NHTSA investigations into the 2007 Hyundai Entourage

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Recalls on the 2007 Hyundai Entourage

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

20V061000

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2007-2010 Elantra and 2009-2011 Elantra Touring vehicles. On February 21, 2020 Hyundai expanded the recall to include 46,425 model year 2007-2008 Entourage and 2007 Santa Fe vehicles. Moisture may enter the Anti-lock Brake (ABS) Module and result in an electrical short.

Risk: An electrical short within the ABS Module may cause an engine compartment fire, even when the car is turned off, increasing the risk of an injury.

16V843000

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES:HOOD:LATCH

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Entourage vehicles manufactured February 16, 2006, to June 30, 2008. In the affected vehicles, the secondary hood latch may corrode and bind and remain in the unlatched position when the hood is closed.

Risk: If the primary latch is inadvertently released and the secondary latch is not engaged, the hood could unexpectedly open while driving, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

13V556000

SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:LOWER ARM

Hyundai America Technical Center, Inc. (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Hyundai Entourage vehicles manufactured from February 16, 2006, through June 30, 2008 and sold in, or currently registered in, Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Wisconsin, Connecticut, Delaware, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Maine, Minnesota, Missouri, New Jersey, Ohio, Rhode Island, West Virginia and the District of Columbia. In the affected vehicles, the front lower control arms may fracture due to corrosion resulting from exposure to road salt and water.

Risk: A fractured control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

13V113000

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake tra

Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH

HYUNDAI IS RECALLING 532,633 MY 2006-2007 ACCENT, ENTOURAGE, SONATA, MY 2007 AZERA, ELANTRA AND SANTA FE, MY 2005-2007 TUCSON AND MY 2007-2008 VERACRUZ VEHICLES. THE STOP LAMP SWITCH IN THE AFFECTED VEHICLES MAY MALFUNCTION. A MALFUNCTIONING STOP LAMP SWITCH MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO NOT ILLUMINATE WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED OR MAY CAUSE THE BRAKE LIGHTS TO REMAIN ILLUMINATED WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS RELEASED. A STOP LAMP SWITCH MALFUNCTION MAY ALSO AFFECT THE OPERATION OF THE BRAKE-TRANSMISSION SHIFT INTERLOCK FEATURE SO THE TRANSMISSION SHIFTER WOULD NOT BE ABLE TO BE SHIFTED OUT OF THE PARK POSITION. IT MAY ALSO CAUSE THE ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC) MALFUNCTION LIGHT TO ILLUMINATE, AND IT MAY NOT DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE CONTROL WHEN THE BRAKE PEDAL IS DEPRESSED.

Risk: ANY OF THESE MALFUNCTIONS, ALONE OR IN COMBINATION, MAY LEAD TO A CRASH.

06V356000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:WIRING

ON CERTAIN MINIVANS EQUIPPED WITH ADJUSTABLE BRAKE PEDALS, THE STOP LAMP SWITCH WIRING HARNESS MAY BE OUT OF POSITION. AN IMPROPERLY POSITIONED STOP LAMP SWITCH WIRING HARNESS COULD MAKE CONTACT WITH THE U-JOINT ASSEMBLY OF THE STEERING COLUMN. REPEATED CONTACT MAY EVENTUALLY CAUSE THE WIRING HARNESS INSULATION TO CHAFE.

Risk: CHAFED INSULATION COULD CAUSE A SHORT OF THE WIRING HARNESS RESULTING IN THE LOSS OF BRAKE LIGHTS, ENGINE STALLING, OR AN INABILITY TO START THE VEHICLE INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2020045 39,178 units in Canada

Brakes

Issue: On certain vehicles equipped with an anti-lock brake system (ABS), moisture can enter the ABS control module and cause a short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk. This can happen even if the vehicle is parked. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to install a relay to power off the ABS control module when the vehicle is turned off.

Recall 2016596 6,102 units in Canada

Structure

On certain vehicles, the secondary hood latch could corrode, and may result in the mechanical binding of the latch. This could cause the secondary hood latch to remain in the open position when the hood is closed. If the vehicle were to be driven with the primary hood latch disengaged, or primary hood latch is released while driving, there is a potential that the secondary hood latch may not hold the hood closed while the vehicle is in motion. If this were to occur, it could compromise the driver’s ability to see the road and its users, as well as cause damage to the windshield. These issues could result in a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will replace the hood latch mechanisms.

Recall 2013389 6,102 units in Canada

Suspension

On certain vehicles, road salt can corrode the front control arms, which may ultimately lead to control arm failure. This could result in a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will inspect the control arms and either apply an anticorrosion treatment or replace control arms, as necessary.

Recall 2013325 110,104 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may fail and cause intermittent operation of the brake lights. Failure of the brake lights to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the switch.

