NHTSA investigations into the 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Recalls on the 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.

Risk: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.

15V100000

STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2008-2010 Elantra vehicles manufactured June 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010, and 2009-2010 Elantra Touring vehicles manufactured November 1, 2008, to April 30, 2010. The electronic power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may sense a discrepancy in the steering input signals and, as a result, disable the steering power assist.

Risk: If power steering assist is lost, greater driver effort would be required to steer the vehicle at low speeds, increasing the risk of a crash.

13V113000

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake tra

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2020159 710 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain vehicles, the driver-front airbag inflator could rupture when the airbag deploys in a crash. If this happens, the airbag may not fully inflate and fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants. UPDATE - October 14, 2024: This recall has been expanded to include certain Elantra Touring vehicles. Safety Risk: An airbag inflator that ruptures can create a risk of injury or death. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the driver-front airbag inflator.

Recall 2020045 39,178 units in Canada

Brakes

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS), moisture can enter the ABS control module and cause a short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk. This can happen even if the vehicle is parked. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a relay to power off the ABS control module when the vehicle is turned off.

Recall 2019542 35,309 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain cars, there may be a problem in the airbag control unit that can cause with airbags to deploy without a crash. As a result, the front airbags and seat belt pretensioners could deploy when the vehicle is stopped or moving at slow speeds. Safety Risk: Airbags or seat belt pretensioners that deploy without a crash could create a risk of injury and may also increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your car to a dealer to update the software for the airbag control unit.

Recall 2018173 2,852 units in Canada

Airbag

Update - October 21, 2024: This parts recovery campaign was re-opened and its scope expanded. Hyundai Auto Canada is conducting a parts recovery campaign targeting 2009 Elantra and Elantra Touring vehicles built between January 15 and April 15, 2009. Owners of subject vehicles will be notified by mail and the driver frontal airbag module will be replaced at no charge. The parts are being recovered to aid in Hyundai's analysis in support of Transport Canada defect investigation file no. 3280-38-18. Note: No safety defect has been identified with these vehicles and this action is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Recall 2015089 58,320 units in Canada

Steering

Certain vehicles equipped with electric power steering (EPS) may experience a sudden loss of power steering assist that could occur at any time while driving. If the electronic control unit (ECU) were to sense a discrepancy in the torque sensing circuitry of the steering system, and indicator lamp would illuminate in the instrument cluster to inform the driver that steering assist is no longer provided. Steering control could be maintained, as the vehicle will revert to a manual steering mode, but would require greater driver effort. The sudden change in steering may increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will update the electric power steering (EPS) control unit.

Recall 2013325 110,104 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may fail and cause intermittent operation of the brake lights. Failure of the brake lights to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the switch.

STEERING

I have a 2009 Hyundai Elantra Touring with 2 recalls. I first noticed a problem on 7/25/21 when my Power Steering stopped working all of a sudden. So I Googled the info & discovered that it was a recall: #127 - EPS And, then discovered the other recall: #188 - ABS I contacted Hyundai on Mon 7/26/21 & spoke w/ Tiffany & she started a claim: #18490296. I was told my car would be picked up within 2-3 days & taken to the Hyundai Dealership & all repairs would be done FREE OF CHARGE. As of 8/11/21 it has been a total of 16 days since starting the claim & I have made phone calls every day & documented who I have spoken to. I am getting the runaround & no one can tell me when my car will be picked up & taken to be fixed. (Cust Svc Reps agreed that it shouldn't be taking this long!) I am fed up, frustrated & I don't know what to do from here. I have read that with the recalls, it isn't safe to drive my car & because of these issues. It is costing me time & money being out of work! This is so un-acceptable & I need answers as to what to do & how I'm ever going to get my car repaired?! I'm glad I found your website & I just hope someone can give me some feedback & help in getting this problem resolved! I desperate! So whomever reads this message, I'm begging you Please help me?! Thank You very much!

I WAS NOTIFIED OF A RECALL FOR THE ABS BREAKS STATING THAT THERE COULD BE A SHORT CIRCUIT ISSUE AND COULD CAUSE A FIRE IN THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT. I CALLED HYUNDAI IN LATE JULY 2020, SCHEDULED AN APPOINTMENT FOR A BROKEN WINDOW AND RECALL. UPON LEAVING THE HYUNDAI DEALERSHIP I WAS TOLD THAT THE RECALL PART IS NOT AVAILABLE AND NEEDED TO BE ORDERED. IT IS NOW OCTOBER 15, 2020 AND THE PART HAS STILL NOT ARRIVED. I HAVE CALLED THE DEALERSHIP AND THEY HAVE STATED THAT THEY HAVE APPROXIMATELY 20 PEOPLE WAITING FOR THIS PART AND THEY HAVE ONLY RECEIVED 5 PARTS. IT HAS BEEN ALMOST 3 MONTHS. I BELIEVE THAT THE DEALERSHIP HAS DONE EVERYTHING THAT THEY CAN BUT HYUNDAI IS LAGGING. I REALLY HOPE THAT THE ENGINE COMPARTMENT OF MY CAR DOESN'T CATCH FIRE.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL

I WAS DRIVING ON THE HIGHWAY WITH CRUISE CONTROL ON. WHEN I TURNED THE CRUISE CONTROL OFF, THE CAR WOULD NOT SLOW DOWN. IN FACT, THE CAR INCREASED IN SPEED EVEN WITH THE CRUISE CONTROL COMPLETELY OFF. I STEPPED ON THE BREAKS AND IT SLOWED DOWN A BIT, BUT AS SOON AS I STEPPED OFF THE BREAK THE CAR WOULD START TO ACCELERATE. I MADE MY WAY OFF THE EXIT AND PRESSED THE BREAK HARD AND WITH THE HELP WITH EMERGENCY BREAK, I WAS ABLE TO STOP AT THE SIDE OF THE EXIT AND WAS ABLE TO TURN OFF THE CAR. AS SOON AS I STARTED UP THE CAR AGAIN, THE ENGINE REVVED REAL HIGH. I OPENED THE HOOD OF THE CAR AND SAW THAT PLASTIC ENGINE COVER HAD SPLIT AND THE BROKEN PIECE WAS JAMMING THE THROTTLE CABLE. I BELIEVE THIS IS A HIGHLY DANGEROUS ISSUE. I'VE INCLUDED PICTURES OF THE BROKEN PART AND WHERE THE BROKEN PART WAS TOUCHING THE THROTTLE.

