When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

Recalls on the 2001 Daewoo Leganza

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

ON CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES, THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR MAY MELT RESULTING IN A BURNING SMELL AND VISIBLE SMOKE, WHICH MAY SUBSEQUENTLY LEAD TO THE MELTING OF THE CAMSHAFT COVER AND THE CAMSHAFT POSITION SENSOR WIRE HARNESS.

Risk: THIS COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE AN UNDERHOOD FIRE.

VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH REQUIREMENTS OF FMVSS NO. 201, "OCCUPANT PROTECTION IN INTERIOR IMPACT." THESE VEHICLES EXCEED THE MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE HEAD INJURY CRITERION VALUE SPECIFIED IN THE STANDARD FOR PASSENGER-SIDE A-PILLAR TARGET LOCATION.

Risk: CONSEQUENTLY, IN A CRASH, THE FRONT SEAT PASSENGER COULD SUFFER INCREASED HEAD INJURY FROM CONTACT WITH THE PASSENGER A PILLAR (FORWARD MOST ROOF SUPPORT).

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2004350 4,219 units in Canada

Engine

On certain vehicles, the camshaft position sensor may melt resulting in a burning smell and visible smoke, which may subsequently lead to the melting of the camshaft cover and camshaft position sensor wire harness. This could possibly cause an under hood fire. Correction: Dealers will replace the camshaft position sensor and install an additional fuse.

Recall 2001150 1,433 units in Canada

Other

Certain passenger vehicles fail to comply with requirements of C.M.V.S.S. 201, "Occupant Protection in Interior Impact." These vehicles exceed the maximum allowable Head Injury Criterion value specified in the standard for passenger-side A-pillar target location. Consequently, in a crash, the front seat passenger could suffer increased head injury from contact with the passenger A pillar (forward most roof support). Correction: Dealers will install padding to the A pillar to reduce the risk of injury in a crash.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

IN SEPTEMBER 2004 I RECEIVED NOTIFICATION OF A RECALL RELATING TO THE CAM SHAFT POSITION SENSOR IN MY 2001 DAEWOO LEGANZA. THE FAULTY DEVICE WAS SUPPOSED TO CAUSE THE CHECK ENGINE WARNING LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE (WHICH IT DID), AND A BURNING SMELL AND/OR VISIBLE SMOKE (WHICH ALSO OCCURRED). THE LETTER MENTIOND A RANGE OF VIN NUMBERS OF VEHICLES INCLUDED IN THE RECALL AND MY CAR IS WELL WITHIN THAT RANGE. I TOOK THE CAR TO AN AUTHORIZED SERVICE CENTER FOR THE REPAIR AND WAS TOLD THAT, DESPITE THE FACT THAT THE PROBLEM RESULTING IN THIS RECALL WAS EXACTLY WHAT WAS HAPPENING TO MY CAR, THIS WAS NOT A COVERED SERVICE BECAUSE THE LOT NUMBER OF THE PART THEY REMOVED WAS NOT WITHIN THE AFFECTED LOT OF DEFECTIVE PARTS. THE LETTER I RECEIVED MADE NO MENTION OF SPECIFIC LOTS AFFECTED, BUT IT DID CLEARLY STATE, "THIS SERVICE WILL BE PERFORMED FOR YOU AT NO CHARGE..." I WAS CHARGED FOR THE SERVICE AND THE DAEWOO CUSTOMER ASSISTANCE CENTER REPRESENTATIVE CLAIMS NO LIABILITY FOR THE FAULTY PART AND REPAIRS WHEN I SPOKE TO THEM ON THE AFTERNOON OF MARCH 8,2005.
