NHTSA investigations into the 2014 Audi S7

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Recalls on the 2014 Audi S7

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2022133 2,548 units in Canada

Engine

Issue: On certain vehicles, the oil strainer for the turbocharger oil supply could get blocked. If this happens, a turbocharger could fail. This could cause loss of engine power and/or cause the engine to stall. Note: This problem could cause different warning messages to display or the engine oil warning light to turn on. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Audi will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the oil strainer for the turbocharger oil supply. The dealer will also inspect and document the performance of the boost pressure system and change the engine oil.

Recall 2018075 1,023 units in Canada

Label

Certain vehicles may not comply with Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Regulations. The tire certification label may bear incorrect Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) information. The label incorrectly states "520 kg" (1146 lbs) instead of the correct "450 kg" (992 lbs). If an owner were to rely on the incorrect values, it could lead to premature tire failure and vehicle overloading, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will apply a revised certification label with the correct values.

Recall 2013320 372 units in Canada

Fuel System

On certain vehicles, due to a manufacturing defect, a fuel line can become damaged over time and could leak fuel. Leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, could lead to a fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel line if necessary.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The ECU control module Is a known problem with this car by a great amount of owners. It is such a problem that the car part is on back order for weeks at a time. The biggest issue about this is that the car just randomly doesn’t turn on and randomly shuts down on the roads, freeways and even U turns. It can potentially lead to critical injuries

DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY DURING A ROAD TRIP FROM FLORIDA TO WISCONSIN, OUR ENGINE STALLED WHILE COMING TO A STOP. WE MANAGED TO GET IT TO AN AUDI DEALER AND IT WAS DETERMINED BOTH TURBOCHARGERS WERE BROKEN. BOTH SHAFTS HAD SNAPPED AND THE CAR WAS UN-DRIVABLE LEAVING US STRANDED IN GEORGIA. THIS IS A DESIGN ISSUE FOR THE 4.0T ENGINES AND VW/AUDI HAS REFUSED TO IMPLEMENT A FIX BESIDE THE OIL SCREEN BAND-AID. THE OIL SCREEN, SINCE IT IS NOT SERVICEABLE, WILL SLOWLY ACCUMULATE DEBRIS AND RESTRICT OIL FLOW TO THE TURBOS AND CAUSE THEM TO BE STARVED OF OIL. SIMPLY REMOVING THIS OIL SCREEN WOULD BE A SUITABLE FIX BUT AUDI HAS REFUSED TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEIR DESIGN IS FAULTY. THIS FAILURE COULD BE EXTREMELY DANGEROUS IF THEY WERE TO CAUSE THE VEHICLE TO STALL AT SPEED OR WORSE, HAVE THE ENGINE IGNITE DO TO THE MENTAL ON METAL GRINDING OF THE TURBO TURBINE. PLEASE HELP US.

IN MOTION NORMAL DRIVING 45-55 MPH UNDER ACCELERATION ON LONG ON RAMP TO INTERSTATE. REACHED A RAMP METER. ACCELERATING FORM RAMP METER, I NOTICED INCREASING POWER LOSS AND COULD NOT REACH HIGHWAY SPEEDS. ALL WARNING LIGHTS APPEARED (TPMS, TRACTION CONTROL, TRANSMISSION ISSUES, ETC.) I INSTANTLY MERGED RIGHT WITH FLASHERS HAVING TO AVOID ANOTHER ON RAMP OF TRAFFIC. AT VERY ROUGH IDLE I COULD NOT ACCELERATE BEYOND 1100 RPM I TRIED MOVING AGAIN AS THE TRANSMISSION SEEMED TO WORK BUT VERY ROUGH IDLE AND AGAIN, WOULD NOT GO BEYOND 1100RPM. IT WAS TOWED TO SHOP. THEY NOTATED "CATASTROPHIC TURBO FAILURE ON BOTH BANKS". THEY SAID IT WAS DUE TO A COMMON PROBLEM THEY HAVE NOTICED OF AN OIL CHECK VALVE FILTER SCREEN. I RECENTLY HAD AN EXTENDED WARRANTY SERVICE DONE BY DEALER. KNOWING THE VALVE HAS HAD ISSUES, I TEXTED THE TECH ABOUT THIS VALVE AND HIS RESPONSE WAS IT WAS NOT CONVENIENT TO ACCESS. I HAVE TEXTS FROM TECH AS THIS IS THE BEST WAY FOR THEM TO COMMUNICATE. IT IS DISAPPOINTING MY CAR WAS EFFECTED BY THIS EASILY FOUND ISSUE OF OIL CHECK VALVE FILTER AND EVEN MORE UPSET THAT I BROUGHT IT TO THE ATTENTION OF AN AUDI SERVICE TECH WHO DID NOT EVEN OFFER A SOLUTION OR PRICE TO DO THIS REPAIR WHILE SERVICING A WARRANTY OIL SEPARATOR THAT SITS DIRECTLY ABOVE THE FAULTY PART THAT STARVED THE TURBOS OF OIL AND CAUSED, AS DESCRIBED BY THE LOCAL SHOP," CATASTROPHIC TURBO FAILURE". THANKS FOR HEARING ME OUT.

