STRUCTURE

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 MPH, the vehicle drove over a slight bump in the road. The contact stated that the vehicle bounced, and then there was an abnormal banging sound coming from the rear of the vehicle. The contact recently had work completed on the exhaust system. The contact took the vehicle back to the independent mechanic who had performed the exhaust repair. The mechanic raised the vehicle on the lift and became aware that the rear passenger’s and driver's side cross members, supports for the shock absorbers, and the rear sub frame had extensive corrosion. The contact was advised by the mechanic that the banging sound was coming from the shock absorbers striking the bed of the truck while driving over the bump in the roadway. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 78,569.

NHTSA complaint #11690613 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.

Waterboro, ME

STRUCTURE:BODY

The vehicle’s frame has severely rusted to the point of structural compromise. My certified mechanic determined on December 10, 2024, that the frame could not pass the state safety inspection due to advanced corrosion. Welding is now required to restore structural integrity. The truck has remained inoperable and sidelined since that date. The frame is available for inspection upon request, and I have photos, repair invoices, and a mechanic’s written evaluation. This same frame was previously reworked by GMC twice: May 7, 2018 – Frame treated for premature rust. November 4, 2019 – Frame recoated after prior treatment failed due to improper descaling. Despite these reworks under GMC direction, the issue has progressed to a dangerous level. The structural integrity of the frame is compromised. A severely rusted frame puts occupants and others on the road at risk in the event of a collision, towing, or even regular driving. A weakened frame could lead to loss of vehicle control, failure to protect occupants in a crash, or catastrophic breakage of suspension or driveline components while in motion. Yes. The problem has been confirmed by an independent certified mechanic, who inspected the frame and advised that the rust is beyond surface level and requires welding to repair. They refused to weld during winter due to safety concerns and advised that the truck could not be driven or pass inspection in its current state. The vehicle was previously serviced under GMC’s direction in 2018 and 2019 by a GMC dealer (Weird GMC) to address early frame corrosion. However, the current failure has not yet been inspected by GMC directly since becoming undriveable in late 2024. I have reached out to GMC Customer Assistance and am awaiting a response. There were no dashboard warning lights or alerts for this issue. The only indications were visible signs of rust, which rapidly worsened after the 2019 rework. My mechanic noted signs of significant corrosion during routine servicing

STRUCTURE:BODY

I am the original owner of a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500 (VIN: [XXX] ) and began experiencing serious mechanical and electrical issues while the vehicle was still under warranty around 40,000 miles. These included engine RPM fluctuations at idle, vibrations under acceleration above 65 MPH, and intermittent misfiring — all symptoms that are now believed to be early indicators of defective lifters or valve train components. I also experienced repeated electrical failures including a rear turn signal malfunction due to melting/corroded taillight sockets, a thumping rear-end noise, differential knocking, and body panel issues (hood lifting at highway speeds). These were reported multiple times to authorized GMC dealers (Mike Haggerty GMC and Rizza GMC), but I was told there was no issue or no repairs were made. GM refused to assist when I escalated the issue in 2017 via a detailed email, despite all problems occurring within the warranty period. I’m now dealing with a persistent ticking sound from the engine and loss of power, which matches widespread reports of lifter failure in GM’s 5.3L/6.2L V8 engines. These failures pose both a mechanical and safety risk due to stalling, misfiring, and potential electrical fires (in my case, from a failed taillight socket). A class action lawsuit ([XXX], et al. v. General Motors LLC) has been filed regarding these known defects, yet GM has not issued a recall. I’m filing this complaint to add my case to the record and urge NHTSA to investigate these issues. I have full documentation of the original complaint and am willing to provide it upon request. INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

While driving on the highway, the passenger shock mount that is welded to the rear forward mounted crossmember snapped off due to rust. I have taken many pictures of the damage. I am a Master Certified ASE and Ford technician with my PA Emissions and Safety inspection licenses. I inspected the damage to my truck at my shop and removed the bed. I found further rust and damage at the drivers frame and rear shock mount at the rearward mounted crossmember. The whole rear frame section is rotting away. This caused the vehicle to sway heavily and change the driving attributes of the vehicle. I have not contacted police or the insurance company. There were no warning lamps of any kind.

