While driving my 2015 Ram 1500, I was exiting the freeway and attempting to merge into traffic when the electric power steering system appeared to fail or malfunction. The steering suddenly became very stiff, and I struggled to turn the steering wheel while trying to safely merge. Shortly after the steering became difficult to control, the power steering warning light came on. This created a safety concern because I was actively merging into traffic and had reduced ability to steer the vehicle. The sudden loss of power steering assist increased the risk of a crash with surrounding vehicles, especially because the failure occurred during a traffic maneuver. The vehicle and power steering system are available for inspection upon request. At this time, it is UNKNOWN whether the problem has been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center. It is also UNKNOWN whether the vehicle or component has been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others. Prior to the incident, the power steering appeared to operate normally. The warning lamp came on after the steering became stiff. The problem appears to be intermittent, as the steering may work after the vehicle sits overnight, but the warning light and steering issue return after driving for a period of time. Based on my assessment, the issue may involve the electric power steering system, EPS control module, wiring, fuse/fusible link, or related steering assist component, but the exact cause is currently UNKNOWN.

The vehicle is experiencing an intermittent and unpredictable loss of power steering assist. The steering becomes extremely stiff and difficult to turn, often immediately upon startup or while at a standstill, then randomly becomes loose again before returning to a stiff state. This creates a significant safety hazard as the effort required to steer changes without warning during operation. Upon inspection, the electrical connectors to the EPS rack were found to be clean and free of corrosion, suggesting an internal failure of the Electronic Power Steering motor or control module. The truck was working fine, went to start it and the trucks electric power steering was no longer working. We brought to shop and got an est of $3,000-$4,000 to fix the repair. We didnt have the money at the time and brought the truck home. It proceeded to work randomly after a turn but next start up failed to work and has been like this for a year. There is a recall for Ram 1500 manufactured between January 2015-September 2015 regarding failed power steering. My truck was manufactured February 2015 and was not on the list of specific Ram 1500s to have this recall done. I was with my kids getting an oil change on the truck. When I was leaving the maintenance bay my power steering suddenly failed and left us stranded to get towed. Chrysler stated that there was certain conditions that led for certain models to have recalls for this part, but not my truck. They could not give me a clear reason why mine was not included on the list.

Traveling at 60MPH on a highway in the middle lane when my truck lost complete power steering. It felt as if I had zero control over my truck at a high speed. I managed to slow down and made it onto the shoulder without crashing. Had my truck towed to Dodge Chrysler ram dealership. Before dropping it off I saw there were at least 10 recalls for my truck that I mentioned to technician. They plugged my truck into their scanner and the technician got in my truck and drove it right into the shop bay. I’m unsure how he was able to maneuver the truck after plugging it in. After diagnosing the problems with my truck they called to tell me that none of the recalls affected my vehicle and they weren’t repairing anything. My gas tank also detached from my vehicle while driving and I knew that was covered. Over a week arguing and proving they are responsible to repair it. They repaired the gas tank and refused to look into the rest of recalls. I could’ve died and hurt many others driving by the loss of power steering traveling at that speed. Truck was fine then randomly loses full control. There are open recalls for my exact truck with this exact issue. The dealership refused to acknowledge any of it.

Sudden & unexpected power assist failure of the electronic power steering system (EPS). It had an intermittent failure for approximately 3 seconds before total failure then the steering warning illuminated in the instrument cluster. I feel that this absolutely is a safety issue, as the steering is extremely difficult to operate without the rack being powered, much more so than old style power assist, say if the belt came off of an older generation power steering system. There are no OBD2 codes associated with this failure.

So those problem has been reported and delt with but continued ongoing investigations for my vehicle. I have a 2015 ram 1500 that at 100,000miles and now experiencing issues with my steering. Have ran vin and no outstanding recalls. My problem is almost like the eps stops working for brief seconds while turning at slower speeds. The problem comes and goes, no noises, lights or codes just physical hard to personally steer my truck at times.
