From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

The contact owns a 2012 Land Rover Evoque. The contact stated that while the vehicle was parked, the contact noticed fuel on the ground underneath the vehicle. The contact stated that occasionally, there were unknown warning lights that illuminated on and off. The contact noticed a strong fuel odor outside the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, where it was diagnosed with a cracked fuel cap housing. The contact was informed that the fuel cap housing needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer was made aware of the failure but provided no assistance. The contact referenced an unknown recall; however, the VIN was not under recall. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The contact was advised that the repair was not covered under the recall or special program. The contact was advised to contact the NHTSA Hotline to report the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 118,000.

Lexington, KY

POWER TRAIN

2012 Range Rover Evoque suddenly, and without warning died while driving in traffic, and would not restart. It needed to be pushed away from oncoming traffic. A sheriff deputy was summoned to control traffic, as we did this. There were no warning lamps, or messages appearing on the display, both before and after the incident. Currently the car is at a foreign repair facility here in Lexington, KY. The name of the facility is: Scheller Automotive, (859) 225-6277. I spoke earlier with Andy, who stated it was an issue with no compression, which prevented it from being started. He believed it had to do with a dislocated cam gear, which caused a timing failure. According to him, there is a Range Rover service bulletin which they received describing this engine failing, but no recall regarding this issue. He said they now have THREE vehicles in the shop, with this same problem. This catastrophic failure could lead to definite safety concerns, by causing the car to die unexpectedly, without warning, and losing power steering, power breaks, and the possibility of safely exiting vehicle while in traffic.

While driving 2012 Range Rover Evoque the engine light turned on. The vehicle was taken to the mechanical shop where the light was diagnosed as a cracked engine exhaust manifold w/ turbo. Doing research, it was found that the OEM manufacturer knows about the issues of the cracking engine exhaust manifold w/ turbo since the metal that used to make it is a metal alloy. The replacement engine exhaust manifold w/ turbo part that the OEM sells to repair it is made out of steel and is a costly repair. The OEM puts cost over safety.

The contact owns a 2012 Land Rover Range Rover Evoque. The contact stated while driving at 30-40 MPH, the suspension of the vehicle emitted abnormal metallic sounds intermittently. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who lifted the vehicle and diagnosed that an unknown vehicle clamp was lose. The vehicle was repaired; however, the independent mechanic informed the contact that the fuel tank strap and shield were severely corroded and was detaching. The vehicle was towed to the dealer where it was awaiting to be diagnosed. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and informed the contact that they could not assist as the vehicle was out of warranty. The failure mileage was approximately 60,000.

In about Feb 2017, we purchased this vehicle, a 2012 Range Rover Evoque (5 door), from a GMC dealership; it was previously owned. When purchased, an exhaust smell was noticed inside of the vehicle and the vehicle was returned to the dealership for service and inspection into the cause of the odor. It was ultimately transferred to a Land Rover dealership in Scottsdale, Arizona (Land Rover North Scottsdale 18100 N Scottsdale Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85054) where they determined the turbo charger had a crack in the manifold. It was replaced. About one and a half years later, this smell returned and I contacted the dealership about it. I was told their repair warranty was only for one year and they would not repair it. Researching these turbo chargers on my own, I discovered they are commonly failing and people have experienced similar issues with the turbo and exhaust smell. This time, the exhaust odor seems to only last a short time when first starting the vehicle from a cold start, leading me to believe the crack in the manifold is small and seals itself after the manifold heats up and the metal expands. It is an expensive fix to have a dealership do the repairs, over $4000 at last estimate so I haven't made the repairs since it's probably close to what the vehicle is now worth. In researching the turbo, the OEM turbo manifold looks to be made of stainless steel but it is thin looking. Some aftermarket turbos I have found have cast iron manifolds which I may purchase and take on the repairs my self at this point.

