NHTSA investigations into the 2024 Vinfast VF 8
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

On September 10, 2024, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened Preliminary Evaluation (PE) 24025 to assess allegations of lane departures with the Lane Keep Assist (LKA) system engaged in Model Year (MY) 2023 through 2024 VinFast VF8 vehicles. The reports further alleged that the system exhibited difficulty detecting lanes on the roadway and, under certain conditions, provided improper steering inputs that resulted in an inconsistent control effort required by the driver, potentially elevating the risk of a crash or injury. To date, ODI has received a total of 17 related Vehicle Owner...
Recalls on the 2024 Vinfast VF 8
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

LANE DEPARTURE: LANE KEEP: AUTOMATIC STEERING
VinFast Auto, LLC (VinFast) is recalling certain 2023-2025 VF8 vehicles. The Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS) may activate during wide turns, causing unexpected steering wheel movements that are difficult for the driver to override.
Risk: A steering wheel that moves unexpectedly may increase the risk of a crash.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 2026038639 units in Canada
Electrical
Issue: On certain vehicles, a software problem could cause the electronic parking pawl (EPP) to be released on its own. Additionally, the electronic parking brake (EPB) wiring harness could become damaged and/or corroded. If both issues happen at the same time, the vehicle could roll away when it's parked. Safety Risk: A parked vehicle that rolls away could create the risk of an injury or a crash. Corrective Actions: To reduce the safety risk, VinFast recommends parking the vehicle on a flat surface until the recall repairs have been completed. VinFast will notify owners by email and advise you to take your vehicle to a VinFast authorized service center to update the vehicle software. The service center will also inspect and repair or replace the EPB wiring harness, as necessary.
Recall 20255173,057 units in Canada
Other
Issue: Under certain conditions, the lane keeping assist (LKA) feature of the advanced driver assistance system (ADAS) may not work properly. As a result, the steering wheel could move unexpectedly and/or the steering wheel movements may be difficult to override. Safety Risk: An advanced driver assistance system that doesn't work properly could increase the risk of a crash if the driver doesn't intervene. Corrective Actions: VinFast reminds that LKA is only an ADAS feature, and that the driver must pay attention and be ready to take control at all times when the feature is engaged. VinFast will notify owners by email and advise you to take your vehicle to a VinFast authorized service center to update the ADAS software.
Recall 20250062,440 units in Canada
Airbag
Issue: On certain vehicles, the center airbag in the driver's seat may not deploy properly in certain collisions. Safety Risk: An airbag that doesn't work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: VinFast will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the center airbag in the driver's seat.
Recall 2024293155 units in Canada
Airbag
Issue: On certain vehicles, the wrong airbags may have been installed during production. As a result, the airbags would not inflate in a crash. Note: This issue doesn't affect the driver-front airbag. Safety Risk: An airbag that doesn't work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: VinFast will notify owners in writing and advise you to take your vehicle to a VinFast service center to replace the airbags, as necessary.

The contact leased a 2024 VINFAST VF 8. The contact stated that upon pulling into the driveway with the rear wheels of the vehicle on the side of the roadway, the brake pedal was depressed, but the vehicle unintendedly accelerated. The driver swerved and avoided the residence, and the vehicle crashed into a flowerpot. The vehicle then accelerated 70-80 ft. on the sidewalk, passed several residences, and the vehicle stopped. The air bags did not deploy. There was no injury sustained. No police report was filed. Additionally, the contact stated that while her sister was attempting to park downhill, the vehicle unintendedly accelerated temporarily and responded as needed. The contact also stated that while driving on the Golden Gate Bridge at an undisclosed speed and approaching a toll, the contact decelerated to 25 MPH, but the vehicle suddenly accelerated, and the passenger's side of the vehicle struck the guardrail. There were no warning lights illuminated. The air bags did not deploy. There was no injury sustained. No police report was filed. No further information was available. The contact stated that she was concerned for her safety because the vehicle was unsafe to drive. The local dealer was not contacted because the dealer had closed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failures and referred the contact to the auto finance company for assistance. Vehicle did not slow down when in assistant driving mode. The vehicle was coming up on an intersection with a stoplight with two cars ahead of it. I had to apply breaks manually with the failure of the system slowing down fast enough. When I manually applied the brakes I pressed them hard after disengaging the driving assistant the car did not send any notifications following disengagement. The automatic emergency braking system also was not activated given that the vehicle had at minimum a cars length distance to stop. I did not receive an alert for the forward collision warning system even before applying brakes. I rear ended another car without any nonfictions to the car making impact as well. I commute on this road often as it is on the way to my job so I am familiar with the lights and intersections but was going further than usual which is why I decided to engage driving assistant.

POWER TRAIN
We have two VinFast VF8 vehicles, one with the VIN [XXX] (VF8 Black) and one with the VIN [XXX] (VF8 White). Both vehicles experienced the same problem with the electric power train at different times. The issue manifests itself as follows: The vehicle suddenly displays a "drive train malfunction error" on the center display, it then jerks a couple of times, loses all power, and stops. After that, it is not possible to put the transmission back into drive or reverse, only neutral or park. VF8 Black experienced this problem first on [XXX]. We contacted VinFast and asked for the vehicle to be serviced under warranty. VinFast picked up the car on 3/17/2025 and took it to their service center in Irvine, CA. There is no VinFast service center in San Diego, CA, were we live. VinFast returned the vehicle on 3/25/2025. The repair report stated "Technician road test with the same conditions as the customer was unable to duplicate. Technician also verified the cause with the engineering team which have told me that the issue would be resolved in a future update. Vehicle drives as designed with no issues." Apparently the issue was known to the VinFast engineering team. Then on [XXX] VF8 White experienced the same problem. We contacted VinFast who picked up the vehicle on 6/3/2025. On 7/13/2025 I asked VinFast for an update as we had not heard anything. Finally, the responded saying that they are waiting for a part. On 7/27/2025 I received an that the repair was completed. The repair report states that a software update was done to fix the issue. I have not received the vehicle back. VinFast won't return the car to us. They now ask us to pick it up or have it delivered at our expense. We are concerned that the issue is still not resolved and that the vehicles are unsafe to drive, in particular on freeways where a sudden stop can create hazardous conditions with severe consequences. The forward collision warning keeps faulting. The software sends incorrect errors and shuts off some of the safety features when doing so. The steering wheel is stuck in the 'exit' position, meaning it's retracted and in the highest position, making it difficult to maneuver. Various alarms randomly sound for no reason. The car has had multiple software updates and the problems remain persistent.

The left turn signal fails to activate when pressing down on the turn signal lever. Happens intermittently. Vinfast repair center says they can not duplicate the problem. Online forums report this is a widespread problem which Vinfast does not know how to repair. This is a major safety concern because when you press down on the lever you assume your turn signal is on and therefore you change lanes. But many times I'm changing lanes and the signal is not on. Therefore it could cause a collision with another vehicle.

The advanced driver assistance systems , specifically lane departure and emergency steering control system engaged with out warning and caused forced automated steering control. The car swerved rapidly right and left in the lane causing violent body roll and loss of control of the vehicle. Attempts to manually control the steering only made the issue worse . The adas system just added more force . Emergency braking was required to disconnect the assisted steering . The steering control is turned on by default on each start up of the car. So it's active each time the car is driven . Conditions were dry road , two lanes , one direction each way .line markings only in center of road , none on outer edge s.
