Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. AIR BAGS

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Infiniti I35, 2003-2005 FX35 and FX45, and 2006 M35 and M45 vehicles originally sold, or currently registered, in geographic locations associated with high absolute humidity. Specifically, vehicles sold, or ever registered, in Florida, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Saipan, Guam, and American Samoa, as well as Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas, and Georgia, are included. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.

Risk: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger’s frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL:ACCELERATOR PEDAL

Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain model year 2006-2010 Infiniti M35 and M45 vehicles manufactured April 4, 2004, through October 5, 2010. Over time, the accelerator pedal sensor signal may deteriorate resulting in the output of an incorrect signal causing the engine to go into fail-safe (limp home) mode.

Risk: In this fail-safe mode, throttle valve deposits may cause the engine to stall when the vehicle is coming to a stop or at idle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2020003 21,192 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: This recall is for certain vehicles that had an airbag inflator replaced as a part of an earlier recall campaign. This recall provides a final repair. Long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective Actions: Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to inspect the passenger-front airbag inflator. The passenger-front airbag module or inflator will be replaced as necessary. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

Recall 2017023 51,545 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected.

Recall 2013332 3,452 units in Canada

Engine

On certain vehicles, the accelerator pedal throttle position sensor could fail. A faulty throttle position sensor will return the engine to idle. In certain cases, an abrupt return to idle could result in the engine stalling, causing a loss of motive power which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the accelerator pedal throttle position sensor and reprogram the engine control module.

I UNDERSTAND THAT THERE IS A CLASS ACTION CASE TAKING PLACE IN FLORIDA, INSTEAD OF BOGGING DOWN THE COURTHOUSES SHOULDN'T THE MANUFACTURERS BE REQUIRED TO STAND UP AND DO THE RIGHT THING FOR THE CONSUMERS WHO MADE A PURCHASE IN GOOD FAITH.

SEATS

WELD BROKE ON THE DRIVER SIDE SEAT THAT NOW ALLOWS THE SEAT TO LIFT UP. THIS HAPPENED IN 2015. THE SEAT WILL ALSO NO LONGER MOVE FORWARD.(2020) THIS MODEL DOES NOT HAVE REPLACEMENT GEAR WHICH MEANS THE WHOLE SEAT ASSEMBLY NEEDS TO BE REPLACED SINCE IT CONTAINS THE RAIL TRACK. MY WIFE IS MUCH SHORTER THAN I AM AND CAN NO LONGER DRIVE THE VEHICLE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

MY PCM(POWER/ENGINE CONTROL MODULE, MORE THAN $700) HAS A PROBLEM, IT SHUT DOWN THE FAN RANDOMLY. THE ENGINE BECOMES TOO HOT TO DRIVE. I PARKED IT AROUND 4 HOURS TO COOL DOWN. AC IS ALSO NOT WORKING BECAUSE OF THE PCM. IT BLOWS HOT AIR INSIDE THE CAR. THERE IS NEWS ABOUT THE PCM RECALL, BUT IT DOESN'T SHOW UP IN THE SYSTEM. WHY? ELECTRICAL SYSTEM

CRUSING AT ABOUT 75MPH ON A BUSY FREEWAY , MY CARS RPM BOUNCED UP THEN DROPPED DOWN TO 0 , THE CAR BECAME STIFF AND TURNED OFF. I HAD TO CROSS 3 LANES AT ABOUT 20 MPH AND PULL OVER ON THE SHOULDER. THE CAR WOULD NOT TURN ON UNTIL ABOUT 30 MINS LATER , I HAD TO DRIVE HOME WITH NO POWER STEERING. I LATER FIND OUT IT WAS AN ERROR IN THE ECM AND IT IS AN ELECTRICAL ISSUE

SEATS

WHILE DRIVING THE VEHICLE, I WAS TURNING LEFT AND THE DRIVER SEAT ALL OF A SUDDEN JUST COLLAPSED; FEELING LIKE THE ENTIRE SEAT BROKE/FELL APART. I WAS ABLE TO MAINTAIN CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE AND LUCKILY NO OTHER CAR WAS COMING MY WAY WHEN THIS HAPPENED. I WAS ABLE TO CONTINUE DRIVING BUT HAVING TO SIT UPWARDS ALL THE WAY HOME LOSING SEVERAL INCHES OF VIEWING (BARELY LOOKING AT/OVER THE STEERING WHEEL). I GOT HOME TO CHECK OUT SEAT AND DETERMINED THE SEAT COLLAPSED TO THE FLOOR AND CAN'T BE RAISED; THE SEAT IS UNEVEN TOO. YOU CAN NOW PUSH THE BACK OF THE FRONT DRIVER SEAT UPWARDS AT LEAST 10 INCHES OFF THE GROUND. RESEARCHED THE ISSUE TO SEE WHAT HAPPENED AND DETERMINED THIS IS A COMMON SAFETY ISSUE WITH INFINITI DRIVER SEATS WHERE THE BACK BAR WELD BREAKS PREVENTING THE SEAT FROM BEING RAISED AND NOW REMAINS UNEVEN. THIS IS DEFINITELY A SAFETY ISSUE AS A POSSIBLE REAR END COLLISION/IMPACT WILL CAUSE CATASTROPHIC INJURIES (POSSIBLY DEATH) SINCE YOU WILL BE FORCED UPWARDS INTO THE SEAT BEAT AREA; NOT HOW THE SEAT AND SEAT BELT WERE DESIGNED TO RESTRAIN THE DRIVER OF THE VEHICLE. I HAVE NEVER EXPERIENCED THIS ISSUE WITH A SEAT IN MY LIFETIME. I AM SHOCKED THIS ISSUE IS RECURRING WITH INFINITI, YET NO RECALL ON THIS ISSUE. I AM OFFICIALLY REPORTING THIS ISSUE AND I DID TAKE TO THE INFINITI DEALER WHO DIDN'T OFFER ANY ASSISTANCE WITH FIXING THE ISSUE, ONLY TO ORDER NEW REPLACEMENT PARTS FOR THEIR DEFECTIVE SEAT. I DECLINED THE $2,122.43 REPAIR FOR THIS BROKEN SEAT WELD. IF NHTSA THINKS THIS ISN'T A SAFETY ISSUE; SINCE NO RECALL, I WILL CONTINUE TO DRIVE THIS VEHICLE AND ADVISE MY PERSONAL ATTORNEYS OF SUCH SO IN THE EVENT ANY BODILY INJURY OCCURS, I WILL HAVE RECOURSE.
