NHTSA investigations into the 2011 Dodge Nitro
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Electrical overstress
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this investigation to determine if the failure of airbags to deploy during severe crashes, in certain vehicles, was the result of a safety related defect. During the investigation a complex failure was studied that can result in non-deployment of subject vehicle air bags and other restraint system devices in severe crash events. The subject vehicles may be equipped with an airbag control unit (ACU) for the supplemental restraint system (SRS) Electronic Control Unit (ECU) manufactured by ZF-TRW. The ECU receives signals from crash sensors mount...

Totally Integrated Power Module Failure
In a letter dated August 21, 2014, the Center for Auto Safety (CAS) petitioned the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to initiate a defect investigation of alleged failures associated with the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) installed in Chrysler SUV?s, trucks, and vans beginning in the 2007 model year. The petitioner alleges that TIPM defects may result in engine stall, airbag non-deployment, failure of fuel pump shutoff resulting in unintended acceleration, fire, and other symptoms. On September 25, 2014, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened DP14-004 to...
Recalls on the 2011 Dodge Nitro
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 2020311188,249 units in Canada
Airbag
Issue: On certain vehicles, the emblem on the steering wheel could become loose. If this happens, the emblem or its retainers could become projectiles when the airbag inflates in a crash. Safety Risk: Loose parts that are projected toward the occupants when an airbag deploys could increase the risk of an injury. Corrective Actions: FCA Canada will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the airbag cover on the steering wheel.
Recall 201323125,546 units in Canada
Airbag
On certain vehicles, the airbag warning lamp may illuminate due to an electrical fault within the Occupant Restraint Control (ORC) module. As a result, the Active Head Restraints (AHR) may not deploy during a rear impact collision (where deployment is warranted), which could increase the risk of personal injury to the front seat occupants. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM) or replace the ORC module, as required.
Recall 20112242,270 units in Canada
Steering
Certain vehicles may have been built with a missing or incorrectly installed steering column pivot rivet. A steering column with a miss-installed rivet may not perform as intended in the event of a crash, which may increase the risk of personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect for steering column rivet presence and alignment, and repair as required.

I PURCHASED MY 2011 DODGE NITRO BRAND NEW FROM GULF GATE DODGE HERE IN HOUSTON TX. SINCE THEN, I HAVE HAD NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH THIS TRUCK STARTING IN 2013. LAST YEAR, THE WATER PUMP WENT OUT. THIS YEAR THE FUEL INJECTORS WENT OUT. IN BOTH OCCASIONS, I PAID OUT OF POCKET TO GET THE ISSUES CORRECTED. I HAVE ALSO CALLED THE DEALERSHIP TO ASK FOR ASSISTANCE, AND HAVE HAD NO LUCK. THEY WERE PROBABLY AS HELPFUL AS A GRAIN OF RICE. I WAS NOT MADE AWARE THAT MY REPAIRS WERE COVERED UNDER MY POWERTRAIN WARRANTY UNTIL THE REPAIRS WERE DONE, (HOW CONVENIENT). NOW THE MOST RECENT SITUATION SEEMS TO BE AN ELECTRICAL PROBLEM WITH THE DRIVER'S SIDE POWER MASTER WINDOW SWITCH (PMWS). BACK IN AUG 2014,THE DRIVER WINDOW WENT OUT. THEN 10/17/2014(FRIDAY) THE PASSENGER BACK WINDOW WENT OUT. 10/20/2014, MONDAY EVENING,MY FIANC WENT (AROUND THE CORNER) TO RUN AN ERRAND AND RETURNED HOME WITH IN ABOUT 15 MINUTES, SCREAMING GRAB THE PH!, AND COME OUT SIDE THE DRIVER SIDE DOOR CAUGHT FIRE. APPARENTLY, THE (PMWS) STARTED TO SMOKE AND CAUGHT A FIRE. HE TOLD ME HE WAS UNABLE TO GET OUT THROUGH THE DRIVER SIDE, AND CROSSED OVER TO THE PASSENGER SIDE. WHEN I DID MAKE IT OUTSIDE TO THE TRUCK. YOU COULD SMELL THE BURN, AND SEE WHERE THE SIDE DOOR PANEL WAS MELTED. I REPORTED THIS TO CHRYSLER ON 10/21/2014. TODAY IS 10/30/2014 AND IN SPITE OF THE "SOMEONE WILL CONTACT YOU IN 24HRS" STATEMENTS, I AM STILL WAITING ON THE CALL. I AM STILL REALLY DEEPLY DISTURBED WITH THE THOUGHT THAT MY KIDS FATHER COULD HAVE DIED, OR EVEN WORSE IF IT WOULD HAVE BEEN EITHER OF MY 2 SMALL KIDS OR MY SELF. SINCE THE INCIDENT WITH MY TRUCK. I HAVE HAD TO PAY FOR A RENTAL CAR, WALK TO THE STORES, WALK MY KIDS TO THE BUS STOP. I'M HAVING TO CATCH THE METRO BUS IN THE WE HOURS OF THE MORNING JUST TO MAKE IT TO WORK IN TIME. I'M VERY SADDEN, UPSET, AND CONFUSED WITH THIS. I WILL NEVER PURCHASE ANY CHRYSLER VEHICLES AGAIN.