WHILE DRIVING ON THE FREEWAY AT ABOUT 80 MPH, THE VEHICLE'S BRAKE MALFUNCTIONED AND I COULDN'T PRESS THE BRAKE PEDAL; IT WOULD NOT EVEN GO DOWN. ON MARCH 24, 2018 AT APPROXIMATELY 11:30 AM I WAS TRAVELING ON THE HIGHWAY (FLORIDA TURNPIKE NORTH) AT AROUND 70 MPH WITH MY WIFE AND CHILD, AND SUDDENLY THE BRAKES STOPPED RESPONDING ON MY LAND ROVER EVOQUE. THE BRAKE PEDAL WAS HARD AND COULD NOT BE PRESSED, IT WOULD NOT RESPOND. WE WERE ABLE TO LOSE SPEED, MERGE TO THE RIGHT OF THE HIGHWAY, AND COME TO A STOP ON THE SHOULDER. NEITHER BEFORE, DURING NOR AFTER THE EVENT, HAD ANY WARNING LIGHTS SHOWING ON THE VEHICLE'S DASHBOARD. WE CALLED OUR DEALER AND THEY SUGGESTED TO HAVE THE SUV TOWED TO THE NEAREST DEALER. WE HAD THE SUV TOWED WITH AAA TO THE DEALER. THE DEALER'S MANAGER DID NOT SEEM WORRIED OR SHOCKED AT THE TERRIFYING EVENT MY FAMILY AND I HAD JUST EXPERIENCED. IN FACT, HE DID NOT EVEN OFFER AN APOLOGY. DID NOT PROVIDE A LOANER OR RENTAL VEHICLE. VEHICLE WAS LEFT FOR THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT TO LOOK AT ON MONDAY. MY FATHER HAD TO DRIVE 211 MILES TO PICK US UP FROM THE DEALER AND DRIVE US BACK. MONDAY THE ANALYSIS CAME BACK AS A TEXT THAT READ: 'THE VACUUM PUMP SEIZED UP AND BROKE ONE OF THE INTAKE CAMSHAFTS. TO FIX THIS WE HAVE TO REMOVE THE TOP PART OF THE ENGINE AND REPLACE ALL PUMP, CAMSHAFT, TIMING GUIDE AND TENSIONER AND ALL THE ONE TIME USE GASKETS AND SEALS. THIS IS A LENGTHY JOB. TO DO THESE REPAIRS WOULD BE $5,532.10+TAX.' (ATTACHED IS THE EMAILED QUOTE WE REQUESTED) WE HAVE PHOTOS, VIDEOS, EMAILS, DOCUMENTS, AND TEXT MESSAGES EVIDENCE OF THE PREVIOUSLY DISCUSSED.

THE REAR AXLE WAS FOUND TO BE DISCONNECTED FROM DRIVETRAIN AND WILL NOT RECONNECT UNDER SLIPPERY CONDITION. ROOT CAUSE: REAR ELECTRICAL DIFFERENTIAL (HALDEX GEN 4) USE PNUEMATIC CONTROLLED CLUTCHES TO CONNECT/DISCONNECT REAR AXLE TO TRANSMISSION FOR TORQUE COUPLING. THE CLUTCH RELIES ON PNUEMATIC PUMP (LAND ROVER PART NUMBER LR075763) TO PROVIDE PRESSURE FOR COUPLING. THE PUMP USE BRUSHED DC MOTOR. OVERTIME, CLUTCH MATERIAL DISSOLVE INTO DIFFERENTIAL FLUID AND CLOGS UP FILTER OF THE PNUEMATIC LINE, CAUSING PUMP RUNNING AT HIGH DUTY CYCLE. THE MOTOR FAILED DUE TO EXCESSIVE HEAT AND BRUSHES DISCONNECT FROM MOTOR WINDING. CAUSING PUMP TO FAIL. FOR REFERENCE, VOLVO AND OTHE VEHICLE MANUFACTURER WHO USE SIMILAR DIFFERENTIAL UNIT (HALDEX GEN 4) REQUIRES SERVICING OF THE DIFFERENTIAL TO PREVENT SUCH FAILURE. LAND ROVER DOES NOT SUCH PROCEDURE.
