NHTSA investigations into the 2010 Scion XB

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Recalls on the 2010 Scion XB

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2019008 376,282 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, may eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger-front airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. If the airbag inflator ruptures, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants or cause damage to the airbag assembly, preventing its proper function. Safety Risk: If the vehicle is involved in a crash requiring an airbag deployment, the airbag inflator could rupture and create a risk of injury. Corrective Action: Owners will be notified by mail and instructed to take their vehicle to a dealer to have the passenger-front airbag inflator or airbag module replaced. Note: The Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. This recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk. It is expected that all airbag inflators will be replaced before their function would be affected.

Recall 2018524 39 units in Canada

Brakes

On certain vehicles equipped with the accessory Toyota Racing Development (TRD) Brake Kit, the stainless steel braided front brake hoses could fatigue over time, causing them to leak. A sudden brake fluid leak could result in longer braking distances, increasing the risk of a crash causing injury and/or damage to property. Correction: Dealers will the remove the TRD Brake Kit and replace it with a standard equipment brake kit for that vehicle model.

Recall 2015493 315,091 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles, inconsistent application of grease during the manufacturing process could cause the driver's side power window master switch to stick or become inoperative due to electrical contact point wear. This could cause debris to accumulate between the contact points, potentially resulting in an electrical short circuit. If a short circuit occurs, the switch assembly may overheat, produce smoke, melt and/or potentially lead to a fire causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will inspect the driver's power window master switch and apply a specialized grease that inhibits heat build-up, or replace the power window master switch circuit board, as necessary. Note: This is an expansion of recall 2012-338.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

TIRES

This complaint is concerning Bridgestone All Season Tire (BL 205/55R 16). I was driving on the road and all of a sudden the steering wheel was moving back and forth and the right front tire was bouncing uncontrollably while was while driving. My car was pulling to the right as I drove, creating a dangerously unstable driving condition, This issue posed a significant risk not only to my safety but also to others on the road, as the inability to control the vehicle could result in an accident. I pulled over, and saw that the tire was not flat. I was two blocks from the sister store in Halladale. I asked for the manager to look at my wheel as it is under warranty. The manager said it was a bubble in the tread of the tire. I asked the manager since this is a manufacturer defect, can I get tire replaced at no charge. He said he would replace it not for free, but he would prorate the tire. He gave me the estimate and I informed him that since I bought the extended warranty, mounting and balancing was supposed to be free of charge. He says he can't honor the warranty. He not only charged me for the mounting and balancing, but charged me for another warranty! (that they won't honor) The warranty was good for 40,000 miles and this tire only had 16,000 so I felt I was treated unfairly, I called Firestone customer complaint line several times and they said the district manager would call me to rectify my issues, but no one ever called me back. I went to another tire shop to purchase another tire. I took pictures of the bubble on the tire.

SUSPENSION

My Scion XB has a set of dealer installed TRD springs front and rear. The springs in the rear have rusted to the point where I question their resistance to breaking and thus the safety of the car when turning a corner. The springs came from the factory with a coating that has quickly worn off an exposed the bare, untreated metal to excessive rust and corrosion. If one of these springs breaks while driving, then the car could be difficult to control and result in a wreck.
