A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

Recalls on the 2004 GMC Savana

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2023210 25,587 units in Canada

Electrical

Issue: On certain vehicles, an unused wiring harness for a rear HVAC blower motor, located in the left B-pillar area, could become damaged if exposed to moisture or contaminants. If this happens, the wires could short circuit. Note: This recall only affects cutaway chassis incomplete vehicles. Safety Risk: A short circuit can create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: General Motors will notify owners by mail and instruct you to bring your vehicle to a dealership to seal the wiring for the rear HVAC blower motor at the left B-pillar.

Recall 2012265 951 units in Canada

Fuel System

On certain vehicles equipped with a left side cargo door, and originally sold in or currently operated in areas of heavy road salt usage during winter months (Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, and Newfoundland & Labrador), the fuel filler pipe could corrode and become perforated. This could allow fuel to leak onto the ground while refuelling the vehicle. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the fuel filler pipe.

Recall 2008120 106 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

Certain full-size passenger, cargo and cutaway vans may have front and rear seat belt buckles that will not latch or will not unlatch. There are two conditions that render the buckle inoperative after customer usage. Specifically, (1) with a damaged ejector hood, the latch tongue cannot fully enter the buckle and will not latch, and (2) if the release bar moves permanently out of position the buckle will either be unable to engage the latch or the pushbutton will be unable to unlatch the buckle. Correction: Dealers will inspect buckles and, if found to be inoperative, the entire buckle assembly will be replaced. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2005390.

Recall 2005390 39,243 units in Canada

Recall 2005033 5,014 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the hydraulic brake booster's pressure accumulator may crack and/or separate from the Hydro-Boost assembly during normal vehicle operating conditions. If a separation occurred and the hood of the vehicle was open, fragments from the accumulator could cause injury to people in the immediate area. In addition, the presence of this crack or fractured surface could allow the hydraulic fluid to leak from the accumulator circuit of the booster assembly. The loss of fluid would cause increased steering and braking effort. Correction: Dealers will test and, if necessary, replace the Hydro-Boost assembly.

Recall 2004216 521 units in Canada

Other

On certain vehicles, the transmission shift cable may allow the transmission indicator (PRNDL) to indicate a different gear selected than the transmission is in. If this condition occurred while a vehicle is resting on an uneven surface, the vehicle could roll away after the driver has exited. Correction: Dealer will inspect and replace the transmission shift cable assembly.

Recall 2004138 65 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

Certain vehicles do not comply with the requirements of CMVSS 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies". These vehicles may have been produced with seat belt buckle assemblies containing a latch with a brittle condition that may not withstand the force requirements of the standard. In a crash, if the safety belt buckle fails, an occupant's injuries could be greater. Correction: Dealer will install new seat belt assemblies.

Recall 2004037 4,075 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the relief valve o-ring seal within the brake hydro-boost module could fail. If this happens during braking applications, the driver may be able to hear an engine compartment noise similar to the sound that occurs when the steering wheel is turned to a full stop position. The driver could also experience a slight increase in steering efforts while braking and parking. Under certain driving conditions, a slight increase in the applied brake pedal effort may be required to achieve the same vehicle deceleration rate as prior to the seal failure. Correction: Dealers will inspect the hydro-boost module, and replace it, if necessary.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

The dealer was made aware of the failure and scheduled an upcoming appointment; however, the vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that there was no recall associated with the VIN. The contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 04V045000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic) however, the VIN was not included in the recall. The failure mileage was approximately 92,000.

POWER TRAIN

THE VEHICLE IS OUT OF WARRANTY. HOWEVER, IT ONLY HAS 63K PLUS MILES ON THE ODOMETER. THE TRANSMISSION SUDDENLY BECAME ERRATIC. IT WOULD NOT SHIFT TO "D", BUT THE SECOND AND THE FIRST GEAR WORKS FINE. WE WERE TOLD BY GMC CUSTOMER SERVICE TO HAVE IT INSPECTED AND HAVE IT DIAGNOSED BY A GMC DEALER TO FIND OUT THE EXACT CAUSE OF THE PROBLEM. THE RESULTS INDICATED NO PROBLEMS WERE DETECTED OR NO CODES WERE SHOWING UP ON THEIR COMPUTER, GMC THEN TOLD US THAT IT NEEDS A NEW TRANSMISSION. WE COULD NOT AFFORD A NEWLY REBUILT TRANSMISSION.

FUEL LINE FROM GAS TANK TO "QUICK CONNECT" SPLIT NEAR THE MUFFLER. WITH THE PRESSURE OF THE FUEL PUMP, GASOLINE WAS SPEWING OUT OF THE LINE UNDER THE TRUCK NEAR THE MUFFLER. IT HAD HAPPENED TWO WEEKS OR SO EARLIER BUT I DIDN'T NOTICE IT BECAUSE I'D HAD A GAS SPILL FROM A LEAF BLOWER IN THE BACK OF THE VAN AND THOUGHT THAT WAS THE SMELL (EVEN THOUGH I'D WIPED IT UP). I WENT TO MY MECHANIC TO SEE IF HE COULD CLEAN THE SPILL. HE FOUND THE SPLIT THAT WAS CAUSING THE ODOR. IT WOULD SEEM TO BE A REAL FIRE HAZARD. THE FUEL LINE IS PLASTIC, MY MECHANIC SAYS, AND THERE ARE VERY FEW AVAILABLE (NONE AT FACTORY WAREHOUSES).