TURBO WHEEL SHEARED OFF THE SHAFT AND STALLED THE CAR WHILE DRIVING AT < 5MPH IN PARKING LOT. UNABLE TO THEN START CAR AND MOVE IT - NEEDED TO BE PUSHED TO ONE SIDE TO AWAIT THE TOW TRUCK. THERE WERE NO SYMPTOMS OR WARNINGS OR CEL PRIOR TO THE FAILURE. OTHERS HAVE REPORTED SAME FAILURE AT HIGHER SPEEDS OR EVEN ON HIGHWAYS. THIS FAILURE MODE IS DANGEROUS AND COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL. AUDI SHOULD BE PERFORMING A RECALL ON THIS FOR ALL THE VEHICLES THEY INSTALL THIS ENGINE MODEL INTO. I WAS ONLY RECENTLY MADE AWARE OF THE ABILITY TO REPORT THIS ISSUE HERE, HENCE THE DELAY IN MY DOING SO.

MY FAMILY AND I WERE DRIVING BACK HOME FROM A 5 HR TRIP WHEN MY CAR STALLED COMPLETELY ON A 4 LANE FREEWAY. WE STOPPED AT-LEAST 4 TIMES DURING THE TRIP AND THE CAR STARTED WITH NO WARNING/SYMPTOMS OR CHECK ENGINE LIGHT AT ALL. NO HESITATION ON THE POWER WHILE DRIVING. ABOUT 1 HOUR LEFT UNTIL WE GET HOME, WE HIT TRAFFIC AND LUCKILY WE DECIDED TO CHANGE 1 LANE TO THE RIGHT FROM THE FARTHEST LEFT(FAST LANE) BEFORE HITTING A FULL STOP. THAT MOMENT, CAR STALLED AND IT WON'T LET ME RESTART THE CAR. I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT IS GOING ON AS I CANNOT EVEN TURN THE CAR OFF/ON AND THE ELECTRONICS WON'T WORK ON ME AS WELL. I AM NOW COMPLETELY BLOCKING THE 2ND LANE FROM THE LEFT OF A 4 LANE FREEWAY WITH A 70 MPH SPEED LIMIT. LUCKILY I AM NOT ALONE IN THE CAR AND MY DAD IS CLOSELY FOLLOWING BEHIND US TO HELP ME PUSH THE CAR 2 MORE LANES TO THE RIGHT TO GET TO THE SHOULDERS. WAS ALSO FORTUNATE THAT THERE WAS A CALIFORNIA HIGHWAY PATROL RESPONDING TO A 911 CALL WHOM HELPED US BY BLOCKING THE LANES BUT HAD TO LEAVE RIGHT AFTER AFTER ASKING US IF WE ARE GOING TO BE ALRIGHT WITHOUT HIM. I COULD NOT IMAGINE WHAT WOULD HAVE HAPPENED IF I WAS BY MYSELF WITHOUT NOBODY I KNOW AROUND ME. I WONDER IF PEOPLE WOULD HAVE STOPPED AND HELP ME OUT OR I COULD HAVE BEEN SERIOUSLY HURT AS MY CAR WAS TOTALLY STOPPED IN THE MIDDLE OF A 4 LANE FREEWAY AND CANNOT EVEN RESTART IT TO LIMP IT TO THE SIDE SHOULDERS. I CALLED MY MERCURY INSURANCE ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE BUT 30 MINS LATER, THE PROMISED TOW TRUCK COMPANY STILL HASN'T CALLED. I DECIDED TO GIVE IT ANOTHER TRY, CAR CRANKS BUT WON'T TURN. SUCCESSFULLY RESTARTED IT BY SLIGHTLY PRESSING ON THE GAS BUT WILL STALL AGAIN AFTER THE RPM FALLS BELOW 800 RPM. STILL NO TOW TRUCK, I TOLD MY FAMILY THAT I WILL GIVE IT A GO AS I WILL TRY TO KEEP THE RPM MORE THAN 800 RPM BUT FOLLOW ME CLOSELY IF THE CAR COMPLETELY DIES ON ME AGAIN. CAR IS NOW AT AN AUDI DEALERSHIP.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

WE LEASED AN AUDI S7 WHICH WE WERE NOT MADE AWARE OF HAVING A FUEL LINE ISSUE AT ANY TIME DURING THE TRANSACTION. THE DEALERSHIP MENTIONED THEY WERE DETAILING THE CAR AND GETTING IT READY FOR US. WHEN WE WENT INTO THE GARAGE TO SEE THE CAR, IT WAS NOT BEING DETAILED, BUT THE BACK SEATS WERE REMOVED AND GAS WAS BEING SIPHONED FROM THE VEHICLE. WE WERE SHOCKED AND ASKED THE SERVICE TECHNICIANS WHAT THE HECK THEY WERE DOING. WE WERE TOLD THAT THEY WERE PERFORMING SERVICE TO MAKE SURE THE VEHICLE RUNS WELL. THIS WAS VERY DECEPTIVE BUT SINCE WE HAD ALREADY SIGNED THE CONTRACT, WE GAVE THEM THE BENEFIT OF THE DOUBT. THE CAR HAS SMELLED LIKE GASOLINE INSIDE THE CABIN SINCE WE LEASED IT. IT HAS MADE MYSELF, WIFE, AND OTHER FAMILY AND FRIENDS NAUSEOUS ON NUMEROUS OCCASIONS. I REPORTED THIS TO THE KEYES AUDI DEALERSHIP SEVERAL TIMES AND ALL THEY COULD TELL ME WAS TO WAIT FOR THE SMELL TO GO AWAY. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE, BUT SINCE I HAD BEEN TRAVELING AND NOT USING THE CAR MUCH IT WASN'T A MAJOR PRIORITY UNTIL RECENTLY. A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO, I NOTIFIED AUDI CORPORATE REGARDING MY SERIOUS CONCERN AND THEY TOLD ME TO TAKE THE CAR INTO THE DEALERSHIP FOR SERVICE. WE DID THIS, AND THE SERVICE CONSULTANT TOLD MY WIFE AND I THEY HAD REPLACED THE FUEL LINE PRIOR TO OUR LEASING OF THE VEHICLE BUT THAT THEY "MAY HAVE" REPLACED A FUEL PUMP THE DAY WE PICKED THE VEHICLE UP AND THAT GASOLINE MIGHT BE ON THE SEATS SINCE THAT'S WHERE THE PUMP IS LOCATED. I PROCEEDED TO ASK HIM HOW IT'S POSSIBLE THAT A FUEL PUMP ON A BRAND NEW CAR GOES BAD ALL OF A SUDDEN AND SPILLS GAS ON MY SEATS AND HE TOLD ME IT HAPPENS ALL OF THE TIME. LUDICROUS. MY WIFE AND I ARE EXTREMELY UNCOMFORTABLE AND FEEL VERY UNSAFE IN A HIGH END VEHICLE THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE ANY ISSUES WITH FUEL LINES/PUMPS OR ANYTHING RELATED. MY WIFE AND I ARE APPALLED AND ARE WILLING TO TAKE LEGAL ACTION. WHATEVER IT TAKES TO FEEL SAFE AGAIN.
