SERVICE BRAKES

The engine failed on a 2015 Hyundai Elantra with approximately 71,000 miles. The vehicle has an open, unresolved safety recall (Recall 251, NHTSA #23V651000) for an ABS module brake fluid leak that Hyundai has acknowledged but has not provided a remedy for. The vehicle is currently at an independent repair facility and is available for inspection upon request. The vehicle repeatedly shut off without warning while in motion and restarted mid-drive, causing sudden loss of power steering and power brakes while driving. This occurred on multiple occasions and was documented by an independent service center in February 2026. This presents a serious risk of accident, injury, or death to the driver and others on the road. The check engine light was illuminated. The vehicle experienced recurring brake issues requiring multiple repairs over several years, including brake replacement before 2026 and rear rotor, brake pad, and brake line repairs in February 2026. These brake symptoms are consistent with the known ABS module defect covered under open Recall 251. The engine shutoff symptom was first documented in February 2026 and continued until engine failure in May 2026.

SERVICE BRAKES

I am submitting this complaint because in the fall of last year 2023, I received a recall notice in the mail from Hyundai advising me of a safety recall with the ABS Module and risk of fire. As of today, the manufacturer has not made any efforts to remedy this issue and I am advised to park my vehicle away from structures to avoid fire. In order to keep myself and family safe I park my vehicle on the street in front of my home, but will not be able to continue doing this for much longer. Because of HOA regulations I will be fined if I continue to park my car on the street and will be forced to park in my driveway or garage. This has caused major inconveniences in my life as well as the worry that my car could become a risk to myself or others due to this safety recall. I do not believe that Hyundai has taken the appropriate measures to resolve the issue. I would like further investigation to insure the manufacturer does the right thing to protect not only myself, but other consumers who are affected by the recall. I contacted Hyundai on [XXX], received an apology; however I was not given an estimate of when they will have a resolution available. This is an unacceptable response after 6-7 months without communication from Hyundai. Reference number of call # [XXX]. The brakes failed due to rotted brake lines the fluid leaked out and the brake warning light came on. I inspected the car and the lines that run from the front to the back are rusted at the point that the lines are supported. Canada has a recall for this issue because it is such a widespread issue. Hyundai needs to be made accountable for making brake lines out of inferior metal.

This is a complaint for recall remedy. This recall has no remedy and they ask I park my car outside of my garage in the dead of winter. I live 4 hours from the nearest in-state dealer that could potentially provide a loaner vehicle. I’m not comfortable driving a car that I have been told can catch fire while parked OR driving on a 4 hour drive. I’ve called Hyundai multiple times with no reprieve.

at 40,000 miles Colts Neck, NJ Crash 1 injured

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC

The contact owns a 2015 Hyundai Elantra. The contact stated that upon accelerating from a stop light, the vehicle in the right lane abruptly attempted a U-turn, colliding with the contact's vehicle on the front passenger side. The air bags did not deploy. No warning lights were illuminated at the time of the collision, but the ABS warning light had illuminated intermittently before the collision. A police report was filed, and injuries were reported. The contact did not seek immediate medical attention but was treated days later for a concussion, a fractured collar, a broken rib, a broken wrist, and two herniated discs. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic, who diagnosed a failure with the Malfunction Indicator Lamp sensors, determining that the air bag warning would have been illuminated had the sensors have been functioning properly. The vehicle was repaired. After investigating the failure, the contact related the failure to NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V651000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulics); the VIN was included but parts were not yet available. The manufacturer was notified of the failure but did not assist. The failure mileage was 40,000.
