: WHILE DRIVING APPROX. 55MPH, REAR BRAKES LOCKED UP. WE PULLED OVER INTO A PARKING LOT AND THE BRAKES WERE SMOKING AND A SMALL FIRE APPEARED ON EACH REAR BRAKE. A PERSON WHO SAW US PULL INTO THE PARKING LOT RAN OVER AND PUT OUT THE FIRE ON EACH BRAKE. LONG VERSION: APPROX. 2-WEEKS PRIOR TO THE ABOVE INCIDENT, THE BRAKE WARNING LIGHT APPEARED ON THE DASH BOARD. I IMMEDIATELY PULLED OVER AND CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND MADE AN APPOINTMENT. WHEN I RESTARTED THE CAR, THE LIGHT WAS NO LONGER ILLUMINATED. AFTER THE APPOINTMENT, THE DEALER STATED THEY COULD NOT FIND ANYTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM. APPROX. 1-WEEK LATER, I WAS PARKED IN A PARKING LOT. I STARTED MY CAR, RELEASED THE PARKING BRAKE, PUT THE CAR IN DRIVE BUT THE CAR WOULD NOT MOVE. IT APPEARED THE BRAKES WERE LOCKED. I CALLED THE ONSTAR SYSTEM, THE RAN A DIAGNOSTIC TEST AND FOUND NO ISSUES. I SHUT THE CAR OFF AND RESTARTED THE CAR AND THE PROBLEM DISAPPEARED. A FEW DAYS LATER, MY WIFE AND I WERE DRIVING IN UP STATE NEW YORK WHEN THE INCIDENT ABOVE OCCURRED. AFTER RETURNING TO OHIO, WE TOOK THE CAR TO THE DEALER WE PURCHASED THE CAR FROM. THEY CALLED YESTERDAY AND SAID THEY REPLACED THE BRAKE PADS BUT FOUND NOTHING WRONG WITH THE BRAKING SYSTEM. AT THIS POINT, WE ASSUME THERE IS A DEEPER PROBLEM WITH THE VEHICLE ELECTRONIC BRAKING SYSTEM AND CURRENTLY NOT ACCEPTING THE CAR BACK. WE HAVE CONTACTED GM AND OUR CASE NUMBER IS [XXX]. AT 5:15AM, 5/29/14, MY XTS WHILE PARKED IN MY RESIDENCE DRIVEWAY SPONTANEOUSLY CAUGHT FIRE. THE FIRE EMANATED FROM THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT AND DESTROYED THE ENTIRE FRONT 1/2 OF THE VEHICLE. NORTH FARMINGDALE FD RESPONDED AND EXTINGUISHED THE FIRE. NO INJURIES WERE CAUSED. THE NASSAU COUNTY PD AND NASSAU FIRE MARSHALLS OFFICE ALSO RESPONDED AND AFTER A VISUAL AND PHOTO EXAMINATION DETERMINED THAT THE FIRE STARTED IN THE AREA OF THE BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP. CADILLAC HAD ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS VEHICLE TYPE ON 4/12/14 WITH THE WARNING THAT A DEFECT IN THE BRAKE BOOSTER PUMP COULD CAUSE A FIRE AND IN MY CASE THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT OCCURRED. THE OIL SPILLAGE AND VEHICLE DEBRIS ALSO CAUSED EXTENSIVE DAMAGE TO THE DRIVEWAY RESULTING IN A COMPLETE REPLACEMENT OF THE DRIVEWAY.

STEERING

I was driving north on I-65 traveling about 65mph and the Rear Air Suspension failed and dropped to the point the tires were about 1 inch (2.54 cm) from the finder wells. I lost control of the car, the rear end was bouncing, almost causing me to crash. Not only that, but I had to drive it home with the hazards on, while driving on I-65, people passing me at 70mph. Cadillac knows about this fault and refuses to fix it. They want to charge you $1,000 plus to replace the entire system. My Cadillac was just at the dealership about 8 days prior to this incident for mileage scheduled maintenance, in which the suspension is one of the things they were supposed to have checked out. Someone if they haven't already is going to get killed when this happens. There is no warning.

AFTER I GOT TO WORK AND PARKED MY CAR I WENT BACK TO GET MY COFFEE MUG WHEN IT APPEARED THAT MY CAR WAS LOWERED TO THE GROUND AS IF ALL THE AIR WENT OUT OF ALL OF THE TIRES. THE AIR SUSPENSION I SUPPOSE. ALSO, MY DISPLAY SCREEN HAS GONE OUT TWICE SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR SIX YEARS AGO.