Recall 2009120 67,976 units in Canada

Lights And Instruments

On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may have been incorrectly installed during vehicle assembly. This could prevent proper brake lamp operation. Failure of the brake lamps to illuminate when the brakes are applied may result in the following road users being unaware of the driver's intentions, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury or death. A malfunction of the switch may also cause the brake lamps to remain illuminated when the brake pedal is released. Additionally, a faulty switch may affect the operation of the brake-transmission shift interlock on automatic transmission-equipped vehicles so that the transmission shifter would not be able to be shifted out of PARK position. It may also cause the Electronic Stability Control (ESC) light to illuminate, and it may not deactivate the cruise control when the brake pedal is depressed. Correction: Dealers will replace the stop lamp switch assembly.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

The valve over eventually leaks oil that drips down on to the alternator. This cause the electrical system to fail, the battery and brake lights come on. Then slowly all lights come on as battery shuts down. This is a known issue with this engine. This happened to me yesterday while driving at night leaving the car unable to drive. When the battery completely shuts down you cannot even move the vehicle out of Park, as electric is needed to disengage the the shifter from park, so you cannot even push the vehicle off of the road. Hyundai has a recall for the exact same engine in the Veracruz. I just purchased this car however records don't show this as a active recall so either it was serviced and not properly fixed therefore still making it dangerous for my family and others or was never completed and being sold as a unsafe vehicle to my sister whom I brought this vehicle from. When she bought it nothing about this recall 115 was listed so she was not aware when selling this van to us.

IN JUNE OF THIS YEAR, WE RECEIVED AN 'IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL' FROM HYUNDAI, INSTRUCTING ME TO PARK MY CAR OUTSIDE AND AWAY FROM STRUCTURES AND OTHER VEHICLES UNTIL A REPAIR IS COMPLETED. I BROUGHT THE CAR TO RUSSELL WESTBROOK HYUNDAI IN GARDEN GROVE ON JUNE 15TH OF THIS YEAR. WE WERE TOLD THAT IT WOULD BE READY LATER THAT DAY. THEN THE 16TH. THEN THE 17TH. THEN THE 18TH. THEN THE 19TH. THEN I WAS TOLD THE PARTS WOULD ARRIVE IN A COUPLE OF DAYS AND DID I WANT TO LEAVE THE CAR THERE. I DECLINED. ON JUNE 22, I CALLED THE PARTS DEPARTMENT AND WAS TOLD THE PARTS WOULD ARRIVE IN THE MIDDLE OF JULY. I CALLED AT THAT TIME AND I WAS TOLD IT WOULD BE THE END OF JULY. I WAS ADVISED THAT I WOULD BE CONTACTED WITHIN 3-5 DAYS. TWO MONTHS HAVE GONE BY WITH NO FURTHER WORD. I'M 77 YEARS OLD AND I'M UNEASY DRIVING THIS CAR.

DRIVING APPROXIMATELY 56-57 MPH DOWN A STATE ROUTE RD WHEN THE HOOD CAME UNLATCHED AND FLEW UP AND SHATTERED THE WINDSHIELD AND BREAKING THE HOODS HYDRAULIC LIFT ARM. I FOUND OUT THE HOOD LATCH WAS RECALLED BY HYUNDAI PRIOR TO THIS HAPPENING AND WE DIDN'T KNOW. HYUNDAI WAS CONTACTED AND THEY ARE REFUSING TO ASSIST WITH GETTING THE VEHICLE TO THE DEALERSHIP AND TELLING US THAT THEY ARE ONLY RESPONSIBLE FOR THE HOOD LATCH AND NOT THE OTHER DAMAGE THAT WAS CAUSED BY THE HOOD LATCH FAILING WHILE DRIVING.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

WE PURCHASED OUR 2007 HYUNDAI ENTOURAGE IN 2015 AND 2 MONTHS AFTER WE BOUGHT IT BOTH DOORS MOTORS STOPPED WORKING. THE DRIVER SIDE PASSENGER DOOR WILL ONLY OPEN ABOUT 10 TO 15 INCHES. WE'VE HAD TO USE THE HANDLES TO OPEN BOTH DOOR AND THE HANDLES BROKE. I CAN ONLY ASSUME THAT THEY BROKE BECAUSE THEY WERE NOT MADE TO BE USED SINCE THE DOORS ARE SUPPOSED TO BE USED WITH A REMOTE AND ARE MOTORIZED. WE'VE ALSO HAD TO REPLACE OUR HEAD LIGHTS AND BACK LIGHTS ABOUT 6 TO 8 TIMES THAT'S MORE THAN I'VE CHANGED ANY LHEAD LIGHTS ON ALL MY VEHICLES IN MY ENTIRE 44 YEARS OF OWNING CARS. THIS VEHICLE HAS HAD 6 RECALLS SINCE WE PURCHASED IT IN 2015. PLEASE JUST RECALL AND REPLACE THE WHOLE VEHICLE TO MAKE UP FOR HOW POORLY THIS VEHICLE WAS MADE AND THROWN TOGETHER. TY
