Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Elantra, 2019-2021 Kona and Veloster vehicles equipped with 2.0L Nu MPI engines. The piston oil rings may not have been properly heat-treated, which could result in engine damage.

Risk: A damaged engine may stall, increasing the risk of a crash. In addition, oil may leak onto hot exhaust components, increasing the risk of a fire.

Hyundai Motor America (Hyundai) is recalling certain 2019 Veloster vehicles. In certain side impact crashes, the driver's door latch housing and locking cable can become damaged, allowing the driver's side door to open.

Risk: The door opening could result in occupant ejection or increase the risk of injury in the event of a crash.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the high-pressure fuel pump could fail. If this happens, the engine may run rough and the check engine light may turn on. This could also cause a sudden loss of engine power while driving. Note: For the Elantra, Kona and Veloster models, this recall only affects the N performance versions. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to update the engine control module software. The high-pressure fuel pump will be replaced, if necessary.

Issue: On certain vehicles, the engine's piston oil rings may be defective. This can cause engine wear that can lead to increased oil consumption. Eventually, this can create abnormal engine noise and the oil pressure warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail. Note: This only affects vehicles equipped with a 2.0 L Nu MPI engine. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. An engine failure could also create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the engine. The engine will be replaced, if necessary. Hyundai is also developing a Piston-ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software update to be installed when available; it will alert the driver of potential damage before an engine failure occurs.

An engine failure would cause a sudden loss of power with an inability to restart. Note: This affects Sonata and Santa Fe Sport equipped with a 2.4 L GDI or 2.0 L Turbo GDI engine, as well as Tucson equipped with a 2.4 L GDI engine. Safety Risk: A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of an accident. Corrective Actions: The company will notify owners by mail. Owners will be instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to update the software for the engine control module. The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds, the engine would overheat and the vehicle would stall. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer who diagnosed that the engine needed to be replaced. The engine was replaced and failures were remedied. Later while operating the vehicle the contact would become ill and had experienced dizziness and nausea which required medical treatment. The contact was diagnosed with high carbon monoxide levels. The vehicle was later taken to the local mechanic who informed that the carbon monoxide levels inside the cabin of the vehicle were high. The cause f the failure was not determined. The manufacturer was notified of the failure no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 42,000.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE: AUTOMATIC EMERGENCY BRAKING

The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving 60 MPH with his two-year-old daughter in the vehicle, the automatic emergency braking system erroneously engaged and caused the vehicle to come to a stop, which almost caused a crash. The contact stated that the failure was intermittent, and the message "Collision Avoidance - Stop" was displayed while there was no obstacle or vehicle in front of the vehicle. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and contacted the local dealer, who called and informed the contact that the vehicle was out of warranty. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The contact stopped driving the vehicle due to safety concerns. The failure mileage was 100,391.

I started to hear a grinding sound when breaking and I took it into a Meineke dealer to see about getting it fixed. During a general diagnostic they discovered that 3 of the four brakes were not working and the calipers needed replaced. I was told this was due to a manufacturer issue and that there will be a recall on these parts soon but no ETA. They informed me that they have seen this similar issue on many 2019 Hyundai Velosters and there would be a recall soon but I have no ETA and I cannot drive my vehicle.

Engine locked on me during driving almost caused a car rear ending me during rush hour. Called AAA and they printed out a recall form for over heated piston that may cause engine damage. Towed to Tito Auto care and then printed out the same information for recall details NHTSA Campaign Number 21V301000. Advised me to take to Hyundai dealership to repair for free. Hyundai states the vendor number is not pulling up for a recall. Both AAA and Tito Autocare stated they would fight this. I am requesting you order the Hyundai Manufaturer to repair. I believe there were missed vin numbers in the recall including my vin number.

Attempted to pull out of our neighborhood and car check engine light as well as every other light came on on the dashboard. Car completely loss power and stalled in the middle of the road. Multiple attempts to re-start the car but would not start. Had mechanic check vehicle, originally pulled a code for fuel pump but when tested a few days later and at the fuel pump that code was gone. Checked everything could not find a reason it would not start. Called the Hyundai dealership and they said yeah your engine lost compression and probably has to be replaced but we can't tell you for sure until you bring it in and it will be $350 to tell you if that is the problem. I am having it taken in to see. The car VIN does not show as part of the 21V 301 recall on this site but is experiencing the exact issues listed in the recall. We will see...