This truck has a 5 star crash rating, but is rusting very badly due to a defect in the design of the truck. There are tracks in the roof that lead down behind the cab. The water rolls down and then there is an indentation that holds the water. This water holding creates rust, horrible rust. The rockers, frame and the fuel pump rusted badly due to this defect. The 5 star crash rating comes into huge doubt due to such rust from the design defect.

The contact owns a 2014 GMC Sierra 1500. The contact stated while he was under the vehicle performing a routine check-up, he noticed that the frame of the vehicle looked rusted. The contact poked his finger into the subframe under the rear passenger’s side causing his finger to go into the frame of the vehicle. An appointment was scheduled with the dealer for the vehicle to be inspected. The manufacturer was contacted and advised the contact that the vehicle should be diagnosed. The failure mileage was 69,073.

AFTER ABOUT 5-10 MINUTES OF DRIVING THERE WAS A 'BURNING PLASTIC' SMELL AND ABOUT 1-2 MINUTES AFTER THAT A LOUD BANG (ALMOST LIKE A GUNSHOT) AFTER PULLING OVER, I LOOKED AROUND TO FIND THE LEFT SIDE OF THE BACK WINDOW WAS BLOWN OUT. LONG STORY SHORT, I CALLED THE DEALER TO SET UP SERVICE AND WAS TOLD THEY PERFORMED THE RECALL FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM ON MY GMC.....I DON'T THINK IT WAS EITHER DONE OR THE FIX DIDN'T SOLVE IT. I CAN PROVIDE PICTURES TOMORROW.....AND I WAS DRIVING DOWN A CITY STREET AND IN MOTION - THE STREET WAS NOT BUMPY, IN FACT IT WAS SNOW COVERED. I THINK THIS COULD HAVE BEEN A FIRE HAZARD JUDGING BY THE HORRIFIC SMELL.

FOR OVER 45K MILES I HAVE COMPLAINED OFF A VIBRATION COMING FROM THE REAR OF MY GMC SIERRA AT 65 TO 75 MILES PER HOUR. MY SUPPORTING DEALER THAT I PURCHASED IT FROM CAN'T FIND THE PROBLEM AND IS MOST LIKELY OUT OF BUSINESS.THIS IS AN ONGOING ISSUE. RECENTLY I WENT UNDER THE TRUCK TO FIND THE ENTIRE FRAME IS RUSTED FROM THE GAS TANK BACK TO THE REAR OFF THE VEHICLE AROUND THE SPARE TIRE AND ELSEWHERE. WHATS WRONG WITH GM MANUFACTURING, ARE THEY THAT CHEAP, THAT NO PAINT IS PLACE ON THE FRAME. ADDITIONALLY THE CHROME WHEELS THAT CAME WITH THE VEHICLE ARE CORRODING YET ANOTHER CHEAP PROCESS THAT GM REFUSES TO ADDRESS. MIND YOU I HAVE ALWAYS FIXED AND REPAIRED MY OWN VEHICLES. I HAVE WASHED THIS VEHICLE SO MUCH BY USING A COLD WATER HOSE UNDER THE VEHICLE AND THE TOP AS WELL TO GET THE SALT AND BRINE USED BY THE NORTHERN STATES OFF THE CAR AND YET I STILL GET THE CORROSION. HOW DO I GET GM. TO FIX THE WRONGS THEY HAVE PRODUCED.

WHILE DRIVING DOWN A RESIDENTIAL STREET APPROACHING A STOP SIGN INTERSECTION I MERGED INTO THE CENTER OF ST TO PASS A TRASHCAN AND IN THE PROCESS OF RETURNING TO MY CORRECT POSITION ON THE ROAD I SUDDENLY HAD NO STEERING. PANICKING FROM THE LOSS I PRESSED MY BRAKES AN ATTEMPT TO BRING VEHICLE TO A STOP BUT WAS UNSUCCESSFUL BECAUSE THE TIRES BEGAN A SLIDE ONCE NOTICING THE TRACTION LOSS I PROCEEDED TO RELEASE BRAKES AND REAPPLY IN HOPES OF GAINING TRACTION THE BRIEF RELIEF FROM BRAKES CAUSED THE VEHICLE TO REGAIN TRACTION AND WHILE I STILL HAVE NO CONTROL OVER STEERING, THE VEHICLE JERKS TOWARDS THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE ROAD AND THE BRAKES BEING REAPPLIED THE VEHICLE CONTINUES TO SLIDE OFF PAVEMENT MAKING CONTACT WITH STOP SIGN AND TELEPHONE POLE.

