I purchased a used 2009 Pontiac G6 for my son less than 7 days ago (3 ). While driving on the highway attempting to exit the ramp, the steering wheel began to get very hard to turn. We nearly crashed! Just yesterday placed the car in park. Although the shifter showed it was in P for park as well as on the dash, the car began consistently moving in reverse. This vehicle is a safety hazard for my child and due to it being a used vehicle Im not protected by a warranty. The 2009 Pontiac G6 recall list states that these issues are known, yet his VIN was not listed I believe it should’ve been. We need contacted ASAP.

The dashboard displayed a power steering warning message and sounded a chime, and the vehicle immediately reverted to heavy manual steering. This sudden loss of power assist heavily increased steering effort, creating an immediate crash hazard. Why an Investigation/Expansion is Necessary: A formal VIN search via the NHTSA recall lookup tool returns 0 active steering recalls for this vehicle. GM narrowly tailored the safety recall population for 2009 G6 models under NHTSA Campaign ID 14V153000 to a build window ending on XXX (per GM Bulletin 14116). However, my vehicle has experienced the exact same part failure and safety risk as vehicles built earlier in 2008. The failure mirrors the dangerous torque sensor and motor assembly defects acknowledged in GM Special Coverage Adjustment #XXX. While driving my 2008 Pontiac G6 Base, I lost electrician power to the vehicle, on my car it utilizes an electric power steering module instead of fluid and a pump. When I lost power to the car the wheel became stiff but when I regained power the steering column while the vehicle was in motion did what I can only describe as "Forced knockback or steering" as when I attempted to tightly turn the wheel or turn at all the car steering wheel would yank the wheel free from my hands and prevent turning. This is extremely dangerous and especially if the car would be at high speeds or speeds needed to reach normal highway travel like 50 to 65 mph.

The vehicle experienced a complete failure of the Electric Power Steering (EPS) motor, matching the identical failure symptoms of NHTSA Recall 15V064000, but this specific VIN is excluded from the campaign. Operating this vehicle without electronic power assist put extreme torsional stress on the manual steering linkage over time. On August 14, 2025, while executing a low-speed turn in a drive-through, the intermediate steering shaft suffered a catastrophic structural failure and completely snapped in half. This resulted in an immediate, total loss of steering control and required the vehicle to be flatbed towed from the scene. The subsequent free-spinning of the steering wheel also tore and destroyed the internal airbag clockspring, disabling the driver's safety restraint system. Photographic evidence of the failure and the resulting tow has been retained. A safety defect file must be opened as this excluded VIN presents a severe public hazard due to the unaddressed factory EPS defect.

When driving the vehicle on the highway the vehicles steering wheel started shaking lightly and then all of a sudden the steering got hard and locked up the power steering and it also put a message on the stereo display saying “power steering”. I was able to pull aside of the highway and turn the car off and then back on. That seemed to reset it but the steering wheel kept shaking on its own. I drove it to the nearest car mechanic and explained the problem. I was told it’s very common on the Pontiac G6 and that there is a recall for this issue. Now unfortunately when we look up the car by VIN it says it doesn’t have a recall but the mechanic and myself have done research and there’s a notice about the Pontiac G6 have this exact same issue about the power steering. The problem is very concerning and is also very consistent as it does not go away unless a specific part is replaced which has been inspected and confirmed to be the exact part that is listed on the recall notice.
