NHTSA investigations into the 2014 Chevrolet Cheverolet SS

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. MY NEW SS WAS MODIFIED WITH HAND CONTROLS. I WAS GOING INTO A TURN AT 50MPH AND MY KNEE GOT CAUGHT BEHIND THE HAND CONTROLS NOT ALLOWING ME TO PUSH MY BRAKES IN GOING AROUND A TURN. I HIT THE CURB TAKING OUT TWO TREES THEN HITTING A THIRD TREE TO BRING THE VEHICLE TO A STOP. THE FRONT END OF MY CAR IS NOW GONE WITH THE RADIATOR PUSHED INTO THE ENGINE. THE VEHICLE IS TOTALED AND NO AIR BAGS DEPLOYED AT ALL. NOT EXACTLY SURE WHEN THE ENGINE CUT OFF BUT WHEN I CAME TO A STOP IT WAS NO LONGER RUNNING AND ONSTAR AUTOMATICALLY CAME ON ASKING IF EVERYONE WAS OK SINCE THE VEHICLE HAD BEEN IN A CRASH. LUCKILY ME AND MY FRIEND RIDING ALONG WERE NOT INJURED.

Driver side mirror blind spot monitoring system suddenly “steady burns”. Will not light up when another vehicle is in vehicles blind spot. BSM stays on even after the car is off and has been off for prolonged periods of time (30+ minutes) leading to the battery draining. This could lead to the car giving the operator false information about cars appearing in the blindspot

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The ONstar module has very high idle power drain. As a result of this, my car battery died when not driven for a week, regardless of the condition/age of the battery. This has occured consistently since I bought the car new and has left me stranded on multiple occasions. This problem has been addressed in the 2015 model years of my car but the recall never applied to my 2014 car, which has the exact same battery drain issue (see SB-10057076-5170 and bulletin no. 14395). I just want the manufacturer to address this so I can get my car fixed without paying a ridiculous price.

I was driving on the highway when it was snowing. And my service power steering light came on. And the steering got hard and I was on a curve so I went off the road because I could not control the vehicle since it was so instant. I got out of the center median and drove it home. Come to find out there was a recall for it I don't think it was properly done.

SEAT BELTS

My seatbelt cable broke on 8/9/2021. I put the belt on and as I was adjusting the belts, the belt/cable that is attached to the floor by driver side door broke. I took it to the Chevrolet dealership to get it fixed and I did see that there was a recall on my model, but my VIN wasn’t listed so the dealership was gonna charge me for the repair. My car has the same issue with the recall but they wanted to charge me to get it fixed even though it was a safety issue! It’s not my fault that the cable broke! It’s Chevrolets’! (NHTSA Recall 16V518) So I’ve been driving without a seatbelt now for 8 days. The dealership didn’t even sound concerned that I could have gone thru my windshield if I were in a wreck! Yes, they actually let me leave the dealership without a seatbelt! No more Chevrolets for me!

SEAT BELTS

I WAS ABSOLUTELY HORRIFIED TODAY WHEN I GOT INTO MY 2014 CHEVROLET SS AND THE SEATBELT DETACHED FROM ITS ANCHOR POINT IN MY HAND WITHOUT ANY WARNING. FROM THE ATTACHED PICTURES, YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE HOW FORTUNATE I AM TO BE ALIVE. THIS HAS BEEN MY FAMILY CAR FOR THE PAST FIVE YEARS, AND JUST THE MERE THOUGHT THAT I HAVE BEEN PUTTING MY FAMILY'S LIFE AT RISK IN THIS CAR IS VERY UPSETTING. I AM DILIGENT WITH ALL MAINTENANCE AND SAFETY RECALLS. FROM THE ATTACHED SERVICE INVOICE YOU CAN SEE THAT I BROUGHT MY CAR TO MUZI CHEVROLET IN NEEDHAM, MA ON 12/27/2016 TO HAVE SERVICE CAMPAIGN 15822 PERFORMED TO REPLACE POTENTIALLY FAULTY SEATBELT ANCHOR CABLES. BECAUSE SAFETY SHOULD ALWAYS BE PARAMOUNT, I ACTED ON THIS VERY SERIOUS RECALL IMMEDIATELY, BUT I AM NOW LEFT WONDERING WHETHER THE SEAT BELT WAS REPLACED WITH AN UPDATED FAULTY PART, OR IF THE RECALL WAS EVER PERFORMED AT ALL. I AM THE FIRST OWNER OF THIS 2014 SS, AND WAS THE FIRST OWNER OF A PONTIAC G8 GT FOR 5 YEARS BEFORE THAT. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED THESE PERFORMANCE CARS, BUT MY FAITH IN GM PRODUCTS HAS BEEN SHATTERED. I NOW FIND MYSELF WITHOUT A CAR BUT I HAVE EVERY CONFIDENCE THAT YOU WILL DO THE RIGHT THING.

STEERING

VEHICLE HAS LOSE OF POWER STEERING DURING NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS. THE VEHICLES STEERING BECOMES EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND DANGEROUS TO DRIVE. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP AND INSPECTED. THE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY REQUIRES REPLACEMENT PER CHEVROLET DEALERSHIP. THE VEHICLE STEERING GEAR ASSEMBLY WAS INSPECTED BEFORE AND WAS NOT REPLACED ON PREVIOUS POWER STEERING RECALL. THE VEHICLE IS NOT LABELED AS PART OF THE CURRENT 2019 AND 2020 CHEVROLET SS RECALLS, ALTHOUGH THE VEHICLE IS HAVING THE EXACT IDENTICAL POWER STEERING PROBLEMS. DEALERSHIP HAS STATED THAT THE REPAIR WILL BE $2800.00. VEHICLE HAS NOT BEEN REPAIRED. THIS CHEVROLET SS AND SHOULD BE ADDED TO RECALL NOTICE THE PRIOR RECALLS DID NOT REPAIR OR FIX THE PROBLEM WITH THE ELECTRIC STEERING ASSEMBLY. I HAVE DRIVEN THIS VEHICLE DURING HIGHWAY DRIVING AND THE POWER STEERING HAS TURNED OFF AND ALMOST CRASHED THE VEHICLE SINCE THIS STEERING PROBLEM BEGAN. VEHICLE IS A 60K MILES ISSUES BEGAN AT 40/50 AND NOW 60 K MILES. STEERING SYSTEM REQUIRES A MAJOR OVERHAUL FOR VEHICLE SAFETY. THIS IS A DANGEROUS VEHICLE TO DRIVE AND CAN NOT BE DRIVEN FARTHER THAN MAYBE 10 MILES.
