NHTSA investigations into the 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough
complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks
something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.
The Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) has received eight Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) and eight Kia America, Inc. (Kia) Part 573 Recall Reports between 2016 and 2023. The combined 16 safety recalls all involve the antilock braking system (ABS) modules or Hydraulic Electronic Control Units (HECU) manufactured by the equipment supplier Mando. The Part 573 Recall Reports contain varying defect descriptions and differing remedy descriptions for the same or similar equipment supplied by Mando. Safety recalls included in this Audit Query (AQ) review include: Hyundai recalls 20V-520, 20V-543,...
On October 28, 2013, Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing a safety defect in the braking system of approximately 43,500 model year (MY) 2009 through 2012 Hyundai Genesis sedans (NHTSA Recall No. 13V-489).The Hyundai report indicates that the recalled vehicles may contain brake fluid that does not sufficiently inhibit corrosion on the zinc plating of control valve armatures in the Hydraulic Electronic Control Unit (HECU) module. The DIR indicated that, over time, the build-up of corrosion products may affect operation of HECU control va...
Recalls on the 2011 Hyundai Genesis Coupe
A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which
the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous
enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION:INTERLOCK/LOCKOUT
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Genesis Coupe vehicles. A return spring in the ignition lock switch may fracture, which can result in unintended vehicle movement when the vehicle is started in gear, without the parking brake applied.
Risk: Unintended vehicle movement can increase the risk of a crash.
23V651000
SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe, Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and 2013 Santa Fe Sport vehicles. The Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short, which can result in an engine compartment fire while parked or driving.
Risk: An engine compartment fire while parked or driving can increase the risk of injury.
16V722000
AIR BAGS:SENSOR:OCCUPANT CLASSIFICATION
Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2010-2016 Genesis Coupe vehicles manufactured December 12, 2008, to June 11, 2016. The electrical harness connector for the front passenger seat Occupant Classification System (OCS) may dislodge when the seat is moved.
Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger frontal air bag, the disconnected OCS would, by default, cause the first stage, and only the first stage, of the air bag to deploy, whether there is a child seat in the front seat and the bag should not deploy or if the crash is severe and both stages should deploy. Either scenario increases the risk of injury to the front seat occupant.
13V113000
EXTERIOR LIGHTING:BRAKE LIGHTS:SWITCH
Hyundai Motor Company (Hyundai) is recalling certain model year 2006-2009 Accent, model year 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata and Sante Fe,2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon vehicles. Originally, in April 2013, Hyundai recalled 1,059,824 model year 2007-2009 Accent and Tucson, model year 2007-2010 Elantra, model year 2007-2011 Santa Fe, model year 2008-2009 Veracruz, model year 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, and model year 2011 Sonata vehicles. In September 2013, Hyundai informed the agency that it was adding more vehicles to this campaign, representing an additional 652,512 units. The total number of vehicles being recalled is now 1,712,336. In the affected vehicles, the stop lamp switch may malfunction. A malfunctioning stop lamp switch may cause the brake lights to not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed or may cause an inability to deactivate the cruise control by depressing the brake pedal. Additionally, a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may also result in intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, affect the operation of the brake tra
Risk: Failure to illuminate the stop lamps during braking or inability to disengage the cruise control could increase the risk of a crash. Additionally, when the ignition is in the 'ON' position, the transmission shifter may be able to be moved out of Park without first applying the brake. This may lead to unintentional movement of the car which may increase the risk of a crash.
Canada — Transport Canada
Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not
always mirror the American ones.
Recall 20244315,201 units in Canada
Powertrain
Issue: On certain vehicles, the clutch ignition lock switch could fail. As a result, you may be able to start the vehicle when the clutch pedal is not depressed. This could cause the vehicle to move suddenly. Note: This recall only affects vehicles equipped with a manual transmission. Safety Risk: A parked vehicle that moves suddenly could create the risk of an injury or a crash. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the clutch ignition lock switch.
Recall 2024080353,849 units in Canada
Brakes
Issue: On certain vehicles, brake fluid could leak into the control module for the antilock brake system (ABS) and cause it to short circuit. Note: This recall replaces recall R0246 (Transport Canada recall number 2023-527). For the Sonata model, only the Sonata Hybrid model is affected by this recall. Safety Risk: A short circuit could create a fire risk, even while the vehicle is parked and turned off. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to replace the fuse for the ABS module. Hyundai recommends that you should park your vehicle outdoors and away from other vehicles or structures until the recall repairs have been completed.
Recall 2023527326,942 units in Canada
Brakes
This recall was replaced by Transport Canada Recall No. 2024-080. Issue: On certain vehicles, brake fluid could leak into the control module for the antilock brake system (ABS) and cause it to short circuit.
