Recalls on the 2014 Toyota Venza

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

21V257000

AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW:CURTAIN

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2009-2015 Venza vehicles. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) wiring may become damaged with regular use of the driver-side door.

Risk: Damaged wires may cause the air bag sensor to become inoperable, preventing the deployment of the side and curtain air bags on the driver side and increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2021723 55,683 units in Canada

Electrical

Issue: This recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at Toyota or Lexus dealerships. On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt. Note: This recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers: C014003034 PK5A408J09 PU14000904 C014003151 PK5A408J13 PU14000905 C014000885 PK5A489J11 PU14000907 C014000888 PK5A489J22 PU14000909 C014000907 PK5A410H00 PU14000911 C014100904 PU14000900 PU14000913 C014100907 PU14000901 PU14003571 C014100911 PU14000902 PK5A489J14 PK5A408J05 PU14000903 Safety Risk: Engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

Recall 2021222 79,852 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain vehicles, the wiring for the airbag sensor in the driver's door could be damaged over time. If this happens, the side airbag and curtain airbag on the driver's side may not work properly in a crash. Note: This problem may cause the SRS warning lamp to turn on in the instrument cluster. Safety Risk: Airbags that do not work properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the driver's door wire harness. It will be replaced, if necessary.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

AIR BAGS

I received a safety recall notice (21TA01) from Toyota for non-deployment of airbags. I scheduled an appointment with Kendall Toyota in Eugene, Oregon. They called me and told me they had to keep my car overnight because they had to special order the part (part # 04001-0590T). The SRS Warning Check Airbag system has been flashing on my dashboard when I have a passenger in my car. The day I dropped the car off they sent me a text trying to add $2000+ in additional services of which I declined as my car only has 89k miles on it and these services were suggested before 125k miles. The next day I receive a text saying my car is ready for pick up. So I went and I picked up the car and the only thing the advisor said to me was the car was "all set". The next time I had a passenger the SRS Check Airbag systems warning light comes on again. So I went back and the service advisor said he had to go talk to his manager. He comes back to tell me that they never actually did the replacement on the vehicle and the warning message is a separate issue that I now have to schedule another appointment to diagnose. Yet the dealership reported to Toyota corporate, who has opened an audit into this incident, that the repair was COMPLETED. When typing my VIN number into this site it also said 0 recalls not completed which is false. The paperwork says no replacement yet says the part is on special order. I think this dealership is committing fraud and certainly were not forthcoming to me about the fact that no work was completed. It seems as though they were selectively speaking to pull one over on me.

STEERING

The vehicle started to exhibit a popping or clunking sound in the steering Column after 125,000 miles. Was told it was not dangerous and continued to drive while albeit was still distracting. At 165,000, the sound became extremely loud at hwy speeds of 70-80mph and cause the steering wheel to shake and pull to the left. Took to mechanic who told me to take it to dealer. Dealer immediately knew what the problem was but was told I would have to replace the entire steering column because there was no way access the bushing otherwise. It was 15$ EPS bushing/damper that had literally worn down to nothing cause the power steering motor to vibrate on the steering column when going over bumps and driving at high speeds. Altering the alignment and causing a slow leak of hydraulic power steering fluid. This apparently is a fairly common issue with 2009-2015 Toyota Venza

STEERING

I WAS STOPPED AT A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND COULD FEEL THE STEERING WHEEL TIGHTEN LIKE IT WAS LOCKING UP. WHEN THE LIGHT TURNED TO GREEN I MADE A LEFT HAND TURN AND HAD NO POWER IN THE STEERING WHEEL. I MANUALLY TURNED WHEEL AS HARD AS I COULD AND DRIFTED ACROSS ROAD WITH VERY LITTLE CONTROL BECAUSE IT WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT TO TURN STEERING WHEEL. I PULLED/ DRIFTED THE CAR OFF THE ROAD IN A DIAGONAL DIRECTION BECAUSE IT WAS TOO DIFFICULT TO TRULY MAKE A DIRECT TURN OR PULLOVER. THE POWER STEERING INDICATOR LIGHT CAME ON. I TURNED VEHICLE OFF AFTER I DRIFTED TO A SAFE SPOT AND WHEN TURNED IT BACK ON THE STEERING WORKED. I DROVE TO A REPAIR SHOP BUT NO DIAGNOSIS HAS BEEN MADE YET. THIS HAPPENED ON A MAJOR ROAD BUT NOT HIGHWAY. I SUSPECT THIS MAY BE RELATED TO THE TOYOTA SAFETY RECALL F0J (F1J) ELECTRIC POWER STEERING (EPS) ELECTRIC CONTROL UNIT (ECU) CERTAIN TOYOTA VEHICLES 2014-2015. MY VENZA WAS NOT ON THE RECALL LIST BUT MAYBE IT SHOULD BE BECAUSE THE STEERING PROBLEM WAS EXACTLY AS DESCRIBED IN RECALL. Consumer stated power steering assist loss was again on June 2, 2021.

I TOOK IT TO A PRIVATE MECHANIC THAT TOLD ME THAT THE NOISE WAS COMING FROM THE REAR BUSHINGS, WHICH ARE PLASTIC (MOST OF THE TIME THE BUSHINGS ARE MADE OF METAL) INSIDE OF THE HUB. I WAS CHARGED TO FIX THE WRONG THING BY THE DEALERSHIP, AND THE PROBLEM WAS STILL NOT FIXED. WHY DID THEY USE A PLASTIC PART, JUST TO SAVE MONEY? THIS WILL BE THE LAST TIME I BUY A TOYOTA. THE VEHICLE STILL MAKES NOISE, AND IS HEATING UP MY TIRES AT AN ALARMINGLY FAST RATE.