This car was recalled for a bad engine and because their computer would not throw off a code they refused to replace the bad engine. It has 60000 miles on it and has been well maintained. The rocker arms have gone bad and there are countless others who have the same issue that Hyundai refuses to address because now computer code was thrown off. They hide behind this to avoid replacing their bad engines.

The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated that while driving 76 MPH, the vehicle went into LIMP Mode and decelerated to 30 MPH. The check engine warning light was illuminated. Additionally, the vehicle experienced intermittent, unintended acceleration. The contact shifted the transmission to neutral(N), but the vehicle failed to stop. The contact then pressed the shift lock release button, and the vehicle was able to stop. The steering wheel also inadvertently turned left or right while driving, and the Lane Keep Assist System was not activated. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where it was diagnosed that fuel and oil were leaking into the exhaust pipe, allowing smoke into the cabin. The dealer replaced the alternator, battery, and spark plugs, but the failure persisted. The dealer notified the manufacturer about the failure. The vehicle was then taken to Tarr Hyundai (5524 W Andrew Johnson Hwy, Morristown, TN 37814); however, the dealer was initially unable to duplicate the failure. When Tarr Hyundai was able to duplicate the failure, the failure information was forwarded to the manufacturer. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and several cases were opened. The final case was resolved through arbitration, and the manufacturer was ordered to buy back the vehicle; however, the contact declined the buyback offer. The failure mileage was approximately 141.

There is a concern for the operator's safety and others operating around a stalling vehicle especially at higher velocity/speeds and when traffic is heavy. The dealership has recommended an engine replacement, not sure if the dealer has been able to reproduce the problem. Currently, the vehicle has only been inspected by a dealership. The flashing engine light first appeared on 06/07/2024, this would be the second time the vehicle stalled (engine shut off) on the same day.

Below is a timeline of the events for your reference: - **December 2022**: Engine replacement was conducted, resulting in the vehicle being in the shop for 7.5 weeks. - **January & February 2023**: The car underwent repairs for damage due to a faulty door and leaking moisture. - **February 2023**: The vehicle was broken into, leading to another round of repairs in April 2023. - **October 2023**: The check engine light activated. Upon taking the vehicle to your dealership, I was informed of a two-month wait for diagnosis and an even further delay for the repair. - **December 2023**: I was advised to leave the car at the dealership for a diagnosis to be conducted several weeks later, with no offer of a courtesy vehicle. - **January 2024**: The dealership diagnosed a low oil code and instructed me to return to the previous service provider to reset it, despite the oil level being adequate. I had cruise control enabled while driving down the highway. When entering a sweeper turn, the steering wheel locked up completely and could only be moved about 1cm either direction. If this had happened on any mild turn this would have resulted in a crash. The steering wheel locked up entirely at 50mph. I was able to slowly get the car to the side of the road utilizing the 1cm of freeplay in the steering wheel. Steering would not return until I restarted the car. No lights appeared on the dash before, during, or after the incident. Component that failed was 56320-K9000 Power Pack Assembly. Dealer replaced this under warranty after the ECU revealed the component had failed. The component is no longer available for inspection. The contact owns a 2019 Hyundai Veloster. The contact stated while driving at approximately 65 MPH, there was an abnormal sound coming from the engine. The contact stated that it sounded as if the engine was revving without the accelerator pedal being depressed. The contact stated that the RPM revved between 5,000-7,000 RPMs but the vehicle was losing motive power. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the vehicle was still losing motive power. The contact was able to stop the vehicle. The contact turned off and restarted the vehicle several times however, the vehicle failed to respond while shifting into drive(D). The contact stated the check engine warning light was illuminated. The contact had the vehicle towed to a local dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and advised the contact that clutch packs 1 and 2 showed DTC codes: P090173 and P090B73. The contact was informed that the clutch packs 1 and 2 along with the clutch actuator and the front brake pads, rotors, and fluid needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure. The failure mileage was 61,307.
