NHTSA investigations into the 2020 Genesis G70

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Safety recalls included in this Audit Query (AQ) review include: Hyundai recalls 20V-520, 20V-543,...

Recalls on the 2020 Genesis G70

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2024403 7,579 units in Canada

Fuel System

Issue: On certain vehicles, the high-pressure fuel pump could fail. If this happens, the engine may run rough and the check engine light may turn on. This could also cause a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Note: For the Elantra, Kona and Veloster models, this recall only affects the N performance versions. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the engine control module software. The high-pressure fuel pump will be replaced, if necessary.

Recall 2024158 2,943 units in Canada

Engine

Issue: Under certain conditions, the left turbocharger oil feed pipe and hose assembly could become damaged. If this happens, oil could leak onto hot components. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a 3.3 L turbo (T-GDI) engine. This recall replaces recall R0159 (Transport Canada recall number 2019-350). Vehicles that were repaired under that recall also require this repair. Safety Risk: Oil that leaks onto hot components can create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the left turbocharger oil feed pipe and hose assembly.

Recall 2021134 123 units in Canada

Brakes

Issue: On certain vehicles, a problem in the control module for the antilock brake system (ABS) could cause it to short circuit. Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace fuse for the ABS module. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

On 2/17/2026 I was driving from my home to a fast food restaurant one mile away from my home. After picking up the food I dropped the food off about 3 miles down the road to my family member at their work and drove the 3.3 miles back from my family members work to my home. I arrived at my home and was walking into the house around 12:30 pm my car was off and locked. During my drive the car performed completely fine, there was no codes, no noises, no smells, the car drove how i would describe as intended. But at around 12:45 my neighbors were banging and ringing my doorbell to tell me that my car was on fire. I proceeded to escort my aunt and my grandmother out of the home as i watched my car continue to smoke and watched the flames continue to rise. Once removed from the home i called 911 who took my information down and informed me that a similar call was received a new minutes before and that fire, police and EMS were on the way. I watched as the car completely engulfed in flames and the fire department worked to put the fire out. The car is completely lost and resulted in damages to my garage and my other car parked next to it. I know previous genesis models have had recalls for issues in the engine bay that could result in fires. I do not see a recall for my vehicle but given the unexplainable cause of the fire at this time, believe it may be beneficial to submit a report.

On XXX, I delivered my 2020 Genesis G70 3.3T AWD Prestige (64,267 miles) to Jenkins Genesis of [XXX], for routine factory-recommended maintenance, including transmission, transfer case, front differential, rear limited-slip differential (LSD), brake fluid, and cooling system services. Before this visit, the vehicle had no history of drivetrain problems. It had recently completed an approximately 8½-hour drive from [XXX] to [XXX], followed by three weeks of normal driving, without any binding, vibration, shuddering, abnormal turning characteristics, warning lights, or drivability concerns. The dealership retained the vehicle for four days for what was represented as a one-day service. On XXX, I was told the vehicle had been road tested and was safe for release. **Immediately after taking delivery**, the vehicle developed severe drivetrain binding, violent shuddering, heavy vibration, and significant resistance during normal turns, creating an immediate safety hazard. I returned directly to the dealership. After initially stating they could not duplicate the condition, the dealership ultimately diagnosed **both rear CV half shafts as failed** and prepared an approximately $4,500 repair estimate. The dealership later performed a second rear LSD fluid service **without my knowledge or authorization** after concerns were raised about the original service. They initially offered to replace both rear CV half shafts at no cost, but later withdrew that offer and returned the vehicle to me with both rear CV half shafts still broken. I respectfully request that NHTSA investigate whether improper drivetrain service procedures, incorrect lubricant application, inadequate post-service inspection, or another safety-related condition can cause catastrophic driveline failure immediately following routine maintenance. I am also concerned that the forces sufficient to fracture both rear CV half shafts may have damaged other AWD drivetrain INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