The contact owns a 2011 Dodge Nitro. The contact stated that the vehicle frequently experienced electrical malfunctions, and the interior lights and windshield wipers would activate spontaneously. The “TEM” warning light was illuminated, and the radio display lights unexpectedly illuminated. Additionally, activating the turn signals unintendedly caused the wipers to activate, and the air bag warning light would remain illuminated. While the vehicle was turned off, the warning lights continued flashing intermittently. The dealer was notified of the failure, but the vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 126,174.

I am experiencing electrical issues with my 2011 Dodge Nitro SXT. Despite replacing the alternator and battery, the SUV continues to have operational problems. Additionally, I replaced the TMP. I subsequently took the vehicle to a local mechanical shop, where it was confirmed that the issue lies with the PCM (Powertrain Control Module). I have read about a recall related to electrical issues in the Nitro, and I would like to inquire about the possibility of obtaining reimbursement. Thank you for your assistance.

AIR BAGS
Airbags: This vehicle has had a recall for a "Ram" emblem being placed over the airbag such that it becomes a projectile in an airbag depleyment. Dodge makes it very difficult to avail of getting it removed. I am not close to the dealership, I am very busy and somewhat disabled. Since the first notice arrived in the mail-- maybe three years ago-- I have returned the notices with a request for them to send a tech to my home and make the repair. I see there has been at least one death due to this obvious flaw, butthey have not cared enough to answer. Why should I take a day so that they can fix this deadly "extra feature" of shrapnel being placed over an explosive? Electrical: This is a serious safety issue that Dodge will not recognize or even discuss. Getting the window back up is a matter of finessing the "up" switch every which way, multiple attempts required (switch has now fallen out). Very distracting, after going through a toll booth after dark and 15 degrees. You can't stop and F with it, you have to do it on the move. It can take as long as five minutes to get it back up (Window now completely disabled). They will do anything to save seventeen cents per car, who cares if it makes it unsafe for the owner. Not Dodge! I wrote to Dodge (no reply), then the MI Attorney General about this, they responded "We have written to this manufacturer twice and have not received a response". Dodge takes no responsibility for their shoddy work. We pay, we die, they keep doing what they do. It disappoints that even the AG's "Consumer Protection Division" has no teeth. Visibility: It would be interesting to learn how many pedestrians have been hit with this particular model. With all the safety regs out there, it's amazing that a design that blocks visibility gets a pass. Unfortunately it is not the kind of thing you can discover in a test drive, but - crosswalks and four-way stops in particular are dangerous. You can hide a Ryder truck behind these A pillars.

I purchased a 2011 Dodge Nitro SUV in March 2021 from a dealer with all recall information. I contacted online about recall and they set-up to take this vehicle to a Dodge dealer to have required recall work done. I will be notified by the recall company when a new part to be place in this vehicle. Now, when I enter this same vehicle VIN it states as 0 recalls. My airbag concern light on my dash remains on and sometimes alerts me by sound! Nothing has been replaced for over 7 months and now it shows no recalls! I have both original Invoice pages from this dealer still stapled together and scanned to email if needed! My vehicle would not pass inspection if needed, because of this issue and safety concerns. When fueling the vehicle gas will spew out after the pump has shut off. I've tried many different things to try and stop this issue. If I fill the tank very slowly it will sometimes not spew or it may cut down on the amount spewed, but it has not made the issue stop. This really is dangerous and ridiculous. From my online research into the issue, it appears to be common with this vehicle. Although an easy, definitive reason was not given. Please address this. Thank you.
