AIR BAGS

The controls (buttons) on the right side of my steering wheel progressed from slow to respond to completely unresponsive, and then the driver airbag light started coming on. At first it was intermittent, then constant. I didn't expect those two issues to be related but did come to learn it was the clock switch. According to my Hyundai dealer, this is a known issue in several other years/models of Hyundais and they have extended those warranties, "but it hasn't reached the Tucson yet". I was told that either 1 - my airbag wouldn't deploy or 2 - it would deploy randomly when I was driving the vehicle. I spent nearly $1000 in diagnostics and repairs.

When the car is started the airbag light on the dashboard lights up. It will eventually turn off anywhere from 5-30 minutes. I scheduled an appointment with the dealer and was informed , after 10 hours, that they do not have the equipment required to conduct a diagnostic test and they don't know how long it would take to obtain equipment once they requested it. I was told it would cost me a minimum of $850.00 to have test conducted once the equipment arrived since my car was over the 50,000 mile warranty. This cost is just for the diagnostic test. Since this is an ongoing airbag issue on numerous vehicles; I assumed this is a safety issue and would trump the warranty time frame. Please provide any type of assistance on this matter.

AIRBAG INDICATOR ICON STAYED LIT RATHER THAN GOING OUT AFTER A FEW SECONDS WHEN CAR WAS STARTED. PROBLEM IDENTIFIED BY DEALERSHIP AS AIR BAG NEEDS TO BE REPLACED. THE DEALERSHIP WILL HAVE HAD MY CAR MORE THAN 2 MONTHS BECAUSE THERE ARE NO AIRBAG MECHANISMS IN THE US AND WE ARE WAITING FOR MORE TO BE PRODUCED. THE LIKELY REASON FOR THIS DELAY IS THAT MORE HAVE BEEN USED THAN PLANNED, AND THIS SHOULD BE A RECALL ISSUE IF SO MANY NEEDED REPLACEMENT.

AIR BAGS

PASSENGER AIR BAG OFF LIGHT REMAINS ON WHENEVER AN ADULT WEIGHING MORE THA 120 LBS ARE SITTING IN THE PASSENGER SEAT WITH A SMALL PILLOW OR SEAT CUSHION ON THE SEAT. PILLOW IS NEEDED TO ENHANCE SEATING COMFORT, ESPECIALLY ON LONG ROAD TRIPS. LIGHT DOES WORK WHEN PILLOW IS NOT USED. UNFORTUNATELY, SEAT IS POORLY DESIGNED THAT REQUIRES ADDITIONAL AFTER MARKET SUPPORT TO MAKE IT USABLE ON LONG TRIPS. SENSOR NEED TO DETECT PASSENGER WEIGHT WITH OR WITHOUT ADDITIONAL CUSHIONS OR ACTIVATE THE AIRBAG 100% OF THE TIME. I HAVE ALREADY REPORTED THIS TO HYUNDAI, CASE NUMBER 10626629. THEY CLAIMED THE LIGHT IS WORKING AS DESIGNED, ONLY WHEN USED WITHOUT AFTER MARKET CUSHION. MY RESPONSE IS THAT IT IS A MAJOR SAFETY DEFECT IN DESIGN, IT OBVIOUSLY FAILED IN DETECTING THE TOTAL WEIGHT ON THE PASSENGER SEAT. I BELIEVE THAT HYUNDAI WOULD BE AT FAULT SHOULD THE AIRBAG FAILED TO DEPLOY DURING AN ACCIDENT AND THE PASSENGER IS SERIOUSLY INJURED OR KILLED. THERE ARE ADDITIONAL REASONS TO USE CUSHIONS FOR HEALTH OR HANDICAPPED PERSON, FOR EXAMPLE. HOW HARD IS IT TO DETECT TOTAL WEIGHT OF MORE THAN 90 LBS ON TOP OF THAT SEST? THE LIGHT REMAINS OFF WHEN CAR IS MOVING OR STOPPED. IN ADDITION, I HAVE ALSO EXPERIENCED NO ACCELERATION ON A LEFT TURN WHEN STEPPED ON GAS, AS PREVIOUSLY REPORTED BY OTHER'S. ENGINE WOULD REV TO OVER 2000 RPM BUT THE CAR US NOT MOVING FOR ABOUT 30+ SECONDS. THIS IS A VERY SERIOUS SAFETY ISSUE WHEN YOU'RE STUCK ON A LEFT TURN.
