NHTSA investigations into the 2006 Chrysler Pacifica

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

SOMEONE DRIVING IN THE LANE NEXT TO ME BEGAN FRANTICALLY POINTING AT THE ENGINE OF MY CAR. IMMEDIATELY I SAW SMOKE AND FLAMES COMING FROM UNDERNEATH THE CAR'S HOOD. I PULLED OFF THE EXIT THAT I WAS APPROACHING, PARKED THE CAR AT THE CURB, JUMPED OUT THE CAR, DIALED 911. FIRE DEPARTMENT RESPONDED IN A COUPLE OF MINUTES AND BY THIS TIME ENTIRE ENGINE AND HOOD WAS ON FIRE.THEY PUT THE FIRE OUT. CAR WAS NOT ABLE TO BE PLACED IN NEUTRAL OR ANY OTHER GEAR, BUT WAS STILL TOWED TO THE DEALERSHIP THAT PERFORMED REPAIRS TO FUEL INJECTORS AND OTHER COMPONENTS OF THE ENGINE ON FEBRUARY 2, 2016. Bought car from a private seller and wasn't informed of MASSIVE and UNSAFE DAMAGE TO ENGINE CRADLE. The engine cradle is nearly completely rotted out. Don't know if rust has eroded other parts until a mechanic can look extensively at the engine cradle. I have been trying salvage yards and 9 out of the 10 Pacifica's I have inquired about the engine cradle is rotted beyond repair. It has to be replaced. The fee for replacing and labor is going to be anywhere from $400 to $2500. and the vehicle has only 153÷k on it. This is a huge and reoccurring issue with the Chrysler Pacifica after I did research.

POWER TRAIN

I got in the car started it as usual, shifted it in (D), pulled out of my church parking lot, got about 5 miles away from my church stopped at a red light. The light turned green I accelerated as usual. At this light is a slight incline about 15% ways up the incline it just stopped pulling. I pressed the gas heat the engine Rev but no power to the wheels. So I shifted it in auto stick mode and it wouldn’t change out of second gear I left it on the highway for about 3 days.I went back trying to reset the trans by turning the switch on and holding the gas pedal for 30sec as seen in Chryslers forum and YouTube yet still no power had the car towed back to Alabama when I go to church in Tennessee which was about 50 miles away or so. Get it home after paying a huge towing bill. Because my insurance only covered like 15miles. I got it home try to shift it in R, D, and The Autostick. however, it finally started going back to 1st gear. Unfortunately it still wouldn’t pull. I’ve looked up the problem and there is a recall for this, However when I call Chrysler it doesn’t cover my vehicle

STRUCTURE:BODY

A few weeks ago we took our car to a mechanic to have the brakes worked on as a part of routine maintenance. When we picked it up, he noted that when he had it up on the lift, he saw that the engine cradle was very badly rusted. He said that we shouldn't drive it anymore because of the risks involved. I tried to crawl under the car when we got home (there isn't a ton of clearance) but I saw what he was talking about. At that point we looked online and found hundreds and hundreds of similar experiences and complaints. We were left dumbfounded at the risks this introduces...thinking about what would happen if this mechanic hadn't noticed the issue and we'd been driving down the interstate with our kids when the thing decided to give way. And the fact that the manufacturer knows of this issue and has done nothing is beyond disgusting. Fortunately we found out from the mechanic, not from the engine falling out. Even still, this means that we're left with a worthless car. While our car is abandoned in the driveway hoping for Chrysler to right their wrong, we still see lots of similar vehicles on the road. I'm guessing that their owners don't know that they're driving death traps either. We had a 2008 Tacoma with similar frame rust issues and Toyota recalled it almost a decade after it was manufactured, and replaced the entire frame. Chrysler should have to do the same to repair their shoddy and negligent design, or at least compensate us for the complete loss of value so that we can have some money to put towards its replacement. I also think that this issue needs to be publicly noted for all similar model years. We'd purchased this from a Chrysler dealership, and had checked the Carfax and Consumer Reports before purchasing this vehicle, and none of them noted these issues even though the vehicle was a few years old at the time. Vehicle has been repaired.

