NHTSA investigations into the 2007 GMC Acadia

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Recalls on the 2007 GMC Acadia

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

STRUCTURE:BODY:HATCHBACK/LIFTGATE

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 2008-2012 Buick Enclave vehicles manufactured January 3, 2007, to February 29, 2012, 2009-2012 Chevrolet Traverse vehicles manufactured July 6, 2008, to March 9, 2012, 2007-2012 GMC Acadia vehicles manufactured September 15, 2006, to February 29, 2012, and 2007-2010 Saturn Outlook vehicles manufactured August 17, 2006, to March 18, 2010. The affected vehicles, equipped with the power liftgate option, have gas struts that hold the power liftgate up when open. These struts may prematurely wear and the open liftgate may suddenly fall.

Risk: If the open liftgate unexpectedly falls, it may strike a person, increasing their risk of injury.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

GM IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006-2009 BUICK, LUCERNE; CADILLAC DTS; HUMMER H2; MODEL YEAR 2008-2009 BUICK ENCLAVE; CADILLAC CTS; MODEL YEAR 2007-2009 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE; GMC ACADIA, SIERRA, YUKON, YUKON XL; SATURN OUTLOOK; AND MODEL YEAR 2009 CHEVROLET TRAVERSE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HEATED WASHER FLUID SYSTEM (HWFS). A RECALL WAS IMPLEMENTED IN 2008 TO ADD A FUSE TO THE CONTROL CIRCUIT HARNESS TO ADDRESS THE POTENTIAL CONSEQUENCES OF A PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD (PCB) ELECTRICAL SHORT. HOWEVER, THERE HAVE BEEN NEW REPORTS OF THERMAL INCIDENTS ON HWFS MODULES AFTER THIS IMPROVEMENT WAS INSTALLED. THESE INCIDENTS RESULTED FROM A NEW FAILURE MODE ATTRIBUTED TO THE DEVICE'S THERMAL PROTECTION FEATURE. THE SIGNIFICANCE VARIES FROM MINOR DISTORTION TO CONSIDERABLE MELTING OF THE PLASTIC AROUND THE HWFS FLUID CHAMBER.

Risk: IT IS POSSIBLE FOR THE HEATED WASHER MODULE TO IGNITE AND A FIRE MAY OCCUR.

08V441000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

GM IS RECALLING 857,735 MY 2006-2008 BUICK LUCERNE; CADILLAC DTS; HUMMER H2; MY 2007-2008 CADILLAC ESCALADE, ESCALADE ESV, ESCALADE EXT; CHEVROLET AVALANCHE, SILVERADO, SUBURBAN, TAHOE; GMC ACADIA, SIERRA, YUKON, YUKON XL, SATURN OUTLOOK; AND MY 2008 BUICK ENCLAVE VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH A HEATED WIPER WASHER FLUID SYSTEM. A SHORT CIRCUIT ON THE PRINTED CIRCUIT BOARD FOR THE WASHER FLUID HEATER MAY OVERHEAT THE CONTROL-CIRCUIT GROUND WIRE.

Risk: THIS MAY CAUSE OTHER ELECTRICAL FEATURES TO MALFUNCTION, CREATE AN ODOR, OR CAUSE SMOKE INCREASING THE RISK OF A FIRE.

08V410000

VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:LINKAGES

GM IS RECALLING 88,809 MY 2008 BUICK ENCLAVE, AND MY 2007-2008 GMC ACADIA AND SATURN OUTLOOK VEHICLES CURRENTLY OR PREVIOUSLY REGISTERED IN THE FOLLOWING STATES: ALASKA, COLORADO, CONNECTICUT, DELAWARE, IDAHO, ILLINOIS, INDIANA, IOWA, MAINE, MARYLAND, MASSACHUSETTS, MICHIGAN, MINNESOTA, MONTANA, NEBRASKA, NEW HAMPSHIRE, NEW JERSEY, NEW YORK, NORTH DAKOTA, OHIO, PENNSYLVANIA, RHODE ISLAND, SOUTH DAKOTA, UTAH, VERMONT, WEST VIRGINIA, WISCONSIN, WYOMING, AND THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA. IF A BUILDUP OF SNOW OR ICE ON THE WINDSHIELD OR ON THE WIPERS RESTRICTS THE MOVEMENT OF THE WIPER ARM, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER LINKAGE MAY BECOME DETACHED FROM THE MOTOR SHAFT AND THE WIPERS MAY BECOME INOPERATIVE.

Risk: IF THIS WERE TO OCCUR, DRIVER VISIBILITY COULD BE REDUCED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.

07V062000

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:SENSOR/CONTROL MODULE-INACTIVE

ON CERTAIN VEHICLES, THE SENSING AND DIAGNOSTIC MODULE (SDM), WHICH CONTROLS THE FUNCTION OF FRONT AIR BAGS, MAY NOT OPERATE PROPERLY. AS A RESULT, THE FRONT AIR BAGS MAY FAIL TO DEPLOY IN A FRONTAL CRASH. ALSO, THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL MAY FAIL TO PROVIDE WARNING THAT THE SYSTEM IS INOPERATIVE.

