Recalls on the 2018 Mercedes Benz Metris

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2026167 9,044 units in Canada

Tires

Issue: On certain vehicles, winter tires with the wrong load rating may have been installed. As a result, the tires may be overloaded. This could cause poor handling or a tire failure. Safety Risk: Poor handling or a tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the winter tires.

Recall 2022343 5,116 units in Canada

Label

Issue: On certain vehicles, the gross axle weight ratings (GAWR) are higher than the allowable maximum load for the tires. As a result, the tires could be overloaded. Driving a vehicle with tires that are overloaded could cause poor handling and/or a tire failure. Safety Risk: Poor handling or a tire failure could cause a loss of control and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the tire and loading information labels on the B-pillar and fuel filler door and provide you with an add-on for the owner's manual. The dealer will also inspect the tires and, if necessary, replace them.

Recall 2022103 5,418 units in Canada

Fuel System

Issue: On certain vehicles, the connections on the fuel supply hose may not be properly attached. As a result, fuel could leak in the engine compartment. Safety Risk: A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to check the upper and lower connections on the fuel transition hose. The dealer will replace the clamps and the fuel hose, if required.

Recall 2022085 3,701 units in Canada

Visual System

Issue: On certain vehicles, the rearview camera image could freeze while backing up. Safety Risk: A rearview camera that doesn't display correctly could reduce a driver's ability to see behind the vehicle while backing up. This could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to have the rearview camera replaced.

Recall 2019515 1,798 units in Canada

Electrical

Issue: Certain vans equipped with an integrated backup battery do not have a cover installed over the front passenger's seat base. As a result, if an object made of a conductive material is dropped into the opening, it could make contact with the battery terminals. This could result in a short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit could increase the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Mercedes-Benz will notify owners by mail and instruct them to take their vehicle to a dealer to install a cover over the front passenger's seat base. Consumers should not use a seat base with a battery as a storage compartment.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

TIRES

See attached document for complaint. I wanted to express my displeasure with the manner in which the above reference recall was conducted. The timeline left many owners with expensive replacement bills for new tires to replace inadequate tires that were installed as OEM on our vans. The message boards tell a story of frustration for a large group of consumers. As you know the recall was originally made in July of 2022. The notice to dealers went out in September of 2022. Mercedes Benz appeared to really drag their feet on a solution to the issue with the first small number of remedies (219 out of 24,359) in the second quarter of 2024. Remedies did not begin in earnest until the beginning of 2025 almost two and half years after the recall was originally published. As the original ti res were inadequate, I was notified in June of 2023 by your Mercedes-Benz of Pleasanton service center that my tires needed to be replaced at a cost of $1,348. Strange that a dealer would be trying to sell me replacement tires on an item under a recall. I decided in October of 2023 at an odometer reading of only 26,708 to go ahead and replace my tires having given up on your slow roll of the recall remedy. I spent $940 on new tires to replace the inadequate tires. Finally in January of 2025 you notified me that you were prepared to replace my tires if necessary. In April of 2025 at an odometer reading of 34,984 your Mercedes-Benz of Palm Springs service center replaced my "newish" tires with the right size tires. Based on message board activity I think there are many disappointed owners who had a similar experience as evidenced by their comments. I just can't believe a safety recall was left open with no remedy for so long at a great expense and waste. I would ask that you reimburse me for the wasted expenditure of $940 I made in October of 2023 while awaiting your delayed recall solution to make this situation right.

ENGINE

The check engine light came on, with code P052E indicating a positive crankcase ventilation valve failure. Dealer inspection revealed the PCV valve is sticking and recommended a replacement with a $2100 charge. This is a widely experienced problem with this engine in many Mercedes vehicles, suggesting that the cause is a manufacturer defect.

Overloading over time could cause excessive tire wear and in a worst case scenario, could lead to tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash. An authorized Mercedes-Benz Metris dealer will replace the tire information label on the B-pillar and fuel filler door. Dealers will also check the tires on the vehicle to verify that they are the correctly specified tires. If the tires on the vehicle are of a lower rating than what is specified in the Operators Manual, the tires will be replaced with new tires having the specified load rating. This repair will be done free of charge.

The digital display system that indicates how many miles you have left until empty is not accurate. The dashboard display indicated that I had about 85 miles of range left before my tank was empty. Approximately 35 miles later, when there should have been 50 miles of range left according to the digital dashboard display, the vehicle ran out of gas and I was left stranded on the side of the freeway. This is a safety issue. I have read numerous reports of similar incidents with this vehicle in online forums.