WHEELS

I went on some errands before going out if town. I noticed I might need a wheel alignment soon and I parked the car in my garage to go out of town. When I returned to go have it checked out, I noticed my front driver side tire was flat and a closer inspection, it had a tear. Then I noticed my other front tire was flat as well. I had two people tell me my subframe was badly rusted. I found out this was a known problem with Chrysler Pacifica but no recalls. This could have been a horrible accident for my daughter and I. We had been on the highway! By the grace of GOD we made it home, but the car is not driveable. Then came COVID and here I am, still without a car. Chrysler said they don't do recalls. This should not happen. Unfortunately, I don't know how long this was going on, no one mentioned anything at oil changes or when I got 3 new tires, etc. I don't have photos and just lost and frustrated this happened.

RESEARCHED 100'S POSSIBLY 1000'S OF COMPLAINTS ONLINE WITH THE SAME ISSUE, WHERE WAS MENTIONED NOTHING WAS DONE ABOUT IT. CONTACTED CHRYSLER MYSELF TO PUT IN COMPLAINT AND AGENT WOULD NOT EVEN FORWARD IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL BECAUSE THE LACK OF RECALL OR EXTENDED WARRANTY. THE COST FOR A NEW FRAME FROM A CHRYSLER DEALER IS OVER 2K AND COST JUST AS MUCH TO REPLACE. BUT THE PART IS ON BACK ORDER FOR WEEKS. (COULD THIS MEAN THERE ARE SO MANY PEOPLE IN LINE WAITING TO ORDER AND NEEDING THIS PARTICULAR PART?) CANNOT TRUST USED PARTS BECAUSE OF MANY CHRYSLER PACIFICA OWNERS HAD TO SALVAGE THEIR VEHICLE FOR THE SAME REASON. MORE OF AN INVESTIGATION SHOULD BE DONE INTO THIS. IN THE MIDST OF A PANDEMIC WHO CAN AFFORD THESE OUTRAGEOUS, UNEXPECTED REPAIR COSTS OR EVEN A NEW VEHICLE. MY ONLY OPTION IS TO SALVAGE IT FOR WAY LESS THAT IT'S WORTH, AS I MENTIONED IT DRIVE GREAT! I CANNOT SELL IT TO ANYONE ELSE KNOWING THE SAFETY HAZARD IT HAS ON IT AND I CANNOT AFFORD A CAR PAYMENT. I AM FEARFUL OF MY ENGINE FALLING OUT OF THE BOTTOM IF I DRIVE IT. SOMETHING HAS TO BE DONE, TOO MANY VEHICLES WITH THE SAME ISSUE. FORCE A RECALL ON CHRYSLER FOR THEIR ROTTED SUBFRAMES.

NOTICED A LOT OF CLUNKING COMING FROM THE FRONT OF OUR 2006 PACIFICA. LOOKED UNDER VEHICLE AND NOTICED RUST AND HOLES IN THE ENGINE CRADLE. TOOK TO MY MECHANIC, HE CONFIRMED THE ENGINE CRADLE IS ABOUT TO FAIL. I CONTACTED BURGER CHRYSLER IN TERRE HAUTE IN. THEY STATED VEHICLE IS NOT UNDER ANY RECALL OR SAFETY NOTICE. AND FIXING IT WOULD BE OUT OF MY POCKET. I RESEARCHED THE VEHICLE ON THE NHTSA WEB SITE. NEED LESS TO SAY I'M ASHAMED TO OWN ONE. CHRYSLER WILL NOT STAND BEHIND WHAT THEY MESS UP.

I BOUGHT THIS VEHICLE UNDER THE IMPRESSION IT NEEDED A MOTOR MOUNT TO FIND OUT THAT THE SUB FRAME IS ROTTEN TO THE POINT IT'S A SAFETY ISSUE TO DRIVE. THE REST OF THE DETAILS MAY NOT BE OF INTEREST TO YOU BUT I AM THE SURVIVING SPOUSE OF A DECEASED VETERAN AND MOTHER OF HIS TWO CHILDREN. I'VE BEEN STRUGGLING TO RECUPERATE SINCE THEIR FATHER'S DEATH AND HEAVEN UNABLE TO DO TO THE PANDEMIC THAT'S WHAT I WAS ABOUT TO MY DAILY DRIVERS ENGINE SEIZED AND I EXHAUSTED ALL MY RESOURCES BUYING THIS VEHICLE THAT IS NOW DEEMED UNSAFE ANY HELP YOU CAN GIVE ME WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED
