While driving downhill and using regenerative braking, my 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid suddenly experienced a hybrid system malfunction. Immediately after the event, the vehicle displayed "Check IMA System" and "Check Charging System" warnings and began exhibiting drivability and electrical-system problems. Following the failure, the vehicle experienced reduced acceleration from a stop, rough engine restarts, loss of auto-stop functionality, charging-system issues, intermittent low-voltage behavior, and eventual no-start/jump-start conditions. The vehicle was inspected and diagnosed by an authorized Acura dealership. Diagnostic testing identified fault codes P0A78 (Motor Power Inverter Internal Circuit Malfunction), P1440 (Motor Power Inverter Module Output Circuit Malfunction), and P1437 (Motor Power Inverter Module Short Circuit). The dealership determined that the Motor Power Inverter had failed and required replacement. The failure affected vehicle propulsion, charging-system operation, and regenerative braking operation. Reduced acceleration and unexpected hybrid-system malfunction while driving created concerns regarding vehicle safety and reliability during normal operation. The Motor Power Inverter was replaced by an Acura dealership and the warning messages, drivability concerns, and related symptoms were resolved. I am submitting this complaint to document a confirmed Motor Power Inverter failure involving a 2013 Acura ILX Hybrid.

I own a 2016 Acura ILX and recently discovered multiple federally mandated safety recalls affecting my vehicle, including a brake master cylinder recall, fuel pump recall, driveshaft separation recall, and Takata airbag recall. I have owned this vehicle for over seven years and was never notified by mail or otherwise at my correct address that these safety recalls existed. One recall is currently active, but the dealership advised they cannot perform the repair due to parts unavailability until March, leaving me to operate a vehicle with a known brake-related safety defect. The remaining recalls are listed as not active, yet were never completed, and the dealer refused to perform them. I am concerned that required safety defects were not properly communicated or remedied, placing me and others at risk.

The vehicle began experiencing a steering and suspension malfunction that made the car difficult to control, particularly at low speeds and when turning. There was increased vibration, unusual noise from the front end, and a noticeable pull to one side. These symptoms created a safety risk because loss of steering stability could have led to a crash, especially in traffic or on highways. The vehicle was taken to a Honda dealership for diagnosis. The dealership did not inform me of an active Acura safety recall related to the issue and stated that they “do not check Acura recalls.” Based on their assessment, I proceeded with repairs at my own expense. I paid approximately $435 for the replacement part purchased from an Acura dealership and about $300 in labor to an independent repair shop. After the work was completed, I later learned that the same issue was covered under an active Acura safety recall. The problem has since been confirmed by both the independent repair facility that performed the work and an Acura dealership that verified the recall applies to this vehicle. When I requested reimbursement under the recall, Acura offered approximately $312.91, which does not cover my actual repair costs. Prior to the failure, there were clear warning signs including steering vibration, noise, and handling instability that worsened over time. No dashboard warning lights appeared before the failure. To Whom It May Concern: I am writing to express my serious concerns regarding the safety recall (NHTSA Recall No. 21V-215) for the fuel pump on my 2019 Acura ILX, VIN [XXX] . While I appreciate that American Honda has issued this recall, I am deeply troubled by the lack of available replacement parts and the company's decision to prioritize repairs only for vehicles currently experiencing symptoms. This approach fails to adequately address the safety risks for all affected vehicles and owners. The recall notice clearly states that the defective fuel pump impeller can deform over time, potentially causing the engine to stall while driving and increasing the risk of a crash. By delaying repairs for vehicles not yet exhibiting symptoms, American Honda is placing owners like myself at unnecessary risk of experiencing a dangerous malfunction while operating our vehicles. I have contacted several Acura dealerships, all of which have confirmed they have limited or no parts available to complete this critical safety repair. This situation is unacceptable given the serious nature of the defect and the potential consequences of a fuel pump failure. I urge American Honda to take immediate action to: 1.Accelerate production and distribution of replacement fuel pump modules to all authorized Acura dealers. 2.Offer loaner vehicles or alternative transportation to all affected owners until repairs can be completed. 3.Provide a firm timeline for when all affected vehicles will be able to receive the recall repair. 4.Consider expanding reimbursement eligibility to cover preventative repairs owners may pursue given the delays. American Honda has a responsibility to promptly remedy this safety defect for all affected vehicles, not just those currently exhibiting symptoms. Failure to do so in a timely manner may expose the company to increased liability and potential legal action.
