When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

NHTSA investigations into the 1989 Jeep Wagoneer

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Recalls on the 1989 Jeep Wagoneer

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 1996179 5,991 units in Canada

Brakes

Vehicles with ABS brakes may experience premature actuator piston seal wear in the ABS hydraulic control unit and/or actuator pump motor deterioration. If this occurs, the abs function may be lost and reduced power assist may be experienced during vehicle braking. Correction: Vehicles with ABS malfunction will be repaired as necessary. Warranty on all abs components will be extended to 10 years or 160,000 km (except for the brake actuator piston assembly and the pump-motor assembly which will have lifetime coverage).

Emissions

NOTE: JEEP VEHICLES WITH 4.0 LITRE ENGINES, RENAULT VEHICLES WITH 2.0 LITRE ENGINES AND EAGLE PREMIER VEHICLES WITH 2.5 AND 3 LITRE ENGINES. THESE VEHICLES DO NOT COMPLY WITH C.M.V.S.S. 1103 - EXHAUST EMISSIONS. FAULTY OXYGEN SENSOR COULD LEAD TO POOR FUEL/AIR CONTROL AND REDUCED CATALYST EFFICIENCY WHICH MAY INCREASE TAILPIPE EMISSIONS. CORRECTION: OXYGEN SENSOR WILL BE REPLACED WITH ONE OF AN IMPROVED DESIGN.

Recall 1991007 4,033 units in Canada

Brakes

ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH THE ANTI-LOCK BRAKE SYSTEM (ABS), MATERIALS USED IN THE MANUFACTURE AND INSTALLATION OF THE ABS LOW PRESSURE HOSE MAY CONTAMINATE THE BRAKE FLUID IN TWO DIFFERENT WAYS AND IMPAIR THE PROPER FUNCTIONING OF THE ABS SYSTEM. ONE FORM OF CONTAMINATION COULD RESULT IN PLUGGING OF THE ABS BOOSTER PUMP FILTER RESULTING IN LOSS OF ABS FUNCTION. THE OTHER COULD CAUSE STRESS CORROSION FAILURE OF A MASTER CYLINDER SNAP RING RESULTING IN BRAKE DRAG. CORRECTION: ABS LOW PRESSURE HOSE WILL BE REPLACED WITH ONE HAVING A DIFFERENT MATERIAL AND THE MASTER CYLINDER WILL BE REBUILT WITH A NEW PISTON ASSEMBLY CONTAINING A THICKER SNAP RING.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

DT*: THE CONTACT STATED WHILE DRIVING 35 MPH ON NORMAL ROAD CONDITIONS, THE ABS LIGHT ILLUMINATED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO A CERTIFIED INDEPENDENT MECHANIC WHO DETERMINED THE ABS PUMP HAD NOT OUTPUT. THERE WAS A RECALL # 96V260000 PERTAINING TO THE ABS PROBLEM. THE MANUFACTURER DETERMINED THE RECALL WAS ALREADY PERFORMED ON THE VEHICLE. HOWEVER, THE CONTACT DID NOT BELIEVE THE MANUFACTURER STATEMENT WAS CORRECT. THE VEHICLE WAS PURCHASED IN 1995 AND THE LETTER WAS NEVER RECEIVED BY THE CONTACT. THE VEHICLE REMAINED AT THE MECHANIC SHOP BECAUSE THE VEHICLE WAS NOT SAFE TO OPERATE.

SEATS

DRIVER'S SIDE SEAT BROKE - ONLY 1/2 THE SIDE IS NOW ATTACHED, HAPPENED WHILE I WAS GETTING OUT OF VEHICLE. HAD I BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT, I'M SURE I WOULDN'T BE HERE NOW. DEALER WANTS $900 TO FIX. ACCORDING TO AUTO-PARTS STORE, IT'S COMMON FOR THE SEATS TO BREAK! IF THIS ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE I DON'T KNOW WHAT IS! ONE EXPECTS TO HAVE TO REPLACE CERTAIN PARTS ON A USED VEHICLE, BUT NOT A SEAT! THE PART THAT ANCHORS THE SEAT IN PLACE EITHER HAS A DESIGN FLAW, OR THE PARTS ARE STRESSED AND BREAK. I'M VERY CONCERNED ABOUT WHAT MAY HAVE HAPPENED TO OTHERS.
