Recalls on the 2004 Jaguar XJ

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2009119 564 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles, the brake pipes to the rear wheels could corrode prematurely. The resultant brake fluid leakage would cause extended stopping distances which could result in a vehicle crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will remove and discard the noise vibration and harshness pad fitted to the under tray. As well, the rear underfloor and rear cross member brake pipes will be inspected and, if necessary, replaced.

Recall 2004119 45 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, the passenger airbag trim components have a poor aperture edge. Should the airbag deploy, it could be ruptured, increasing the risk of injury to the seat occupant. Correction: Dealer will inspect the passenger airbag aperture and, where necessary, remove any sharp serrated edges.

Recall 2004040 1,309 units in Canada

Powertrain

On certain vehicles equipped with automatic transmissions, with the forward drive gear selected and the vehicle stationary or in a forward motion, the gearbox could potentially select reverse gear, without indication to the driver. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the transmission control module.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

The contact owns a 2004 Jaguar XJ. The contact stated that while depressing the brake pedal, the brake pedal felt spongy and an excessive amount of force was needed to depress the brake pedal. The brake pedal almost went to the floorboard before the vehicle came to a stop, causing the braking distance to be extended. The message that the brake fluid level was low remained illuminated. There was brake fluid leaking from a fractured cross-member brake pipe. The vehicle was taken to a certified mechanic, who found that the underfloor tray was corroded, causing the floor to fracture. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure was associated with NHTSA Campaign Number: 09V144000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the VIN was not included. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 128,000.

I WAS HAVING A PROBLEM WITH LEAKING BRAKE FLUID AND A FRIEND WITH THE SAME YEAR AND MODEL CAR TOLD ME ABOUT A RECALL ON THEIR CAR FOR THE SAME PROBLEM . THIS PROBLEM IS CAUSED BY PADDING INSTALLED FOR SOUND PROOFING ON THE UNDERSIDE OF THE VEHICLE WHICH TRAPS DIRT AND MOISTURE AND CAUSES THE BRAKE LINES TO PREMATURELY RUST WHICH I HAVE AN ISSUE WITH. AFTER HAVING THE PANELS REMOVED FOR INSPECTION IT WAS CONFIRMED THAT THE PADS ARE INSTALL ON THIS PARTICULAR VEHICLE AND THE RUST ISSUE IS PRESENT AS WELL . WHEN I ENTERED MY VIN NUMBER INTO YOUR SYSTEM IT'S TELLING ME THERE ARE NO OPEN OR IN REPAIRED RECALLED ON MY CAR HOW COULD THAT BE?

SUSPENSION

MADE A 500 MILE ROAD WHEN THE AIR SUSPENSION FAULT MESSAGE CAME ON ( YELLOW LIGHT), BUT THAT HAD HAPPENED PERIODICALLY AND SEEMED TO BE A COMPUTER FAULT. THE CAR RAN FINE. THEN AFTER A 2 DAY PERIOD OF NO USE, WHEN THE CAR WAS STARTED A RED WARNING LIGHT CAME INDICATING VEHICLE TOO LOW AND ON OUTSIDE INSPECTION THE CAR WAS TOO CLOSE TO THE TIRES. IN 2010, BOTH SUSPENSION STRUTS WERE REPLACED.

UNINTENDED ACCELERATION WHEN BRAKING. DESCRIPTION OF INCIDENT AUGUST 5, 2010 I DID NOT DRIVE THE CAR, IT WAS PARKED IN FRONT OF MY APARTMENT. AUGUST 6, 2010 AT 12:15PM I DROVE FROM MY APARTMENT TO THE PEBBLE BEACH LODGE PARKING LOT (APPROX. 5 MILES AND 10 MINUTES). AT 4:15PM AND AFTER A LONG LUNCH AT THE LODGE I DROVE MILE TO MY BANK PARKING LOT NEAR THE LODGE. I WENT TO THE BANK AND THE PEBBLE BEACH MARKET NEARBY. AT 5PM I DROVE HOME, I WAS DRIVING ON AN ASPHALT PAVED ROAD IN PEBBLE BEACH AT APPROXIMATELY 30 TO 35 MPH AND LIGHTLY APPLIED THE BRAKE (ONLY) AROUND A CURVE AND THE CAR LURCHED FORWARD (EG, VIGOROUSLY ACCELERATED). I TOOK MY FOOT OFF THE BRAKES, I WAS STARTLED AND LET THE CAR COAST FOR A FEW FEET, THERE WAS NO TRAFFIC ON PEBBLE BEACH DRIVE AT THAT TIME. I RESUMED THE DRIVE HOME, AND I WAS VERY MUCH ALERT AND AWARE AND VERY CAREFUL, I APPLIED THE BRAKES SEVERAL TIMES WITHOUT INCIDENT AND STOPPED AT TWO STOP SIGNS BEFORE I APPROACHED THE THIRD STOP SIGN APPROXIMATELY FIVE MINUTES LATER, AS I NEARED A 4 WAY STOP INTERSECTION, I SLOWLY I APPLIED THE BRAKES A NORMAL DISTANCE BEFORE THE INTERSECTION, BUT AS I WAS ATTEMPTING TO STOP THE CAR BEFORE THE INTERSECTION, THE CAR LURCH FORWARD AND I INSTANTLY PRESSED THE BRAKE PEDAL (ONLY, NOT THE GAS PEDAL) AND MOVED THE SHIFTER INTO THE PARK POSITION AND TURNED THE KEY OFF. I WAS ABOUT FIVE FEET FARTHER INTO THE INTERSECTION THAN I PLANNED. THE CAR ON MY LEFT DID NOT MOVE INTO THE INTERSECTION AS HE OBSERVED THE EVENT (AND GAVE ME HIS PHONE #), HE HEARD MY WHEELS SCREECH (FOR A SPLIT SECOND) AND MAYBE MY FRONT WHEELS MADE NOISE TOO, BUT I ONLY RECALL HEARING THE REAR WHEELS.

WHEELS

I BOUGHT A 2004 XJR JAGUAR. IT WAS NEW AND HAD DEALER ADDED CHROME WHEELS($3,000 ADDITIONAL COST). THE RIMS WERE DEFECTIVE AND I ASKED THE DEALER TO IDENTIFY THE SUPPLIER OF THE RIMS SO THAT I COULD CONTACT THE SUPPLIER DIRECTLY. THE DEALERSHIP SAYS IT DID NOT KEEP A RECORD OF WHERE IT PURCHASED THE WHEELS. I HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME BELIEVING THAT AN AUTOMOBILE COMPANY OR DEALERSHIP IS NOT REQUIRED TO KEEPS RECORDS REGARDING PARTS ON A VEHICLE, ESPECIALLY PARTS AS CRITICAL AS THE WHEELS. PLEASE ADVISE.
