NHTSA crash tests

The agency crash-tested this model year itself. These are its own photographs and star ratings.

These stars come from the pre-2011 crash test programme. NHTSA rebuilt the programme for the 2011 model year and states that ratings either side of that change are not comparable — so do not read these against a 2011-or-newer car's stars.

When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

NHTSA investigations into the 2009 Nissan Cube

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Driver Airbag Inflator Rupture

The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) became aware of a single-vehicle crash involving a 2009 Nissan Cube resulting in an airbag deployment. When the front-driver airbag deployed the airbag module detached from the steering wheel, striking the driver, and causing injuries requiring medical attention.A police report states that the driver’s airbag module was found in the back seat of the vehicle.Further inspection of the vehicle showed the airbag cushion and inflator remained secured to the module housing. The 2009 Nissan Cube vehicles are equipped with Takata PSDI-X inflators.Nissan has co...

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Recalls on the 2009 Nissan Cube

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2026184 5,496 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain vehicles, the driver-front airbag inflator may not have been properly welded. As a result, the airbag module could separate from the steering wheel when it deploys in a crash. Safety Risk: An airbag that does not work properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Action: Nissan will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the driver-front airbag inflator.

Recall 2010247 5,384 units in Canada

Fuel System

Certain vehicles may not meet the requirements of the Canada Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (CMVSS) 301 - Fuel System Integrity. After a rear impact crash test during a compliance testing program, the post crash fuel spillage exceeded the limit specified by the standard. Should fuel leakage occur and be in close proximity to an ignition source it could result in a fire. Correction: Dealers will install a protector to the gasoline recirculation tube at the filler neck connection.

Recall 2010235 779 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, the passenger-side curtain airbag may have been incorrectly positioned during vehicle assembly. As a result, in certain types of crashes where side curtain airbag deployment is expected, a portion of the bag may be restricted from fully deploying. The side curtain airbag will still deploy in a timely manner, meeting or exceeding applicable safety standards. Correction: Dealers will replace the side curtain airbag. This action is a Customer Satisfaction Campaign and is not being conducted as per the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Recall 2009283 18,358 units in Canada

Other

On certain vehicles, material in the nut used to secure the sensor-transmitter of the Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) may corrode and crack in areas with heavy concentrations of road salt. If this occurs, the nut may come out of the TPMS sensor-transmitter causing a rapid loss of tire air pressure. This could adversely affect vehicle control and cause a crash resulting in property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will replace the TPMS nut with a revised version.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

FAULTY TRANSMISSION, DISCOLORED, BROKEN. NEEDS TO EITHER BE REPAIRED OR REPLACED. AT 111,000 MILES MY CAR HAD TROUBLE STOPPING. I ALMOST GOT HIT IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INTERSECTION. HAVE REALLY BAD WHIPLASH AND CONTINUE TO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR EVERY 2 WEEKS. I HAVE TAKEN MY NISSAN CUBE 2009 111,000 MILES TO 3 MECHANICS. (NISSAN, MEINEKE AND PISMO AUTOMOTIVE) HAVE DOCUMENTATION AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. INCLUDING NISSAN WHEN THEY SAID THAT IT WOULD BE $260 TO DIAGNOSE I WENT TO 2 OTHER MECHANICS SHORTLY AFTER) OF WHICH, I COULDN'T GET A CLEAR ANSWER AS TO WHICH WAS GOING ON WITH MY ENGINE. THE TRANSMISSION CVT WHICH I NOW KNOW IT IS, BECAUSE OF YOUR WEBSITE, IT WAS MAKING ALL KINDS OF WEIRD NOISES (ENGINE REVVING). JERKING TRANSMISSION, SHIFTING (SLAMMING AND HARSH WHILE BRAKING) HAVE TRANSMISSION LEAKS REPORTED AND REPORTED THAT CVT WAS NOT ONLY LEAKING, BUT BLACKENED IN COLOR. (SAW IT YESTERDAY WHILE MECHANIC SHOWED ME INSIDE OF ENGINE AND CVT. WHEN I PRESS ON GAS PEDAL IT WOULD DROP OUT OF POWER AND HESITATES ON ACCELERATION. TAKING THE LEMON TO NISSAN AGAIN. IT'S CURRENTLY AT PISMO AUTOMOTIVE, AS SOON AS MECHANIC PUTS THE ENGINE BACK TOGETHER I WILL BE TOWING MY CAR (NISSAN SAID I HAD TO TOW IT TO THEM) BUT EVEN THEN, GETTING THE RUN AROUND FROM NISSAN SAYING I HAVE TO PAY BUT IT WILL BE COVERED. *DT CONSUMER STATED BRAKES DID NOT FULLY STOP. 2009 Cube would not start. Steering wheel locked prevented me from starting the car. Called AAA and they tried to jump start and still would not start. AAA towed my car to Capital Nissan in San Jose and they confirmed it was the Steering Lock Unit. Replaced and charged me 1363.46. After researching online there was a recall (not my Cube and I don't know why) back in 2011. I also found that "recalls never expired". I feel because this incident happened at a later time the Steering Lock Unit became defective. I've noticed the warning light on my dashboard for awhile but it was off and on and have been taking my car for maintenance over the years at Premier Nissan (now called Capitol Nissan in San Jose) and thought maybe the tech would find the problem. I feel because it was defective and recalled I shouldn't have to pay for parts and labor. Also on my Invoice they wrote down the mileage as 140000 and that is not true. My Cube has 138000.