MY VEHICLE HAS SIDE BOARD STEPS. THE TREAD PATTERN IS SUCH THAT WHEN WET OR ICY THE STEP IS A VIRTUAL SKID PAD. WHEN YOU PLACE WEIGHT ON THE FOOT ON THE TREAD IT IMMEDIATELY SLIPS OUT FROM UNDER YOUR POSITION. LAST YEAR I BROKE A FOOT WHEN I SLIPPED AND THIS YEAR IT WAS AN ANKLE. TREAD DESIGN NEEDS TO BE IMPROVED AND TURNED 90. AS DESIGNED THERE IS NO TRACTION PROTECTION. JUST THE OPPOSITE, IT PROMOTES LACK OF TRACTION RESULTING IN SLIPPING AND FALLING.

THERE IS A SERVICE BULLETIN FROM GM ABOUT FRAME RUST ON ALL GMC 2014 1500 SIERRA AND CHEVY 2014 SILVERADO 1500 LIGHT DUTY PICK UP TRUCKS. THE FRAMES AND SOME IMPORTANT BOLTS ARE HIGHLY RUSTED. THEY ONLY TOUCH-UP SPOTS THEY CAN ACCESS AT THE DEALERSHIP. THE FACILITY WHERE THEY WERE PRODUCED USED A POOR QUALITY WAXY PAINT COATING. THE DEALERSHIP CANNOT GUARANTEE A COMPLETE SOLUTION FOR THIS FRAME RUST. THIS IS A VERY DANGEROUS PROBLEM IN THE FUTURE OF THE LIFE OF THE TRUCK. THE FRAME COULD DECAY AND THE BOLTS CAN BREAK OFF. THIS IS NOT FAIR FOR A $40,000 TO $60,000 TRUCK. YOU CAN SPOT THE RUST RIGHT FROM THE DEALERSHIP NEW TRUCK LOT. I READ ON THE GM TRUCK FORUM ON THE INTERNET HUNDREDS IF NOT THOUSANDS OF THESE TRUCKS HAVE THIS ISSUE. I WILL FEEL VERY UNSAFE DRIVING THIS TRUCK A FEW YEARS FROM NOW. THERE ARE SOME PHOTOS OF A FEW RUSTED AREAS IN THE GM SERVICE BULLETIN WHICH YOU OBTAIN.

ON 4/10/2014 I FACTORY ORDERED AN 2014 GMC 1500 CREW CAB 4X4 SHORT BED WITH A MAX TRAILER TOWING PACKAGE. THIS TOWING PACKAGE HAD A MAXIMUM TRAILERING WEIGHT OF 11,800# AND A GCWR OF 17,500#. I TOOK RECEIPT OF THE VEHICLE ON 5/29/14. ON 6/4/14 GM RELEASED DOCUMENT ID: 3931537 STATING THAT THE GCVWR IN THE OWNERS MANUAL IS INCORRECT. THE MAX TRAILER WEIGHT IS NOW BEING STATED AS 11,200# AND A GCWR OF 16,700# AFTER THE RELEASE OF THIS DOCUMENT. THIS 800# GCVWR REDUCTION IS AN ISSUE AS THE VEHICLE WAS ORIGINALLY PURCHASED AND SIZED WITH THE ORIGINAL TOWING CAPACITIES AND GCWR. AT THIS TIME, GM DOES NOT MANUFACTURER ANY 1/2 TON TRUCKS THAT WILL ACCOMMODATE THE ORIGINAL TOWING CAPACITIES THAT I FACTORY ORDERED AND PURCHASED MY VEHICLE AT. I HAVE BEEN WORKING WITH THE DEALERSHIP ON THIS ISSUE SINCE AUGUST 22,2014 AND THERE HAS BEEN NO RESOLUTION TO THIS POINT; THEREFORE, I AM FILING THIS COMPLAINT.