Risk: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH, THIS CONDITION COULD INCREASE THE RISK OF INJURY TO OCCUPANTS IN THE FRONT SEAT.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2019420 5,327 units in Canada

Other

Issue: This recall is for aftermarket replacement rear window glass produced by Vitro Automotriz. Certain rear window glass may not have been properly tempered. If the window breaks, the glass may separate into large pieces instead of very small ones. Note: This is a voluntary recall that is not being conducted under the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Safety Risk: Glass that breaks in to large pieces could create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: The company will notify consumers by mail and instruct them to inspect the designation code marked on the rear window glass. Products affected by this recall have the designation “DOT 287” along with the lettering “VMR” (Replacement Market) and a date code that is before July 2019. This information is printed on the bottom corner of the glass. Consumers should contact Vitro's customer service at 1-412-995-6457 or argbacklites@vitro.com to arrange for replacement of the glass.

Recall 2015280 36,369 units in Canada

Structure

On certain vehicles equipped with a power liftgate system, the gas-filled struts (which help to raise and support the liftgate) may prematurely wear. These vehicles have a Prop Rod Recovery system intended to accomplish a controlled, slow return of the liftgate to the closed position if the liftgate’s gas struts are no longer capable of supporting the weight of the liftgate. The vehicle would provide audible warnings and flash the tail lamps to indicate there is a problem. However, the liftgate’s Prop Rod Recovery system software may be unable to detect/stop a liftgate with prematurely worn gas struts from falling too quickly after the liftgate is opened. This could allow the liftgate to drop suddenly, placing anyone beneath or near the gate at risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will reprogram the power liftgate actuator motor ECU with a new software and will verify power liftgate operation following the reprogram.

Recall 2010189 99,000 units in Canada

Accessories

On certain vehicles equipped with a Heated Washer Fluid System (HWFS), a short circuit on the printed circuit board for the washer fluid heater may overheat the control-circuit ground wire. A repair was implemented in a recall in 2008, however, there have been new reports of thermal incidents on heated washer fluid system modules after this improvement was installed. This situation may cause some minor distortion, but also could lead to melting of the plastic around the heated washer fluid system, or cause a fire. Correction: Dealers will permanently disable and remove the heated washer fluid module. An updated page will be provided and inserted in the Owner Manual to document the removal of the feature.

Recall 2008313 54,431 units in Canada

Other

On certain vehicles equipped with a heated washer fluid system, a short circuit on the printed circuit board for the washer fluid heater may overheat the control-circuit ground wire. This situation may cause other electrical features to malfunction which could cause smoke and in some cases a fire. Correction: Dealer will install a wire harness with an in-line fuse.

Recall 2008283 16,533 units in Canada

Other

On certain vehicles registered in areas with moderate to heavy snowfall, a buildup of snow or ice on the windshield or wipers could restrict the movement of the wiper arm and the wiper linkage may become detached from motor shaft and the wipers will become inoperative. This situation, in conjunction with traffic, road conditions, and driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash. Correction: Dealers will install a new wiper crank arm, driver's side link, and crank arm nut.

Recall 2007044 1,079 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, the sensing and diagnostic module (SDM), which controls the function of front airbags, may not operate properly. As a result, the front airbags may fail to deploy in a frontal crash. Also, the airbag warning lamp in the instrument panel may fail to provide warning that the system is inoperative. Failure to deploy the front airbags during a crash could leave seat occupants susceptible to increase injuries. Correction: Dealers will re-program the SDM.

