NHTSA investigations into the 2020 Cadillac XT6

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Rear-View Camera Failure

On July 22, 2022, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE22-006) to assess alleged failures of the rear-view camera (RVC) in Model Year (MY) 2020-2021 Cadillac XT5, XT6, and GMC Acadia vehicles. The complaints report that the screen for the RVC is black, sometimes with a red triangle and a circle with a line through it. To date, ODI has received a total of 18 complaints and several EWR Field Reports with allegations of the RVC image failing to display when the vehicle is in reverse. The reports have been received over the past 28 months with most occurring...

Recalls on the 2020 Cadillac XT6

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

22V709000

BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Cadillac XT5, XT6, and GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with the optional Surround Vision feature. The rearview camera coaxial cable connectors may have been crimped improperly, causing the rearview camera to fail or function intermittently.

Risk: An inoperative rearview camera can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

20V668000

POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Chevrolet Cruze and Buick LaCrosse, 2018-2020 Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain, 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, 2019-2020 Buick Encore, Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Acadia, and 2020 Cadillac XT6 vehicles. The start/stop accumulator endcap may have missing bolts.

Risk: Missing bolts on the start-stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission oil leak and may progress to a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.

20V639000

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:DELIVERY:FUEL PUMP

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles. The fuel pump's jet nozzle may have a plastic burr remaining from the manufacturing process, possibly causing a blocked nozzle and an insufficient fuel supply to the engine.

Risk: Insufficient fuel supply can result in an engine stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.

20V446000

AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW:CURTAIN:INFLATOR

General Motors, LLC. (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT5 and XT6, Chevrolet Blazer, Silverado 1500, 2500 and 3500 and Traverse and GMC Acadia and Sierra 1500, 2500 and 3500 vehicles. The diffuser component of the Roof-Rail Air Bag (RRAB) inflator may not have been properly crimped to the inflator and could separate from the inflator during air bag deployment.

Risk: If the diffuser separates from the inflator during deployment, RRAB performance may be degraded, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2022536 6,684 units in Canada

Visual System

Issue: On certain vehicles, the connectors on the cables for the rearview camera may not be attached properly. As a result, the rearview camera image may not display when the transmission is shifted into reverse gear. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with the optional Surround Vision feature. Safety Risk: A rearview camera image that does not display could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the coaxial cables for the rearview camera.

Recall 2021146 10,859 units in Canada

Fabrics

Issue: Under certain testing conditions, the front seat material may not meet the flammability requirements of Canadian regulations. However, when the seat mat is tested in a fully assembled state, with all four layers, it meets all requirements. Safety Risk: This is a testing issue that does not affect vehicle safety. Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. The company has made changes to ensure that all new vehicles have fully compliant seat-vent mats.

Recall 2020520 22,911 units in Canada

Powertrain

Issue: On certain vehicles, the start-stop accumulator in the transmission may be missing bolts. As a result, transmission fluid could leak and eventually cause the transmission to stop working. If this happens, there could be a loss of power to the wheels. Safety Risk: A transmission fluid leak onto a hot surface can create the risk of a fire. Additionally, a loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the transmission start-stop accumulator. It will be replaced if any bolts are found missing.

Recall 2020484 25 units in Canada

Fuel System

Issue: On certain vehicles, there could be a problem with the fuel pump assembly. As a result, the flow of fuel to the engine could be partially blocked. Under certain conditions, like a low fuel level, this could cause the engine to stall. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the fuel pump module.

Recall 2020350 76 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain vehicles, there may be a problem with the side curtain airbag inflators. As a result, the airbags may not inflate properly in a crash. Safety Risk: An airbag that does inflate properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the side curtain airbags.

Vehicle stalled while driving on a busy road creating a very dangerous situation. Could not put it in neutral to push it out of the road; it was partially in the road for over an hour. Had to have it towed to replace the fuel pump and fuel pump control unit. Found two recalls after the incident and was told by Cadillac that my VIN was excluded. 1. POWER TRAIN

at 60,740 miles, "Steering Assist is Reduced Drive with Care" message appeared. Under warranty, but dealership booked for 2 months. Error went away. After powertrain warranty expires (70,000 miles), message constantly appears, and coolant thermostat display is BLANK. Results in excess fan usage (lowering fuel consumption), reduced steering assist, aggravation, check engine light. This issue has developed while under warranty, for a practically new car. Unacceptable. An extended warranty should be in effect for model 2020 as well.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

Vehicle has a known condition with many same year make and model that could cause the engine coolant thermostat to open at a lower temperature than intended. This condition has occurred. As a result the Malfunction Indicator Lamp (Check Engine Light) illuminates and a diagnostic trouble code is set and “steering assistance reduced” appear. The engine cooling fans also run after the engine is switched off. A recent bulletin has been posted to the 2021 Cadillac XT6 but is present in our 2020 as well. Upon calling the dealer our VIN was not on said recall/bulletin.

Transmission shudder at low RPMs. Feels like transmission should down shift sooner, but it shudders and shakes until RPMs get up higher. Does it when RPMs are around the 1500 mark. Vehicle almost seems like it will stall unless you give it more fuel to get RPMs up higher.

Vehicle has a high-pitched whining noise when cold. Vehicle also has a transmission shutter problem at lower RPM. I do not think the two are related rather than two separate incidences. POWER TRAIN

There is a known problem, which Cadillac refuses to recall, regarding a steering assist reduced warning. The warning light disables the air conditioning system and steering assist. When the light comes on, reduced power to the steering system occurs. I took the vehicle in to be serviced, but the service light was off, and Cadillac refused to fix it; intentionally trying to run the timer out on the 5year/70,000 powertrain warranty. It's a known issue, all over the internet. In fact, they recalled several models due to the same problem. "19V-086 / N182182760 Recall Summary If the steering assistance is not available, extra effort would be required to steer the vehicle, and this would increase risk of a crash. General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Cadillac CTS, and 2017 Cadillac ATS, Chevrolet Camaro, and Chevrolet Corvette vehicles." I've reset the light several times, and it usually stays off for several days before returning. This sounds like a software problem, but Cadillac has not taken any steps to fix the issue. It is dangerous for any reduction in steering, especially during winter or at highway speed. It's also dangerous to disable air conditioning, as during the summer, the temperature can reach above 140 F inside a vehicle. If a driver were to have a medical event in a parking lot, or fall asleep with the vehicle on while simply waiting for somebody -- while assuming the air conditioner would keep them cool and comfortable -- within 10 minutes the temperature could reach 130+ degrees, and into the 150s in California or Las Vegas. Software should never reduce steering assist, or disable the air conditioner automatically. I would like a recall to be issued regarding this problem. I don't know if they have designed the system to fail right at the warranty or just after, but it certainly appears that way. Please look into the matter. Cadillac has refused to repair under warranty. [XXX] [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.
