2024 Toyota Corolla Cross at 50,000 miles Hopkinsville, KY 1 injured

ENGINE

The contact owns a 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross. The contact stated that twice while driving at various speeds and slowing down to make a turn, the brake pedal was depressed but the vehicle failed to slow down as intended and the steering wheel locked up. During the first failure, while the contact’s husband was driving, the vehicle lost power. The vehicle was driven to a gas station and then restarted. The vehicle was then taken to the residence. The contact stated that during the second failure, while the contact was driving at an undisclosed speed, the brake pedal was depressed and the vehicle failed to slow down, and the steering wheel locked up. The vehicle ran over a sidewalk with cinderblocks and stopped sideways in the middle of two lanes. The contact attempted to move the vehicle, but the vehicle lost power. The vehicle was restarted and then moved to the side of the road safely. The contact stated that the seat belt failed to tighten. The contact sustained neck, shoulder, back, and head injuries with dizziness. Medical attention was needed. A Police report was filed, but the information was not available. The vehicle was then towed to a tow yard. The vehicle had not been diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 50,000.

I received the engine maintenance required notification on 7/11. On 7/13, I called my Toyota to make an appt to bring it in at 9 AM. The ran diagnostics for $180 and then the test results said the engine coolant valve is stuck open or closed but either is dangerous because my car could overheat. This is a $850 repair. It sounds like this same part was used on another Toyota suv and the warranty was extended for those so this part needs to be recalled or warranty extended for the 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross as well. I was waiting for this repair to be done for 5 hours total.

While stopped at a red light, the auto stop/start system shut the engine off and it failed to restart automatically. The dashboard showed "Low Power Steering" and "Engine Stopped - Press Brake Firmly to Restart." Pressing the brake did not work. I had to shift to Park and manually restart the vehicle. This has happened twice.

I am reporting Certification Fraud and severe safety violations by Central Florida Toyota. This vehicle was sold as "Toyota Gold Certified" on March 28, 2026, while having an active safety recall (NHTSA 26V203) with no available remedy. Furthermore, a professional inspection revealed a high-voltage hybrid system leak and structural damage (bondo/rust) on engine mounts, indicating a hidden prior collision. The 160-point inspection was falsified to mask these defects. Although the contract was eventually unwound, this vehicle was sold in a lethal condition, violating federal safety standards.

ENGINE

Vehicle: 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross (gas‑powered, non‑hybrid) System/Component: Electrical System → Start/Stop System → Driver Information Display Issue Type: Design Defect / Driver Distraction I am reporting a recurring issue with my 2024 Toyota Corolla Cross (gas‑powered, not a hybrid). The vehicle frequently displays a “Battery Charging” message on the dashboard whenever I come to a stop at traffic lights or stop signs. This message appears even when the vehicle is operating normally and there is no actual charging system problem. According to Toyota documentation and owner discussions, this message is triggered when the auto start/stop system decides not to shut off the engine due to the 12‑volt battery’s state of charge. However, the message is unnecessary, cannot be disabled, and provides no actionable information to the driver. It functions as a non‑critical status notification but is presented with the same prominence as a warning. This creates a driver distraction, as the message repeatedly draws attention away from the road for a condition that is not a fault, not a safety issue, and not something the driver can address. The message appears frequently during normal driving and cannot be suppressed. I believe this is a design flaw in Toyota’s start/stop implementation and dashboard messaging. The system should not display a warning‑style message for normal operating behavior, especially when it cannot be corrected by the driver. I am requesting that NHTSA log this issue as a potential driver‑distraction concern and encourage Toyota to revise the software to eliminate or suppress this unnecessary message.

I was driving on a cold day. When I stopped at a stoplight seeking to make a left turn, the car would not accelerate when I pressed the gas pedal. I looked down and saw the following warning sign "Engine Stopped, Steering Power Low" appear on the dashboard. However, since the car was not in park, it had rolled forward and was close to the being in the nearest lane of oncoming traffic. It was also difficult to steer to avoid creeping closer to oncoming traffic. Although it did not cause an accident, it easily could have. I took the car to several mechanics, because the car is under a CarMax warranty. However, none of the diagnostics revealed anything of concern (no weak battery, lack of power steering fluid, etc.). The mechanics said they had heard about this happening, but were unable to pinpoint any reason for it occuring. This seems like a serious flaw.