STEERING

MY ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING WENT OUT, THANKFULLY AS I WAS BACKING OUT MY GARAGE. THE HYUNDAI DEALER SAID THE MOTOR NEEDS TO BE REPLACED BUT THE MOTOR IS INSIDE THE STEERING COLUMN, SO I NEED A WHOLE NEW COLUMN. THIS RUNS AROUND $1,600 INCLUDING LABOR. AFTER SEARCHING ONLINE, THIS APPEARS TO BE A WIDESPREAD ISSUE WITH THE ELANTRA. EVEN SOMEONE AT THE DEALER SAID THEY DON'T KNOW WHY THERE ISN'T A RECALL. I FEEL LIKE ONE SHOULD BE ISSUED ALTHOUGH IT WOULD BE TOO LATE TO SAVE ME FROM PAYING $1,600.

THERE WERE NO ISSUES WITH THE CAR UNTIL EPS (RED) AND ESC OFF (YELLOW) LIGHTS CAME ON WHEN THE CAR WAS STARTED ONE EVENING, AND IN TURN THE POWER STEERING WAS LOST. VEHICLE WAS DRIVEN EARLIER IN THE DAY WITHOUT ANY PROBLEMS. IT WAS PARKED FOR ABOUT 30 MINUTES OR SO, AND WHEN IT WAS TURNED ON AGAIN THE LIGHTS CAME ON AND THE STEERING WHEEL FELT LIKE IT WAS LOCKED. IT IS VERY DIFFICULT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL AT LOW SPEEDS. VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A LOCAL HYUNDAI DEALER WHERE ERROR CODES C1260, C1604, AND C1513 WERE DIAGNOSED. THE DEALER PERFORMED THE STEERING ANGLE RE-CALIBRATION AND THE ECU SOFTWARE UPDATE, BUT THE ERRORS PERSISTED. THE DEALERSHIP STATED THAT ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING COLUMN AND THE STOP LAMP SWITCH NEEDED TO BE REPLACED. THESE EXACT TWO PARTS WERE A SUBJECT OF TWO SEPARATE RECALLS FOR THIS VEHICLE (CAMPAIGNS # 110 AND 127) AND WERE REPAIRED/SERVICED IN 2015 AND THE RECALL WAS CLOSED. IT IS VERY STRANGE THAT BOTH OF THESE PARTS WOULD FAIL AGAIN WITHOUT ANY NOTICE, PARTICULARLY THE ELECTRONIC POWER STEERING COLUMN, CONSIDERING THAT THE CAR ONLY HAS 47000 MILES AND THIS PART WAS REPAIRED IN 2015.

EMERGENCY BRAKE HANDLE IS LOOSE. RANDOMLY WHILE DRIVING THE EBRAKE LIGHT COMES ON THE DASHBOARD. TO MAKE THE LIGHT GO AWAY, I HAVE TO TAP THE BRAKE DOWN. THE LEVER HANDLE IS LOOSE AND SHAKES WHEN I AM DRIVING. THIS COULD BE A DANGEROUS SITUATION. THIS HAPPENS DAILY. THIS STARTED HAPPENING A FEW MONTHS AGO.

AIR BAGS

DRIVING ON HIGHWAY 65 MPH, POWER STEERING WENT OUT. WHEN I REACHED MY DESTINATION WHICH WAS ANOTHER 20 MILES AWAY I RESEARCHED AND A BIT AND WHEN I TURNED CAR BACK ON A FEW HOURS LATER IT WAS WORKING AGAIN. I RECEIVED A RECALL LETTER ABOUT IT ALMOST A YEAR LATER. WHY DID I JUST RECEIVE THAT? TOOK TO DEALERSHIP FOR THAT AND THREE OTHER RECALLS (TWO I WAS NOT AWARE OF. THE STOP LIGHT I DID GET A LETTER ABOUT, HOWEVER THE AIRBAG LIGHT HAS BEEN ON FOR MONTHS AND I SEE BY READING THESE OTHER COMPLAINTS THAT THERE SHULD BE A RECALL ABOUT THAT. DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THE WHOLE STERRING MECHANISM IS BAD AND ARE REPLACING THIS WEEK. THE HIGH PROFILE TIRES HAVE BEEN A NIGHTMARE SINCE I BOUGHT THE VEHICLE, EXPENSIVE FOR THAT SIZED CAR AND DON'T LAST MORE THAN 30K MILES. I DON'T THINK THE TIRE ISSUE HAS ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE BRANDING. AFTER READING ALL THESE COMPLANTS, I MOST LIKELY WILL NOT BUY FROM HYUNDAI AGAIN. THE AIRBAG ISSUE IS AN EXPENSIVE FIX, A POTENTIAL SAFETY HAZARD AND SHOULD BE RECTIFIED BY HYUNDAI. STAND BEHIND YOUR PRODUCT, SIMPLE ETHICAL EXPECTATION
