NHTSA investigations into the 2014 Infiniti Q50

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Occupant Classification System Failure

In April 2014, Nissan North America launched Safety Recall 14V-138 to address problems with the Occupant Classification System (OCS) algorithm in the following vehicles: model year (MY) 2013-2014 Nissan Altima, Pathfinder, Sentra and LEAF; MY 2013 Infiniti JX35; MY 2014 Infiniti QX60 and Q50; and MY 2013 Nissan NV 200/Taxi vehicles.According to Nissan, the OCS may misclassify adult front passenger occupants and turn off the passenger's frontal air bag for an adult occupant of sufficient weight. In March 2015, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened this Recall Query after the agency re...

Recalls on the 2014 Infiniti Q50

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

24V470000

POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DRIVESHAFT

Nissan North America, Inc. (INFINITI) is recalling certain 2011-2013 M56, 2012-2013 M35 Hybrid, 2014-2018 Q50, Q70 Hybrid, 2014-2019 Q70, and 2015-2019 Q70L two-wheel drive vehicles. The driveshaft can fatigue and break.

Risk: A broken driveshaft can result in a loss of drive power, or a vehicle roll away when the vehicle is in park without the parking brake applied. Both scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.

16V430000

STEERING:AUTOMATED/ADAPTIVE STEERING

Nissan North America, Inc.'s (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2014-2016 Infiniti Q50 vehicles manufactured December 26, 2012, to December 11, 2015, and Infiniti Q50 Hybrid vehicles manufactured December 10, 2012, to December 17, 2015. The Direct Adaptive Steering system may experience an error at vehicle start up altering the vehicle's steering responsiveness and turning radius.

Risk: If the vehicle does not steer as the driver anticipates, there is an increased the risk of a crash.

16V244000

AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2016-2017 Nissan Maxima, 2013-2016 Nissan Altima, NV200, LEAF, Sentra, and Pathfinder, 2014-2016 Nissan NV200 Taxi, Infiniti QX60, QX60 Hybrid, and Q50 Hybrid, 2014-2017 Nissan Rogue and Infiniti Q50, 2015-2016 Nissan Murano, Murano Hybrid, and Chevrolet City Express, 2014-2015 Nissan Pathfinder Hybrid, and 2013 Infiniti JX35 vehicles. In these vehicles, the front seat passenger Occupant Classification System (OCS) may incorrectly classify an adult passenger as a child or classify the seat as empty despite it being occupied. As a result, the passenger frontal air bag may be turned off and not deploy in the event of a crash.

Risk: If the passenger frontal air bag does not deploy as intended in the event of a crash, the passenger is at an increased risk of injury.

14V138000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2013-2014 Altima, LEAF, Pathfinder, and Sentra, model year 2013 NV200 (aka Taxi) and Infiniti JX35 and model year 2014 Infiniti Q50 and QX60 vehicles. In the affected vehicles, the occupant classification system (OCS) software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult.

Risk: If the OCS does not detect an adult occupant in the passenger seat, the passenger airbag would be deactivated. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the passenger.

13V588000

STEERING:ELECTRIC POWER ASSIST SYSTEM

Nissan North America, Inc.'s (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2014 Infiniti Q50 vehicles equipped with Direct Adaptive Steering. The affected vehicles received a power steering software version that, should the engine compartment reach freezing temperatures, the power steering software may disable the electric steering system and also may delay the engagement of the mechanical steering backup system.

Risk: The disablement of the steering systems could result in a loss of steering, increasing the risk of a crash.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2016296 3,804 units in Canada

Steering

On certain vehicles, a combination of low battery voltage at engine start up (~7 volts) and the vehicle being parked with the wheels turned could cause an error in the Direct Adaptive Steering ECU. This could cause the steering wheel to be off centered and the VDC warning lamp to illuminate. If operated this way, this could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will update the Direct Adaptive Steering ECU.

Recall 2016179 257,130 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

On certain vehicles, a defect in the occupant classification system could allow an adult sitting in the front passenger seat to be classified as a child or an “empty seat”. This would suppress the airbag, which could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Correction: For affected Altima, Maxima, Murano, Rogue and Sentra vehicles, dealers will reprogram the airbag control unit and the occupant classification system control unit. For affected Leaf, NV200, Pathfinder, Q50 and JX35/QX60 vehicles, dealers will replace the occupant classification system electronic control unit.

Recall 2016123 442 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, the front passenger seat occupant classification system software may incorrectly classify the passenger seat as empty, when it is occupied by an adult. If this occurs, the passenger airbag would be deactivated without the illumination of the airbag warning lamp. Failure of the passenger airbag to deploy during a crash (where deployment is warranted) could increase the risk of injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the occupant classification system. This is an expansion of recall 2014-093.

Recall 2014416 73 units in Canada

Powertrain

On certain hybrid vehicles, the transmission housing may have been damaged during manufacturing. This could allow a crack in the housing to form, and could eventually result in a transmission housing fracture, which would result in debris being spread onto the roadway, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the transmission assembly if cracks are found during inspection.

Recall 2014415 511 units in Canada

Powertrain

On certain hybrid vehicles, a defect in engine control module programming could cause a gradual throttle increase without driver input, which could cause vehicle speed to increase. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will update vehicle software. Note: Applying the brake would allow the vehicle to be slowed or stopped.

Recall 2014414 419 units in Canada

Powertrain

On certain hybrid models, an error in communication between the electric motor inverter and the transmission control module could cause the electric motor to stop functioning when the vehicle is operated in electric-only mode, causing a loss of motive power and illuminating the warning lamp. This could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will update vehicle software.

Recall 2014093 60,022 units in Canada

Recall 2013410 3 units in Canada

Steering

On certain vehicles equipped with Direct Adaptive Steering (steer-by-wire), cold weather operation could cause the system to malfunction on startup, and delay the engagement of the mechanical backup system. This would result in a loss of steering, which would increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the Direct Adaptive Steering module.

After leaving the dealer I had my vehicle inspected the next day by a third party repair shop and my brake caliper was missing the main bolt that connects to the brake pad. The contact owns a 2014 Infiniti Q50. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the message "No Key Detected" was displayed. The contact waved the key fob around the START/STOP button, and the message ceased. The contact stated that the light around the START/STOP button was orange, but was green before the failure. One day, while driving the vehicle, the engine failed to shut off after shifting into park(P) and pressing the START/STOP button. The contact made several attempts to turn off the vehicle. The message to "Visit the Dealer" was displayed. The vehicle was taken to several independent mechanics before finding a mechanic who was able to turn off the vehicle by removing the starter fuse. The mechanic advised the contact to tow the vehicle to the dealer. The dealer performed a water test and discovered that there was a leak in the sunroof, which had caused the failure. The mechanic discovered that water had leaked through the firewall in the body control module (BCM), causing the failure. The contact was provided with an estimate, and the vehicle was repaired. The contact stated that after the repair, while the vehicle was idling, the vehicle intermittently jerked. There was no warning light illuminated. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

Went to dealership they told me I need a new transmission due to valve body that they don’t sell by itself. This is the second time a replacement was done and it happened