ENGINE

VEHICLE: 2022 Toyota Corolla Cross L FWD MILEAGE: 40,000 miles DATE OF FAILURE: [Insert date] DEFECT DESCRIPTION: My vehicle's coolant bypass valve (part #16671-F2010) has failed, causing coolant leaks and triggering error codes. An independent shop diagnosed the issue as a defective coolant bypass valve before I took it to the Toyota dealership for confirmation. SAFETY CONCERN: This is a known defect affecting multiple Toyota models from 2019-2023. Coolant bypass valve failures can lead to engine overheating, potential engine damage, and loss of vehicle control if the engine fails while driving. This creates a serious safety hazard. MANUFACTURER RESPONSE: Toyota issued Customer Support Program 24TE04 covering this exact defect for 2020-2021 Corollas and certain RAV4 models. However, they arbitrarily excluded 2022-2023 Corolla Cross vehicles despite using THE IDENTICAL DEFECTIVE PART (F0010 coolant bypass valve) in all gas models through early 2024. Toyota dealership charged me $99 for a diagnostic to confirm what was already known. The repair quote was nearly $1,000. Toyota Corporate denied goodwill assistance, stating they only provide it to "loyal customers" who have spent significant money on servicing or own multiple Toyotas. CONSUMER IMPACT: This is the same defect that led to the class action lawsuit Barrientos v. Toyota. Toyota settled privately and created CSP 24TE04, but deliberately excluded newer model years with the same defective part. Consumers with 2022-2023 vehicles are forced to pay $900-1,300 out-of-pocket for a manufacturing defect that Toyota has already acknowledged in other model years. REQUESTED ACTION: I am requesting NHTSA investigate why Toyota's Customer Support Program excludes 2022-2023 model years when they contain the identical defective coolant bypass valve. Toyota should be required to extend CSP 24TE04 to cover ALL vehicles with part #16671-F2010 or F0010, regardless of model year.

I purchased a brand-new 2023 Toyota Corolla Cross LE on [XXX], in St. Croix, Virgin Islands, selling price, $31, 500.00 Early July 2025, I started the vehicle, and unexpectedly, multiple lights emerged on the dashboard screen per below, Exhibit 1 - Check Engine - Visit your dealer Exhibit 2 -Drive Start Control Malfunction - Visit your dealer Exhibit 3 - Parking Brake Malfunction Exhibit 4 - Secondary Collision - Brake System Malfunction Exhibit 5- Parking System Malfunction The vehicle was taken to Island Toyota on July 5th. The codes were cleared by removing the battery terminal. Two days later, the warning lights reappeared. After the technician performed diagnostic testing, I received a phone call to pick up the vehicle. The total cost of the ordered parts exceeds $2,000, which includes a computer. This vehicle is under warranty, particular vehicle IS NOT TWO YEARS OLD. This vehicle is a LEMON. I spoke with Carlos Rivera, a Customer Service Agent at Toyota of Puerto Rico. I notified him of this matter via phone calls, and he responded. He stated that his department is the warranty department, solely responsible for ordering parts for vehicles with warranties. He advised me to speak Ms Charla Green, the General Manager for Toyota St. Croix. Not quite sure why she never returns calls and is virtually unfeasible to speak with customers is atrocious. The front desk agents seems to be programmed to let you know Ms Green is not available and the supervisor, Ms Francis, seems uninterested in the daily chronicles with ones vehicle. The Entire department running blind while upper management is collecting hefty salaries. under normal driving conditions on a state highway the Engine Malfunction error displayed on my Multi-Information Display. The error indicated that I find a dealership and have the car inspected. The error would go off then come back during acceleration. after two days at the local Toyota Dealership I was told the Coolant Bypass Valve was stuck in the closed position and it would have caused stalling during acceleration and engine overheating at normal speeds. the dealership replaced the valve and flushed the 100K coolant at my expense of over $800. The issue reappeared moments after I took delivery of the repaired vehicle as I was accelerating onto the highway from their parking lot. this is a well known issue that affects 2019-2023 Camry and RAv4 models and I believe the 2022 Corolla Cross has the same defective part in its engine (all engines come from Japan) no matter where the vehicle is assembled.