when accelerating onto the freeway, hit 55mph and the car just stopped going. it would not go into any gear, turned off car and it still wouldnt go into gear. AAA showed up said "oh, we see this in the acadia all the time" plugged something in under the dash, the check engine light went off and he said "there you go, now it'll work fine, just dont give it hard gas when getting up to speed" turns out the code was a tranny code that when he cleared it the tranny would then work. Its bad enough i have to deal with this leaking A/C unit, 3 cans a week, and that smell is terrible, i cant even get the car up to speed when entering the freeway traffic. please make gmc fix these issues, i know im not the only one with both issues. GMC PLEASE TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THE SUNROOF LEAK ISSUE! YEARS OF DATA, ALMOST 100 COMPLAINTS, SOMEONE SHOULD ALREADY KNOW ABOUT THIS AND HAVE A SOLUTION! MY CAR HAS SERIOUS LEAKING ISSUES FROM THE SUNROOF ABOVE THE DRIVER, ELECTRICAL TO CABIN DOESN'T ALWAYS WORK EXCEPT DASH LIGHTS, AND HEADLIGHTS/TURN SIGNALS WORK SPORADICALLY. THE LOCKS WORK WHEN THEY'RE IN THE MOOD. ALSO MEANS AC/HEAT WORKS SOMETIMES..I LIVE UP NORTH AND IT'S 24 TODAY. MY WINDSHIELD WIPER FLUID REMAINS EMPTY BECAUSE IT RANDOMLY TURNS ON AND DRAINS OUT: WHICH ALSO MEANS REPLACING MY WIPERS IS A BAD IDEA BECAUSE THEY RANDOMLY TURN ON FOR AT MOST AN HOUR AND DRY WIPING THE WINDOW...AND DESTROYING THE WIPER BLADES. ALL WHEEL DRIVE WON'T WORK, DESPITE MECHANIC SEEING NO ISSUES. I'VE TAKEN DOWN THE MOUNTS AND TRIED TO FLUSH THE DRAINING TUBES MYSELF..AND THEY'RE CLEAR WITH NO LEAKS WHEN I TESTED THE TUBES. I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO. I WISH I COULD AFFORD TO FIX THIS, BECAUSE WE NEED THIS VEHICLE; EVERYDAY I'M SCARED TO DRIVE IT! WE WON'T DRIVE AT NIGHT FOR THE RISK OF THE HEADLIGHTS SHUTTING OFF, AND ALWAYS FINGERS CROSSED MY TURN SIGNALS WILL FUNCTION TODAY. I HAVE KIDS! MY FAMILIES NOT RICH, WE CAN'T AFFORD ANOTHER VEHICLE OR THE COSTLY REPAIR, BEING THAT I'M A SINGLE MOM BARELY BUYING BREAD AND PAYING RENT AS IT IS SINCE MY HOURS GOT CUT FROM COVID. I ONLY WANTED A SAFE VEHICLE, I DIDN'T REALIZE I HAD TO BE SPECIFIC AND ASK FOR ONE WITH HEADLIGHTS AND ELECTRONICS WORKING APPROPRIATELY, TOO. I'LL BE SURE TO NEXT TIME I BUY A CAR...WHENEVER THAT LUCKY DAY OCCURS. PLEASE PRAY FOR US.

DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY THE CHECK STABILITY CONTROL WARNING FLASHES AND THE MOTOR GETS REALLY LOUD. CLEANED THE GROUND WIRES AND THE MOTOR IS NO LONGER MAKING THE LOUD NOISE OR JERKING BUT NOT MY SEAT HEATERS NO LONGER WORK AND NOW THE BATTERY LIGHT FLASHES BUT JUST 2 MONTHS AGO I REPLACED THE BATTERY AND ALTERNATOR! AIR BAGS

2007 GMC ACADIA, SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL AND STABILITRACK KEEPS POPPING UP. IT LOSES THE POWER STEERING OFF AND ON IF YOU DRIVE IT IN THE RAIN AT ANY SPEED. WINDOWS CAN NOT BE CONTROLLED BY DRIVERS MASTER BUTTONS. VEHICLE HAS 173000 MILES ON IT. PURCHASED USED FROM BUCKEYE NISSAN. NOTICED ISSUES RIGHT AWAY BUT THEIR MECHANIC SAID THERE IS NOTHING COMING UP WHEN THEY HOOK UP THE DIAGNOSTICS. NO WARRANTY WHEN PURCHASED USED, THIS IS MY FIRST VEHICLE PURCHASE. I WAS ABLE TO DRIVE THE VEHICLE FOR A YEAR THEN GOT THE SERVICE TRACTION CONTROL AND STABILITRACK READING AND THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT GO OVER 5 MPH. STILL PAYING PAYMENTS ON THE VEHICLE, I COULD NOT AFFORD TO TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC SO I PURCHASED A CHEAP CAR FROM A FRIEND AND THE ACADIA SAT IN MY DRIVE WAY FOR 2 YEARS. AFTER I PAID IT OFF I STARTED TO LOOK INTO REPAIRING IT. I PUT A NEW BATTERY IN IT AFTER IT SAT FOR SO LONG AND IT STARTED RIGHT UP AND DROVE LIKE THERE WAS NEVER AN ISSUE. I HAVE SINCE REPLACED THE TORQUE CONVERTER. STILL GET ENGINE LIGHT AND TRACTION CONTROL TURNS OFF AND SERVICE STABILITRACK READING BUT HAS NOT HAD IT SLOW DOWN TO 5 MPH AGAIN. NOW IF I DRIVE IN THE RAIN THE POWER STEERING CUTS IN AND OUT AND IS EXTREMELY DANGEROUS AS IT HAPPENS AT ANY SPEED. I HAVE SEEN SEVERAL REVIEWS ON THIS VEHICLE THAT SAY THE SAME AS MINE. THE WORST PART IS THAT GM IS AWARE OF THESE ISSUES BUT WILL NOT ASSIST IN REPAIR IF THE VEHICLE HAS OVER A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF MILES ON IT.