My 2020 Genesis G70 is affected by Recall 24V-528 (high-pressure fuel pump defect). About 10 months after the recall service was marked “completed,” my car began showing DTC P0088 (Fuel Rail/System Pressure Too High), which is directly tied to the recall defect. On 8/30/25 car was hesitating when just slowly pulling out of driveway, and check engine light came on and stayed on. The car jerks and vibrates when foot is on the gas. There is now a very strong gasoline odor inside and outside the car, which was also noticed by a Genesis dealership employee when I pulled into the service garage. This raises serious fire and safety concerns. The dealer has told me the fuel pump and fuel line must be replaced. While all parts should be covered, I am currently waiting to hear from the dealership in regards to if Genesis approves/agrees to cover the costs of the repairs needed to my car. I was forced to drive 1 hour and 40 minutes to the nearest Genesis dealership on 9/3 while the car was unsafe, with my child in the vehicle at times. This was extremely dangerous. I was also initially told I would have to either drive the unsafe vehicle back home while waiting for approval or pay for a rental myself. Only after I became very upset and crying, was I given a loaner. That loaner has a 100-mile per day limit, yet I live about 100 miles away from the dealership, making it impractical. This defect is ongoing and unresolved. Genesis has not yet confirmed coverage of all related parts, and I am concerned the recall repair was inadequate. Safety Concerns: Risk of fuel leak/fire from defective pump/fuel system. Strong fuel odor indicating vapor or liquid leak. Unsafe requirement to drive long distance while defect is present. Dealer attempting to deny full repair coverage under recall.

We have been trying to get a dealership to service our recall for months. We were told they don't do them at a few Genesis dealerships in the area and then one told they don't have the the parts and to check back with them and that was months ago and the still don't have what's needed. I am fearful for my family's safety and can't seem to get any assistance in getting this matter resolved. We visited the following dealerships: West Houston Hyundai Genesis 16803 Katy Fwy, Houston TX, 77094 Genesis of Spring 20440 Interstate 45, Spring TX, 77373 We called via phone the following dealership: (and was told they don't service Genesis) Sterling Mccall Hyundai 10301 Southwest Fwy, Houston TX, 77074

Vehicle's high pressure fuel pump malfunctioned while driving causing the car's speed to decrease erratically causing a safety risk. The local Genesis dealer acknowledges that the high pressure fuel pump needs to be replaced and is the subject of a recall, but is requiring me to pay for the repair despite the recall notice stating that: ". . . THE HIGH-PRESSURE FUEL PUMP WILL ALSO BE REPLACED. THIS REMEDY WILL BE OFFERED AT NO COST TO OWNERS FOR ALL AFFECTED VEHICLES, REGARDLESS OF WHETHER THE AFFECTED VEHICLES ARE STILL COVERED UNDER HYUNDAI/GENESIS NEW VEHICLE LIMITED WARRANTY."

Both Michelin 225/40 ZR 19 Pilot Sport 4S front tires had severe "chunking", or tread peeling, on them after only 8,000 miles. Atlantic Tire (Bayamon, Puerto Rico), the sole distributor and service center of Michelin in Puerto Rico, informed me that approximately 30 other Genesis G70's had recently made warranty claims regarding the front tires with severe "chunking". WHEELS

On or about May 2022, and after on 8,000 miles driven, noticed severe "chunking", or tread peeling, on both front tires of my 2020 Genesis G70 purchased October 2020 from Genesis Puerto Rico, located at Plaza Las Americas, San Juan, Puerto Rico. The tread on both tires was coming apart to the point where you could see the metal underneath the treads. Driving this vehicle at high speeds without noticing the defect could have resulted in a blown tire and a potentially serious accident. By the time I noticed the issue, it was already at a relatively severe state, thus the onset of the symptoms is unknown, however likely sometime 2021. I took the car to the dealership. They referred me to a third party tire distributor (Atlantic Tires, Bayamon, Puerto Rico). This third party distributor indicated that approximately 30 different Genesis G70's had recently made warranty claims with the same severe chunking on both front tires. They believe all the tires in that lot purchased for the Genesis G70's have the same manufacturer's defect. The third party tire distributor confirmed this to be a defect of the tire advised me not to drive the vehicle anymore until replacing the tires. This is in San Juan, Puerto Rico, there is only one Genesis dealership on the whole island, thus all the G70's with the defect were sold from that one location. The dealership has also been aware of the defect and has neglected to inform the potentially affected customers and/or report this safety defect to the NHTSA. My girlfriend primarily drives the vehicle and she would never have noticed the tire damage. The tires in question are Michelin tires, however, Michelin does not have formal representation in Puerto Rico and Atlantic Tire serves as their distributor in Puerto Rico.
