NHTSA Safety Complaint – Acura RDX Driver-Side Airbag Module Availability Vehicle: 2013 Acura RDX VIN: [XXX] Component: Driver-Side Airbag Module Part Number: 77810-TX4-A40ZA-MOD My 2013 Acura RDX was vandalized in January 2026, and the driver-side airbag module was stolen. My mechanic contacted Rallye Acura to obtain the required replacement OEM part. The required component is the Driver Side Air Bag Module, Part No. 77810-TX4-A40ZA-MOD. The replacement part was ordered, but it has remained on critical back order for more than six months. Acura opened Case No. XXX; however, despite repeated communications, Acura has been unable to provide any estimated availability date or a timeline for resolution. Because this is a safety-critical component, the vehicle cannot legally be driven without the required airbag module. As a result, my vehicle has remained unusable for more than six months while I continue to incur insurance and ownership costs. I have repeatedly contacted Acura regarding this matter, including escalating the issue directly to the President and CEO of American Honda Motor Co. Despite this escalation, I continue to receive the same response that there is no estimated availability date for the part. I have also found similar complaints from other Acura RDX owners involving the same driver-side airbag module and the same part number, reporting prolonged delays and critical back-order status. I am concerned that owners of affected Acura RDX vehicles are unable to obtain a critical safety component within a reasonable timeframe. I request that NHTSA review whether this represents a broader safety-related issue involving the availability of replacement driver-side airbag modules for these vehicles. The contact owns a 2024 Acura RDX. The contact stated that while driving approximately 35 MPH, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard. The vehicle failed to stop and crashed into the rear driver’s side of another vehicle. During the crash, the braking system malfunctioned, and the air bag failed to deploy as needed. The contact sustained an injury to the back but had not yet sought medical assistance. The driver of the second was transported to the hospital with a shoulder injury. A police report was filed. The cause of the failure was not yet determined. The manufacturer and local dealer were notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 28,000.

I have a code on my Acura regarding the driver side airbag. The code is 11-10, covered under service bulletin: 18-020, noting defects in the driver side air bag module. I brought my vehicle in to Hall Acura in November 2025 where this was officially diagnosed and a order was placed for a part on back order (Part Number: 77810-tx4-a40za). To this date, the part continues to be on "critical back order". I have escalated this to Honda Corporation and opened up a case with their office (Case Number: XXX). I receive weekly emails stating that they are working on this but the part is still on critical back order. I have pushed to escalate this further and they state this is all that can be done. Dear National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, I am submitting a formal safety complaint regarding an unresolved airbag system failure in my Acura vehicle, and the lack of a timely or safe remedy despite the issue being acknowledged and covered under a manufacturer warranty extension. The airbag system in my vehicle was first diagnosed as failed in September 2025 by my local mechanic and shortly thereafter confirmed by an authorized Acura dealership. The defective component (part number 77810TX4-A40ZA) is currently on backorder and has been unavailable for several months. I have been placed on a priority waitlist, but no estimated timeline for repair has been provided. This issue is particularly concerning because it directly affects the vehicle’s safety systems. I have effectively been driving a vehicle without functioning airbags since the initial diagnosis. Despite the clear safety risk, Acura has not provided an adequate interim solution. Given the seriousness of the issue, I recently requested a loaner vehicle from Acura so that I would not have to continue operating an unsafe vehicle. This request was denied, and I was informed that I am not eligible for a loaner, despite the known safety defect and lack of available repair parts. Since we bought the vehicle in 2019, the passenger-side seat sensor didn't always go off when occupied. We asked the dealership to check it out in 2020 or 2021, however, due to the problem being inconsistent it couldn't be fixed. The inconsistency of the seat sensor has continued though the years, but lately, it has become more frequent. I am the usual occupant on the passenger side and I weigh 113 lbs. I recently spoke with the dealer service department after I saw the recall; however, the recall does not apply to our VIN.

The driver side airbag. And yes, it can be inspected. I was involved in a low impact accident, where I struck a minor curb. The airbag deployed in my face, causing a loss of consciousness and ongoing concussion. No warning signs at all. Not yet, the vehicle is being looked at on Monday. The vehicle was inspected by the police.

Purchased used 2019 RDX from Acura dealer in June 2025. Within the first 30 days of owning the RDX we noticed the Airbag Sensor for the front passenger seat would not recognize my 90 lb daughter seating in the seat and the air bag sensor would indicate the seat was empty, which would result in the airbag not deploying if we were in an accident. I took video of this happening and took my RDX into dealership for repair as we were still within the 30 day period for issues. The Acura dealership insisted they could not replicate the problem so it was fine. I again referred to the video and said we have seen proof of the issue. After much back and forth and the service manager telling me his large dog sometimes doesn't set off the sensor he agreed to call American Honda to send out an engineer to test. The engineer after running tests said seat is calibrated correctly no issue to fix, even if we wanted to pay to fix it ourselves they wouldn't fix the seat sensor because there is no issue to correct. I don't understand how a car that advertises a safety feature for anyone that weighs over 65lbs can expect me to continue to drive this vehicle when it has a proven faulty sensor. Obviously how they test the sensor is faulty as well. This is a huge safety issue for the 2019 RDX and a disappointing and shocking lack of response from Acura. We are now working to return the car to the dealership and I am sure we will have to fight to not pay extra costs that will occur with them buying it back.

The contact stated that after the impact, the front driver's side knee bolster air bag gradually deployed and exploded, causing a 5-inch opened wound on the contact's right leg. The contact stated that her leg was bleeding significantly. The vehicle was called emergency services. The ambulance lifted the contact out of the vehicle and transported the contact to the hospital, where the contact was informed that she had sustained a traumatic wound to the leg. Antibiotics were applied to the wound. The Doctor attempted to suture the wound but was unable to. The contact was referred to a hospital Wound Center, and the contact has been undergoing weekly treatment. A police report was filed. The police towed the vehicle to a tow lot, where it was later picked up by the insurance company. The vehicle was then towed to the dealer, where an estimate of the damage was being made. The dealer informed the contact that only the knee bolster air bag would be replaced. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. My wife weighs about 125 pounds. When she sits in the front passenger seat of this car, often (but not always) an indicator will light up on the dashboard, saying "Passenger Air Bag OFF." Even if she shifts around in the seat or bounces up and down, the indicator light will stay on. I have taken the car to my local Acura dealer twice, asking that this problem be diagnosed and fixed. The first time their service technician reported "No issues at this time. Unable to duplicate concern at this time." The second time (today), the technician reported that he had "checked system for codes, no codes in system. Light will go on and off if passenger moves around in seat." I remain quite concerned that this un-repaired problem is a significant safety issue, as the indicator light appears to be saying that the airbag won't deploy in a collision.
