How 2022 compares with every other Freightliner Cascadia
A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing
out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single
owner can see from inside their own car.

NHTSA investigations into the 2022 Freightliner Cascadia
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.
On May 26, 2023, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) opened a Preliminary Evaluation (PE23010) to assess reports of false positive activation of the Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) system in model year (MY) 2017-2022 Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) vehicles. The reports alleged that activation of the AEB system occurred while driving with no apparent obstruction in the vehicle's forward path, resulting in sudden vehicle deceleration. DTNA indicated that it received of a total of 315 reports that may relate to the alleged defect in MY 2017-2022 DTNA vehicles. DTNA stated that the va...

Recalls on the 2022 Freightliner Cascadia
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 20247456,238 units in Canada
Visual System
Issue: On certain trucks, the windshield glass may not allow the amount of light required by the Canadian regulations. Safety Risk: This small error does not affect safety. Corrective Actions: This is not a recall. Daimler Truck North America has made changes to ensure that all new trucks have compliant windshields.
Recall 202320649 units in Canada
Steering
Issue: On certain trucks, the cotter pin may be missing from the tie rod castle nut on the front steer axle. As a result, the nut could loosen. If this happens, the tie rod could detach from the steering arm and cause a loss of steering control. Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could create the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development.
Recall 2023060396 units in Canada
Lights And Instruments
Issue: On certain trucks, the tail lamps do not turn on when the daytime running lamps (DRLs) are on. Canadian regulations require that, if a vehicle has dash backlighting, the low beam headlamps and tail lamps must automatically switch on when it is dark or the tail lamps must stay on at all times. Safety Risk: Driving without tail lamps in low light conditions could make the truck less visible and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to update the parameters for the lighting system. For Western Star 4700 ZODIAC models, the service facility will replace or modify the wiring harness.
Recall 202305120,527 units in Canada
Brakes
Issue: On certain trucks, the brake modulator valves could corrode. As a result, the brakes on one wheel could fully apply when the roll stability control system activates. If this happens, there could be a brake pull that can cause the truck to change direction. Note: This problem does not affect the service brakes. Safety Risk: A brake pull that causes the vehicle to change direction suddenly can increase the risk of crash. Corrective Actions: Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to inspect, and if necessary, replace the brake modulator valves.
Recall 20226267,140 units in Canada
Brakes
Issue: On certain trucks, the brake modulator valves could corrode. As a result, the brakes on one wheel could fully apply during an adaptive cruise control braking event. If this happens, there could be a brake pull that can cause the truck to change direction. Note: This problem does not affect the regular service brakes.
Recall 2022300102 units in Canada
Steering
Issue: On certain trucks and walk-in vans, the steering gear may not have been assembled correctly. As a result, the steering gear could break and cause a loss of steering. Safety Risk: A loss of steering control could create the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Daimler Truck North America (DTNA) will contact owners by mail. The corrective actions for this recall are under development.
Recall 2021756389 units in Canada
Fuel System
Issue: On certain trucks, the fuel tubes between the fuel rail and the injectors may crack and create a fuel leak. Note: This recall only affects trucks equipped with a Cummins X12 diesel engines. Safety Risk: A fuel leak can create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Cummins will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a Cummins authorized service center to replace the fuel tubes for cylinders 4, 5 and 6 and install vibration isolators.
Recall 202139912,269 units in Canada
Electrical
Issue: On certain trucks built with aluminum battery cables, the terminal that attaches the battery cable to the frame may break. If this happens, there could be a loss of electrical power and the engine could shut off suddenly. Safety Risk: A loss of power while driving could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Daimler Trucks North America (DTNA) will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your truck to a DTNA authorized service facility to inspect the battery cables for corrosion and/or damage. They will be repaired or replaced with copper cables, as necessary.

There was brake failure during an accident or 4/23/21 on the Massachusetts turnpike where there was a fatality. The air dryer filter broke off and my question is regarding nhtsa part 573 safety recall report 22v-443. I would like to know the two simultaneous events in this recall test. I realize the production date is a month or less after the recall date of vehicles.

The system isn't working properly. The AEB(automatic emergency braking) has been braking when I was driving on ice for no reason almost making cars get skids. It's essential to not brake hard on a slippery road. But that system put me in dangerous conditions. Not only one time but several. I was afraid to drive with them on. Also, I tried to see how the truck goes without it, I unplugged it and the truck was braking properly and never had skidded on slippery roads. And funny thing my acceleration was better, and fuel consumption mile/gallons increased from 5.6 to 6.7. I know manufacturers are forced to install AEB, but I don't want to die from it. I don't need AEB and want you like the government to protect my life and right to disable legally AEB and lane changing system from the truck. I want to take responsibility 100% for any accidents front end collisions or losing control of a vehicle. I am a rally driver, I know how to handle equipment in severe conditions, I know physics and know-how to go off-road, drift. I don't want some system like AEB to held me liable if there would be an accident caused by it. I want you, as protector of our rights of life, liberty and pursuit of happiness to allow drivers to choose by the will to legally disable the AEB system taking responsibility. I take care of road safety and even want to buy one day a Cab Over Engine semi-truck because I am watching the road all the time. I hold a safe following distance and never did a hard brake in 3 years of driving to avoid a collision. I want an AEB system only when it gonna surpass my professional approach to safe driving. It needs more development and calibration, and cameras surrounding systems to do it better. As for now, I don't want to risk my life being an experiment in the eyes of big manufacturing companies.

FYI, this is the second 2022 Cascadia I’ve driven with this issue. The forward radar sensor detects a target 3 feet in front of me and slams on the brakes if the cruise control is set. I can over ride it by turning off the CC, but then I get constant alarms for following too closely and collision alerts. The issue has generated 4 critical events to my company. This happens randomly, with no warning whether I am in traffic or not. I believe this to be a significant safety issue at worst, and a very unpleasant driving environment at best. According to my company, this is not the only two tractors in which this occurs. My previous tractor was looked at by a Freightliner dealer who failed to repair the issue.