MY 2009 NISSAN CUBE HAD A RECALL FOR THE MANUFACTURING DEFECTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE ELECTRICAL STEERING COLUMN LOCK (ESCL). IT WENT OUT IN JANUARY 2020 AND THE NISSAN DEALER WANTS 832.00 TO REPAIR WHAT IS A NISSAN MANUFACTURING DEFECT. INVESTIGATING THIS IT WAS FOUND THAT IN JANUARY 2012, JUST BEFORE THE CAR WAS PURCHASED FROM THE NISSAN DEALER, THE ESCL RECALL WAS FIXED AT THE MURFREESBORO DEALERSHIP. AS I WASNT THE OWNER AT THE TIME I DO NOT HAVE PAPERWORK TO SHOW THIS, ONLY THE WORD FROM THE DEALER. THE ESCL IS OBVIOUSLY STILL A PROBLEM BUT THE DEALERSHIP SAID SINCE IT WAS FIXED ONCE THAT MET THE RECALL CRITERIA AND I HAVE TO PAY FOR THE MANUFACTURERS DEFECTIVE ESCL. THE RED LIGHT WITH THE KEY CAME ON WHEN IT WAS PARKED AT A STORE AND WOULDN'T MOVE SO IT WAS TOWED TO THE NISSAN DEALER. THEY HAVE STATED THE PART IS 579.93 AND THE LABOR WILL BE 312.50. NISSAN CONSUMER HOTLINE WAS CONTACTED AND THEY SAID THAT IT WAS REPAIRED BUT WOULDN'T GIVE ME A DATE/PLACE SO I CALLED THE DEALERSHIP I BOUGHT IT FROM TO GET THIS INFORMATION. THEY ARE THE ONES WHO STATED IT WAS DONE IN JANUARY 2012 WHEN IT WAS IN THEIR POSSESSION TO SELL ON THE LOT. SINCE IT IS A DOCUMENTED MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY AND THE DEALERSHIP SUPPOSEDLY DID THE WORK WHILE THE CAR WAS FOR SALE ON THEIR LOT (MEANING WE HAVE TO TRUST THEY ACTUALLY DID THE EXPENSIVE REPAIR), WHEN THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS WHY IS IT NOT BEING COVERED? THIS IS A WELL DOCUMENTED PROBLEM THROUGHOUT THE INTERNET OF NISSAN 2009 CUBE OWNERS WHO TO THIS DAY ARE HAVING PROBLEMS WITH THE ESCL AND THE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE REPAIR BILLS THAT GO WITH IT.
