I continue to have an intermittent issue with my car throwing itself into park. It happened once in 2024, 2025 but now three times in the last two weeks. This is becoming incredibly unsafe as while driving the car puts itself into park while in motion. The insurance company will not repair due to it being intermittent. I do not know what to do but I need this documented for safety reasons

NHTSA complaint #11755346 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.

2022 Land Rover Discovery Sport Fort Washington, MD

I am reporting what I believe is a safety‑related defect involving the automatic transmission in my 2022 Land Rover Discovery Sport, VIN [XXX]. Approximately five months after the factory warranty expired, at around 44,000 miles, the transmission began slipping unexpectedly, and the vehicle would not accelerate above roughly 25–35 mph. This occurred while driving, creating an unsafe condition. I needed to make a left turn across traffic, but because the vehicle would not accelerate properly and could not safely match the speed of other vehicles, I judged it too dangerous to change lanes and complete the left turn. Instead, I had to make a right turn, pull into a driveway, turn around, and continue straight to avoid an unsafe lane change. A vehicle that cannot respond normally to throttle input presents a risk when merging, changing lanes, or crossing intersections. The symptoms are transmission slipping under acceleration, limited maximum speed, and abnormal drivability. To my knowledge, this is not due to driver error or poor maintenance. The problem has been reproduced and observed by an authorized Land Rover dealer (Land Rover of Alexandria, Alexandria, VA), which provided an estimated repair cost of about $7,000, indicating a major transmission or control‑system fault. The vehicle and transmission are available for inspection upon request. I understand there have been prior recalls and technical bulletins involving Land Rover transmission control issues (including a recall where certain Discovery Sport and Range Rover Evoque vehicles could unexpectedly shift into neutral due to sensor and software calibration problems). My vehicle’s behavior—loss of proper drive, slipping, and limited speed—raises similar safety concerns even if the failure mode is not identical. I am concerned that there may be ongoing transmission control or calibration issues that could affect safety. I took my vehicle to a land rover dealership based upon 2 service bulletins issued by the manufacturer N768, sfcc_apr2022_17 and NHTSA item number 10211119. The Land Rover dealership refused to service the vehicle for those bulletins. I have a heart condition with 20% ejection factor. Since the telematics do not work in the event of a medical emergency my vehicle cannot be located for first responders. The dealer and manufacturer are not flashing or upgrading the telematics to modern standards which can be done easily by installing new software and/or changing out the telematics unit for 4G/5G compatible units and/or reprogrmming older units. As a result drivers with medical conditions are being put at risk if a medical emergency arises because the car cannot communicate to first responders as to its location to help an incapacitated driver.

The roof molding strip has blown off on the freeway putting commuters at risk. This has happened on this vehicle type (discovery sport) for us, 3 times (2 on one vehicle and 1 on this VIN). With this part flying off on the freeway, other drivers swerve to miss it. I cannot stop on the freeway to retrieve it due to traffic and other driving at 60mph or more. We have met with the dealer on the other car and they fixed it. It was a known issue. There has been a service/safety bulletin issued, however, they want to charge us a large amount of money. This is manufacturing defect. Land rover is not taking responsibility. This is happening all over based on research. Here is the bulletin ID LTB00865NAS2 - Roof Molding. Please help with remedying this as it is a public safety issue.

My parents are [XXX] . They were coming home from there doctors appointment on [XXX] and traveling about 50 MPH heading home and all the sudden my father tried to press on the brakes to slow down and there was no brakes at all. He could not stop the vehicle and the ONLY thing that saved his and my moms life was the fact that the 2018 Land Rover discovery sport SE came to a hill and immediately as soon as the vehicle came up the hill my father turned the wheel to the right and the vehicle stopped after hitting one of those parking lot cement blocks right in front of a mechanic shop. When my parents got out of the vehicle they were so shook and scared for their life. A mechanic came out to ask if they were ok and they explained to the mechanic what had happened. The mechanic then, pushed the vehicle inside the garage and put it up on a lift and diagnosed it and then told my parents that the brake lines had blown and that it was unusual and that this was a manufacture problem and Land Rover needed to be contacted or for us to go online under this website and file a complaint. We may have to retain an attorney because my parents only bought this vehicle less then a year ago and already almost lost both of their lives due to the brakes going out and brake lines bursting. I have replaced the tires, the rotors brakes and gad the vehicle aligned multiple times. The steering wheel is still off and not straight and the vehicle still keeps pulling to the right. Last mechanic that did alignment says the vehicle has no camber or castor that can be adjusted. But vehicle is aligned. Makes no sense to me, I believe this is a manufacturing defect.

I was driving and the vehicle car stalled it said gear box defect and switched from reverse to drive to neutral but would not move. I think this is dangerous since my car was already in drive and suddenly stalling could've caused an accident. Luckily there was no car behind me or it would have rear ended me.

While waiting at a light in 2022 our 2019 Land Rover Discovery Sport did not allow gear shift movement warning showed Gearbox alert we had to turn the car off & sit in the middle of traffic. It finally allowed gearshift to work & we then took it to Land Rover in Frisco,TX. Dealership permanently turned off the automatic auto stop/start function & stated they fixed the issue. Now in 2023 we have the same alert with ATPC with no stabilization & gearbox problems.

2016 Land Rover Discovery Sport Sacramento, CA Crash

The shift gear is broken. It is stuck in drive, I cannot park, reverse, or put the vehicle in neutral. Because the gear shift is stuck in drive I had to crash the vehicle into a curb, as not to hurt myself or others. Once resting against the curb I had to quickly get out and disconnect the battery, otherwise my car would have continued driving. The gear shift remains broken and in drive. Research shows that this is a common and persistent issue with Land Rovers; one that isn’t disclosed during purchase. This was a considerable safety hazard for me and my family.

1) Low Coolant warning started flashing. I had the coolant checked on two days by different people and it was full both times. Both times I was told its a sensor issue, the dealership service center should look into it and all components and replace as necessary. 2) Occasionally when putting the car in park it automatically shuts off and locks in gear. 3) Occasionally when yielding the car is sluggish or there is no power at all when taking off again. All three issues put my safety, those with me and on the road with me at risk. The earliest appointment with the dealer is 24 days out. I bought it as a Certified Used Vehicle 8 weeks ago.

The door will not lock while in motion or at all. The intermittent problem has occurred twice while owning this vehicle. The driver can fall out during driving. The problem was reported to the dealership on three occasions and they could not find a solution they oiled the locking system and it sat overnight and in the morning they were able to shut it. No warnings at all. Similar recall on the Range Rover: Land Rover is recalling about 65,385 of its 2013-2016 Range Rover and 2014-2016 Range Rover Sport SUVs because doors that appear to be closed may not actually be latched, raising the risk that occupants could fall out, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
