2020 Ford Transit Connect at 68,000 miles Jefferson, GA

STEERING

The contact owns a 2020 Ford Transit Connect. The contact stated that while driving at 65 MPH, the brakes locked up. After releasing the brake pedal, the vehicle began to shake abnormally. While driving, the power steering became inoperable. The Hill Assist, traction control, and steering assist became inoperable. The traction control warning light was illuminated. The contact is a former mechanic and determined that the ABS module hydraulic pump needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired, but the failure recurred. When the vehicle was taken to the independent mechanic, there were no codes displayed. The contact called the local dealer and was referred to the manufacturer and the NHTSA Hotline. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and opened a case. The failure mileage was approximately 68,000.

2016 Ford Transit Connect at 70,000 miles Ocala, FL

STEERING

The contact owns a 2016 Ford Transit Connect. The contact stated that while initially starting the vehicle and while driving at various speeds, the main computer screen displayed the “Hill Stop Assist Not Available" and "Parking Assist Not Available" messages. The check engine and ABS warning lights were illuminated. The speedometer, power steering, and several other unknown messages were displayed intermittently. The vehicle was repaired; however, the failure reoccurred. The vehicle was taken to the dealer after the original failure and was diagnosed and determined that the front passenger’s side wheel position sensor had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic after the second failure, and it was determined that the same front passenger’s and driver’s side wheel position sensors had failed and needed to be replaced. The contact was informed that the steering wheel position sensor had failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer had not been made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 70,000.

Steering knuckle developed a crack through what appears to be defective casting of the part. Crack was noticed prior to separation of steering assembly. This could have created and extreme hazard if not noticed prior to total failure.

No warning lights were illuminated. The vehicle was then taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed that the electronic power steering (EPS) needed to be replaced. The vehicle remained with the independent mechanic awaiting the repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and confirmed there was no power steering recall for his VIN. NHTSA complaint #11463266 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.

2015 Ford Transit Connect Midland, MI

STEERING

The steering rack is not moving freely. Struts, tie rods and U joint are moving freezing but the steering rack is not. This is a huge safety concern because if the steering rack were to lock up and then allow me, the driver, to turn the wheel, that would absolutely cause me to crash. My local automotive service has diagnosed the problem

NHTSA complaint #11446591 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.

2014 Ford Transit Connect at 50,000 miles Felda, FL

STEERING

UPON STARTING THE VEHICLE, THE DASHBOARD DOES NOT PROVIDE INFORMATION, POWER BRAKES DO NOT SEEM TO FUNCTION, POWER STEERING QUITS AND SEVERAL ITEMS SHOW UP ON DASH. UPON CUTTING CAR OFF AND RESTARTING, THEY MAY ALL BE CORRECTED. THE NEXT TIME CAR IS STARTED, IT MAY OR MAY NOT RECUR. THIS HAS HAPPENED ABOUT SIX TIMES RECENTLY AS LATE AS TODAY. OUR FEAR IS WE WILL LOSE CONTROL OF THE CAR WHILE DRIVING AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. IT SEEMS MANY FUNCTIONS ARE CONTROLLED BY COMPUTERS THAT HAVE A FLAW. BRAKES ALSO LOSE POWER.

2014 Ford Transit Connect at 84,000 miles Queens, NY

STEERING

THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING ON MY FORD 2014 TRANSIT SOMETIMES WORKS AND SOMETIMES DOESN'T, BUT IT SOMETIMES, ON THE HIGHWAY, IT SOMETIMES WORKS AND SOMETIMES DOESN'T. ON THE HIGHWAY BENDS, THE THE STEERING WOULD SUDDENLY WORK AND THE CAR WOULD FEEL LIKE IT WAS A BIT OUT OF CONTROL. IT IS FINE IF IT IS COMPLETELY BROKEN BUT IT SOMETIMES WORKS AND SOMETIMES DOESN'T. SOMETIMES WHEN I START THE CAR, IT WORKS BUT WHEN YOU GET ONTO THE HIGHWAY, IT BREAKS. WE ALSO HAVE NO MONEY TO FIX IT. THIS HAPPENS ON FORD A LOT AND MANY CARS HAVE BEEN RECALLED BUT NOT MINE.

NHTSA complaint #11230776 — an unverified report by a vehicle owner.

2014 Ford Transit Connect Rockport, TX

STEERING

HAS BEEN BLOWING THE BACKUP CAMERA 5 AMP FUSE, INTERMITTENTLY FOR THE PAST FEW MONTHS. LAST FEW DAYS THE HILL ASSIST LIGHT AND THE ABS LIGHT COME ON ALSO THE POWER STEERING GOES AWAY NOT A GOOD THING, WHEN I SHUT THE IGNITION OFF THEN BACK ON AGAIN MOST OF THE TIME THE LIGHTS GO OFF AND THE STEERING IS BACK, I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE NEW , IT WAS NEVER IN AN ACCIDENT . THE ONLY REPAIR WAS DONE BY THE LOCAL DEALER THEY REPLACED THE FUEL PUMP AND SENDING UNIT THAT WAS A RECALL..ALSO THE SLIDING DOOR LOCKS THAT WERE A RECALL . I FOUND WIRES GOING TO THE LIFT GATE HAVE HAD THE INSULATION SKINNED OFF BECAUSE THEY RUB ON THE INNER BODY PANEL HOLE.. AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PICTURES I USED LIQUID ELECTRICAL TAPE ON THE WIRES AND PUT PLASTIC SPLIT WIRE LOOM TUBING OVER THE WIRES. ALSO TOOK WHITE RUBBER TUBE AND SPLIT IT AND PUT IT ON THE INNER PANEL OPENING THAT CAUSED THE WIRE INSULATION TO GET RUBBED OFF. THIS FORD TRANSIT CONNECT VAN HAS 32,000 MILES....I THOUGHT FIXING THESE WIRES WOULD CURE THE PROBLEM , AFTER GOING FOR A COUPLE RIDES AND LIFTING THE TAILGATE IT STILL BLOWS THE FUSE. AND THE OTHER LIGHTS STILL COME ON. OBVIOUSLY THE SKINNED WIRES I REPAIRED WERE A PROBLEM , THERE APPARENTLY IS ANOTHER ISSUE OR TWO