Recall 2023125404,543 units in Canada
Brakes
Issue: Hyundai is conducting a special service campaign that provides anti-corrosion treatment to certain underbody components. Over time, components under the vehicle, including brake lines could corrode. If this happens, a brake line could fail and leak. A brake fluid leak can result in reduced braking. Safety Risk: Reduced braking can cause an extended stopping distance and increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the underbody, including the brake lines. The dealer will apply an anti-corrosion treatment to certain parts, and replace the brake lines if necessary.
Recall 201650815,756 units in Canada
Airbag
On certain vehicles, objects or debris located under the front passenger seat could contact the electrical connector of the Occupant Classification System (OCS) and disconnect the connector if the seat is moved. This would disable the OCS and illuminate the instrument cluster Air Bag warning lamp. If the OCS is disabled, the first stage front passenger airbag would deploy in a frontal collision, regardless of the weight and size of the front passenger seat occupant. If the seat were to be occupied by a child seat or small statured occupant, it could increase the risk of injury. Additionally, this condition could cause the second stage of the frontal passenger airbag to fail to deploy during a crash, which could increase the risk of injury to the front passenger seat occupant. Correction: Dealers will secure the OCS connector to prevent it from being disconnected.
Recall 2013099254,784 units in Canada
Electrical
On certain vehicles, the stop lamp switch may fail and cause intermittent operation of the brake lights. Failure of the brake lights to illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed could result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the switch.

I was driving home on January 1, 2023 at 5 AM at about 60 mph on an interstate when I heard a sound come from the back of my car and then looked into the rearview mirror and smelled smoke and saw fire flames in my rear and side mirrors. I tried to use my brakes to stop my car, but the brakes would not work, so I took it out of Drive and put it into park… which slowed the car down and I was able to exit the car right before it burst into flames. The car is now a total loss.

MY FATHER IS CURRENTLY LOOKING AFTER MY VEHICLE AND WHILE HE WAS DOING ROUTINE CHECKS WHEN WENT TO DEPRESS THE BRAKE PETAL IT SANK ALL THE WAY TO THE FLOOR. HE LATER TOOK IT TO A MECHANIC WHO THEN BLEED THE SYSTEM A FEW TIMES ONLY TO FIND OUT THAT THE FRONT RIGHT BRAKE AND REAR LEFT BRAKE ARE OPERATING AS NORMAL. AS IT WOULD TURN OUT, HOWEVER, HYUNDAI ISSUED A RECALL FOR THIS BUT ONLY FOR THE GENESIS SEDANS AND NOT THE COUPES. HYUNDAI RECALL #114 AND NHTSA RECALL #13V489000 STATE THE BRAKE FLUID THE MANUFACTURE USES DOES NOT PROTECT THE H.E.C.U. OR HYDRAULIC ELECTRONIC CONTROL UNIT (A.K.A. ABS CONTROL UNIT) AGAINST INTERNAL CORROSION. SO THE INTERNAL VALVES WILL CORRODED AND PREVENT THE BRAKES FROM OPERATING PROPERLY. IN MY 2011 GENESIS COUPE THIS IS CURRENTLY THE ISSUE. OTHER COUPE OWNERS ARE HAVING SIMILAR ISSUES WHERE THEY CAN'T STOP THE CAR PROPER AND/OR THE BRAKE PETAL SINKS TO THE FLOOR AT RANDOM TIMES WHILE DRIVING SLOW OR AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS AND THE BRAKE DON'T OPERATE PROPERLY OR AT ALL! THE MANUFACTURE SEEMS TO BE AWARE OF THE ISSUE BUT WON'T DO ANYTHING ABOUT IT. REPLACING THE MASTER CYLINDER AND COMPLETELY BLEEDING THE SYSTEM DOESN'T HAVE ANY AFFECT FOR THE ISSUE. TO REPLACE THE UNIT, I'M LOOKING AT ROUGHLY $3,200 OF MY OWN MONEY TO REPLACE THE H.E.C.U DUE TO DEFECTIVE BRAKE FLUID THAT HAS CORRODED THE INTERNALS. THE CAR HAS BARELY BEEN DRIVEN WITH LESS ABOUT 30K MILES ON IT. THIS A GRAVE SAFETY CONCERN AND HYUNDAI NEEDS TO ADDRESS THE ISSUES FOR NOT JUST THE SEDANS BUT THE COUPES AS WELL! IF I OR THE DRIVER OF MY CAR NEEDED TO MAKE AN EMERGENCY STOP THERE IS NO TELLING IF THE BRAKES WOULD OPERATE IN THAT MOMENT AS THEY SHOULD. INJURY OR DEATH COULD OCCUR FOR NOT JUST THE DRIVER BUT OTHER CASUALTIES THAT COULD BE PREVENTED IF HYUNDAI FIXES THIS ISSUE FOR ALL HYUNDAI GENESIS COUPES. BRAKE OPERATION IS VASTLY IMPORTANT IN ALL VEHICLES. THIS PROBLEM IS SERIOUS.