I DON'T KNOW EXACTLY THE PROBLEM PART, BUT IT IS UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I ONLY GOT IT FOR ONE WEEK. I DID LET THEM KNOW SINCE THE SECOND DAY I HAD THE CAR, IT WAS KEEPING BREAKING DOWN ON THE STREET. THEY TOLD ME TO KEEP DRIVING IT TO GET COMFORTABLE WITH THE TECHNOLOGY IT HAD. THINKING IS WAS TECHNOLOGY LIKE THEY SAID I KEEP DRIVING IT AND I HAVE EXPERIENCED 3 OCCURRENCES OF A SERIOUS SAFETY CONCERN. THE CAR JUST LOSES POWER IN THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD and picks back up and continues like nothing happened. I could have been hit by another car. I bring the car back to them because I'm scared to keep driving it, my 3 kids have only me as family to support them, I do not want to die and leave them on the street. They have the car back the same week, and they have my $6700 down payment, as well as my trade Toyota CHR for another amount of $3700. The Sales manager told me I have to pay for the loan anyway, not to lose my credit. He said he had already spent his to get my credit okay, so I should pay for the car anyway because the loan is in my name. Or to sell him the car and pay the rest of the money after he values the car. It's unfair to me to lose my $6700 plus the $3700 from the trade plus my credit. I need a car, but not an unsafe one, which was the reason why I spent all this money and ended up with nothing. i need help to get another car or my money back to find another Brand, that's not my first time victim from Toyota.

Car purchased new from Toyota dealer. Picked up [XXX]. Immediately found faulty problems with interior and exterior of car. No quality control or post delivery checks were conducted. Car brought back to dealer the next working day ([XXX]) and spent a week there but repairs were not attempted. Complaint filed with Toyota USA headquarters and request for them to take the car back and give refund on July 1st. Car infotainment system blacks out, dashboard is warped and speakers are coming out of their place on dashboard. Steering wheel is puckering. Toyota headquarters said it will open a case to look into it. The car had less than 100miles on it. On July 26th I log into the Toyota complaints website to add more information and find that the case status is “closed” and no one is reachable to contact at the Toyota headquarters. [XXX] as I am driving the car on a main highway, the car suddenly completely stops without any warning. Engine light is on. “Hybrid system malfunction” and car brakes stop working. My life was threatened by this unreliable dangerous new car and car had to be towed back to dealer. Car never switched on again after that. A service department supervisor at the Toyota dealer (Pauly Toyota in Illinois) mentioned to me at the beginning of July that usually, new cars delivered to the dealer need to be inspected but pauly Toyota does not employ these special inspectors and instead “a regular mechanic does a look over”. He also said this model of Toyota (Corolla cross hybrid) is new and the team is not familiar with its repairs and parts need pre ordering as none can be available for such a new model. I relayed this information to Toyota headquarters on July 1st and again on July 26th but was told both times “Toyota trusts its dealers with the repairs”. My life was put in danger and this was preventable. Toyota USA refuse to do a recall on this vehicle when it is dangerous and not fit to be a car for humans. On [XXX], and again on [XXX], vehicle began beeping while driving on the freeway and flashing the following warning messages: 1) 12-Volt Battery Charging - System Malfunction - Stop in a Safe Place - See Owner's Manual 2) AWD System Malfunction - 2WD Mode Engaged - Visit your Dealer 3) Voltage Abnormality - Steering Power Low - Visit Your Dealer Vehicle shut down and lost power steering while driving on the freeway. My safety was put at risk as I could not easily pull my car over to a safe place due to the car losing power, not turning back on, and power steering turning off. This may have resulted in severe injury or death if I had not been able to eventually pull over. Additionally, the safety of others was put at risk as we were travelling at freeway-level speed, which may have resulted in other vehicles being unable to stop, and consequently crash, if my car had stayed in the freeway lane. Both times I had the vehicle towed to Beaverton Toyota Dealership (Address: 4300 SW Murray Blvd, Beaverton, OR 97005 / Phone: (503) 626-7200) to be inspected and serviced. The first time I was told it was a bad battery cell, which was replaced on 07/26/25. However, the same situation happened after this replacement on 07/27/25. Currently, vehicle is at Beaverton Toyota dealership being inspected. Vehicle was purchased at Wilsonville Toyota (Address: 9155 Boeckman Rd, Wilsonville, OR 97070 / Phone: (503) 582-9040).
