NHTSA investigations into the 2015 Freightliner Cascadia
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

On February 26, 2016, Bergstrom Inc. notified NHTSA of a safety defect in approximately 10,819 of its ParkSmart auxiliary electrical temperature management units. These units were installed on Freightliner Cascadia Class 8 trucks that may overheat due to high resistance, resulting in possible fires. One of the contributing factors which led to this recall was a plastic vented cap covering the compressor connectors allowing increased flow of air to the overheated connectors, which increased the risk of a fire.ParkSmart units equipped with non-vented caps, according to Bergstrom, were not affect...
On April 3, 2017, the Office of Defects investigation (ODI) opened Engineering Analysis (EA17-001) as an upgrade to a Preliminary Analysis (PE16-005). The investigation focused on alleged windshield wiper failures on 2015-2016 MY Freightliner Cascadia trucks. Recalls on the 2015 Freightliner Cascadia
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 2020158873 units in Canada
Lights And Instruments
Issue: On certain trucks equipped with "Fleet Engineer" mud flaps, the bracket for the mud flaps may partially cover the rear reflective tape. Canadian regulations require that reflective tape must be visible on the rear of the truck. Safety Risk: Reflective tape that is covered may make the truck less visible to others and could create an increased risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Daimler Trucks of North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to an authorized DTNA Service Facility to inspect the reflective tape. It will be moved as necessary to meet the regulations.
Recall 201839532 units in Canada
Suspension
On certain trucks, a combination of brake vibrations and corrosion could cause the tie-rod tube to fatigue and break. This may lead to a disconnect between the front wheels and reduce the ability to steer the vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks of North America Service Facilities will replace brake linings, brake spiders and tie rods as necessary.
Recall 201758341,763 units in Canada
Brakes
On certain vehicles with air brakes, after several hard brake applications, the brake light pressure switch may not activate the brake lights with a light application of the brake pedal. If the brake lights do not illuminate, following road users would be unaware of the intent of the driver to slow the vehicle, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Daimler Trucks North America authorized service facilities will repair the brake light pressure switch.
Recall 2016419149 units in Canada
Wheels
On certain vehicles, the specified front axle weight limit may be greater than the hub capacity. If the axle load exceeds the maximum weight capacity of the hub, there is an increased risk of hub fatigue, which could cause a complete separation of the wheel(s) and a loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will replace the incorrectly specified front axle hubs.
Recall 20161131,282 units in Canada
Heater And Defroster
On certain vehicles equipped with Bergstrom Parksmart HVAC units, there maybe be inadequate electrical contact within the connector at the top of the compressor. This could cause an increased resistance in the circuit resulting in localized heating, which would increase the risk of fire causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will remove the open style design connector cap and replace it with an improved closed design cap, and will also inspect the compressor connector terminal for any signs of heat discolouration and replace the harness if discolouration is found.
Recall 2014548714 units in Canada
Brakes
On certain vehicles, brake chamber diaphragm(s) may not be properly seated. This could lead to brake drag, causing brake overheating or unintended spring brake application. These issues could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will affect repairs as necessary.
Recall 20144249 units in Canada
Electrical
On certain vehicles outfitted with 1100W, 1500W & 2000W Thermo King inverters, the inverter could fail. This would be apparent through a "popping" noise and/or an odor emanating from the unit, and could result in an electrical short, smoke, and/or fire, which could increase the risk of injury and/or damage to property. Correction: An authorized service facility will replace the inverter installed, or refund the full purchase price based on availability of replacement inverters.

Hello I am reaching out to you today to discuss a common issue with 2015 Freightliner cascadia the acu harness is located on the frame of the chassis and is grounding out wires to the mcm causing the truck to shut off in the middle of the road, highway or interstate, when the issue starts it doesn’t give you time to get off the highway to a safe place. I have personally reached out to several dealers and they are aware of this common issue spn 1231 fmi 9. Also I have called Freightliner about this issue and they are aware but haven’t yet taking action. I wouldn’t be writing you this if I didn’t experience this for a second time in a row, just yesterday I was towed off the interstate the Middle of an interstate. I will leave my contact information just incase you need more details thank you for your time. [XXX] [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

VISIBILITY/WIPER
WIPER RESERVOIR BECOMES HEATED DUE TO DPF SYSTEM WHICH CREATES PRESSURE WITHIN THE SYSTEM. AS A RESULT IT FORCES WIPER FLUID FROM THE NOZZLES DRAINING THE SYSTEM MOST TIMES UNDETECTED. RESULTING IN THE INABILITY TO CLEAN THE WINDOW WHEN IT BECOMES FOULED. DUE TO THE RESERVOIR BOTTLES LOCATION YOU CANNOT OBSERVE THE FLUID LEVEL THIS IS ALSO HINDERED DUE TO THE PLASTIC BECOMING STAINED BLUE BY THE WIPER FLUID OVER TIME. THERE IS ALSO NO INDICATOR THAT WIPER FLUID LEVEL IS LOW FROM WITHIN THE CAB. THIS OCCURS BOTH WHEN THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION OR STOPPED WHEN THE VEHICLE PERFORMS A "REGENERATION" OF THE DPF SYSTEM.

SERVICE BRAKES
BRAKE PRESSURE SWITCH DEFECTIVE: UNDER NORMAL DRIVING CONDITIONS, THE BRAKE LIGHTS WILL NOT ACTIVATE TO WARN FOLLOWING MOTORISTS. THE BRAKE LIGHTS ONLY WORK ON A HEAVY PEDAL APPLICATION. THE SECOND ISSUE IS THE CRUISE CAN BE SET AT HIGHWAY SPEED AND APPLYING THE BRAKES WILL NOT DEACTIVATE THE CRUISE. THE BRAKES ARE FIGHTING THE ENGINE UNTIL THE DRIVER TURNS OFF THE CRUISE AT THE SWITCH. AN INSPECTION INVOLVES PULLING DOWN THE INDEPENDENT CONTROL LEVER ON THE DASH FOR THE BRAKES WHICH IS THE SAME AS A HEAVY BRAKE APPLICATION AND THEN WALKING AROUND VEHICLE TO VERIFY IF THE BRAKES AND LIGHTS ARE WORKING. HOWEVER, THIS INSPECTION CONCEALS THE FLAW TO BOTH MECHANICS AND DRIVERS BECAUSE UNDER NORMAL CONDITIONS THE BRAKES ARE NOT APPLIED THAT HEAVILY. OF THE 300 FREIGHTLINER CASCADIAS IN THE FLEET, I AM RANDOMLY ASSIGNED TO A POOL OF 30 OF WHICH I HAVE CONFIRMED THIS DEFECT IN 8 TRACTORS FROM OCTOBER 2016 TO JANUARY 2017. DRIVERS HAVE COMPLAINED OF THE CRUISE CONTROL MALFUNCTION SINCE THE TRUCKS WERE NEW BUT WE ARE NOW AWARE THAT THE BRAKE LIGHTS ARE THE FAULT OF THE CRUISE CONTROL DEFECT.
