• What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? I have a 2018 BMW X1 that has about 60,000 miles on it. So far, I have had to have the windshield replaced four times due to pebbles hitting and cracking the windshield when on the highway. This never used to be the case in older BMWs that I have had in the past. Pebbles would never crack windshields. I know many other friends and family members that have had the same issue. Although insurance pays for the windshield/sensor replacements that cost around $1,500 to $2,700 (depending on which dealership I go to and which state I have lived in), this results in higher premiums for us all, because insurance companies are not going to just take a loss on the windshield claims. So really, we are all paying for each other's windshields with our insurance premium increases. Please enforce a recall to replace all the weak windshields with the strong windshields they used to produce. They are not only wasting our money but profiting off the insurance payments for all these broken windshields. My car is available for inspection upon request. • How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? Cracked windshields compromise the vehicle's structural integrity, distorts your vision, and can shatter if subjected to sudden temperature changes, road vibrations, or a collision. • Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Yes, every time I go into a BMW dealership to have the windshield replaced and by my insurance company, which pays for the replacements. • Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? Yes, by BMW dealerships when they have replaced the windshield each time. • Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? The contact owns a 2015 BMW X1. The contact stated that while the vehicle was at an independent mechanic for maintenance, the contact was informed that the water pump had failed. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact stated that prior to the visit, the vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, the cause of the failure was not found. The failure persisted. On a separate occasion, while the vehicle was parked, the front passenger's side door failed to open as intended from the outside, and the front passenger's side door only opened from the inside of the vehicle. No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired due to the cost. The contact stated that on a separate occasion, the front passenger’s side rear window failed to function as intended. There was an abnormal sound while rolling up the window, and the window failed to roll up. The vehicle was not taken to the dealer or an independent mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired, and the failure persisted. The contact stated that prior to the other failures, the sliding cover on the sunroof failed to function as intended. The sliding cover was stuck, and the contact was unable to move the sliding cover. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V608000 (ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM). However, the VIN was not included. The vehicle was not repaired for the failure. Most recently, when the vehicle was restarted, the message "Passenger Restraint System Malfunction" was displayed. The contact used a personal scanner to clear the message. The vehicle was not repaired after the most recent failure. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 110,000.

About 24 months back the sunroof curtain of my BMW X1 started having problems when I retract or operate it. It used to make stretching noises when I tried to open my sunroof and after a few times I heard a crackling noise and before I can stop it the curtain tore. Initially it was a small tear, so it did not bother much but over time the curtain completely left the guide/rail on one side and started sagging. Given it is a sunroof the curtain is as long as the vehicle and so now it is sagging to a point that it obstructs driver's visibly in back mirror. BMW won't do anything about it saying it is out of warranty and ultimately to avoid accidents I had to remove the curtain completely. I also tried getting it fixed, but the issue is not just the curtain but the rails of the curtain which is a non-replaceable part :( I would have to replace full sunshade assembly which is upwards of $1600. The sunroof screen that covers the panoramic sunroof has become detached from the retractable component. Because of this, the screen has begun to sag, which is now partially obstructing visibility through the rearview mirror. This obstruction is a life threatening situation because of lowered visibility. (According to online forums dedicated to this manufacturer's vehicles, this is a common issue for this make and model. Unfortunately, the manufacturer considers the sunroof shade a "cosmetic" component, and it is not covered by warranties or service plans.)

The moonroof spontaneously exploded while traveling on interstate highway at 65 mph. I was in the open and no vehicles were near me. I was showered in glass but uninjured because I was wearing a brimmed hat. I could have but did not lose control of the vehicle. There was no warning or other indicator of the problem. The dealership inspected and replaced at no cost to us. No police or insurance involvement.

Sunshae blind is falling off on one side causing bad view of a light while driving I'm a tall man. Electric issue possible causing the track to function wrong causing sun shade to tear off. The retractable sunshade has fallen from the track obstructing the rear view visibility. The glue that was used is faulty according to several repairmen and no one will work on the part. After reviewing several online forums, this looks to be a common problem for the 2016 BMW X1. This should be a recall and covered by BMW because it cannot be remedied and obstructs the drivers view and ability to safely drive.

The sunshade on the panoramic sunroof detached entirely along the passenger side of the car. It hangs down and impairs the driver's vision on the passenger side, preventing the driver from seeing oncoming traffic. Additionally the sunshade cannot be retracted for fear that it will hang down further impairing the driver's view in the rear view mirror. I am not driving my car unless absolutely necessary until this can be repaired. I contacted BMW and took the car to the local BMW dealership for inspection and a repair estimate. This site has 16 complaints for the same defect with the same year and model of BMW.