AIR BAGS

IN NOVEMBER 2018 A WARNING LIGHT ON THE DISPLAY INDICATED A MALFUNCTION OF THE AIRBAG SYSTEM. I TOOK IT TO THE DEALER WHERE I PURCHASED THE VEHICLE AND HAD IT DIAGNOSED. THEIR ANALYSIS INDICATED THAT THERE WAS CORROSION ON THE LEFT FRONT SENSOR AND THEY RECOMMENDED REPLACEMENT OF THE LEFT FRONT SENSOR AND THE WIRING HARNESS. THIS WIRING HARNESS ENCOMPASSES ALMOST THE ENTIRE ROOF. THEY ESTIMATED THE TIME TO REPLACE THE HARNESS AND SENSOR WOULD BE ABOUT 10 HOURS AND THE COST WOULD BE APPROXIMATELY $4000. THIS CAR HAS NEVER BEEN IN AN ACCIDENT NOR HAS IT BEEN STRUCK BY LIGHTNING. IT HAS ALSO BEEN KEPT IN A HEATED GARAGE THE ENTIRE 4 YEARS. TO MY KNOWLEDGE A WIRING HARNESS IS NOT A WEARABLE ITEM.

THE POWER DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS IN TOYOTA VEHICLES FROM THIS YEAR MODEL ARE DEFECTIVE. THEY ONLY LAST ABOUT A YEAR OR TWO BEFORE THEY STOP WORKING. REPLACING THE ACTUATOR IS A VERY TIME INTENSIVE PROCEDURE AND THE COMPONENT IS NOT CHEAP EITHER. OUR VEHICLE HAS HAD THREE OF THE FOUR DOOR LOCK ACTUATORS FAIL IN LESS THAN THREE YEARS. WE PURCHASED THE VEHICLE NEW AND THE ACTUATORS FAILED UNDER NORMAL USE. I HAVE ANOTHER OLDER TOYOTA WITH WELL OVER 200,000 MILES AND THE ACTUATORS WORK JUST FINE. THIS TYPE OF FAILURE ON A SIMPLE EVERYDAY COMPONENT IS UNACCEPTABLE. A QUICK SEARCH AROUND THE INTERNET WILL REVEAL THAT THE ACTUATORS FAILING IS A COMMON THEME AMONG NEWER TOYOTA VEHICLES. THIS DEFECTIVE PART EXISTS IN ALMOST EVERY TOYOTA CAR AND SOME SUV AND TRUCK MODELS. TOYOTA IS UNABLE TO PRODUCE A RELIABLE DOOR LOCK ACTUATOR.

THE DUST IS A DIRECT RESULT OF THE AIR CONDITIONING'S EVAPORATOR FLAKING OFF SMALL PIECES. CARSPEC'S HEARD MULTIPLE EXPLANATIONS AS TO WHY THE EVAPORATOR DOES THIS: THE PROTECTIVE COATING ON THE EVAPORATOR FLAKES OFF, THE EVAPORATOR'S ALUMINUM CORRODES, ETC. THE BLOWER TAKES THESE BITS OF DEBRIS AND PUSHES THEM THROUGH THE VENTS INTO THE CABIN. THE SOLUTION TO FIXING THE PROBLEM IS, UNFORTUNATELY, TO REMOVE THE ENTIRE DASH, CRASH BAR, MOST OF THE FRONT HARNESS, AIR/HEATER BOX AND REPLACE THE EVAPORATOR CORE WITH AN UPDATED PART ' AN EXPENSIVE PROPOSITION ' WHILE CLEANING ALL OF THE VENTS THAT MAY HOUSE RESIDUAL DUST. ALUMINUM DUST CANNOT BE GOOD FOR LUNGS OF OCCUPANTS OF VEHICLE AND SHOULD BE FIXED AT NO COST TO VEHICLE OWNER.

I'M FROM VANCOUVER, BC, CANADA. I WAS DRIVING BACK, FROM VANCOUVER AIRPORT OUTLET STORES, ON HIGHWAY 99, WITH AROUND 90 KM/H AND WHEN I APPROACHED THE INTERSECTION WITH OVER-PASSING CAMBIE ROAD, I HEARD LIKE AN GLASS EXPLOSION ON THE CAR ROOF, AND BY REFLEX I DUCK AND COVER BUT I DID NOT STOP THE CAR IN THE MIDDLE OF THE INCOMING TRAFFIC. I MANAGED TO SLOW DOWN AND MOVE TO THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY THEN STOP THE CAR COMPLETELY. WHEN GOT OUT AN LOOK I SAW MY MOBILE SUNROOF BROKEN IN LARGE PIECES, LIKE SOMEONE CUT IT I SQUARE LIKE FORMS. I WAS VERY LUCKY THAT MY SUNROOF OVERHEAD PROTECTION WAS CLOSED, AT THE TIME OF THE INCIDENT, OTHERWISE ALL THOSE BROKEN SUNROOF PIECES HAD FALLEN IN MY HEAD ... AND AT 90 KM/H ... MY REACTION WOULD HAD BEEN DIFFERENT, PROBABLY LEADING TO A SERIOUS ACCIDENT. SINCE IT WAS LONG WEEKEND, THE COMPANY WHICH SOLD ME THE CAR, AND REPRESENT TOYOTA (DESTINATION TOYOTA BURNABY) WAS CLOSED, SO I CALLED THE INSURANCE COMPANY AND FILE A CLAIM ([XXX]). I FINALLY MANAGED TO GET IT INTO THE REPAIR SHOP (SAME COMPANY WHICH SOLD ME THE CAR) AND AFTER THEY CHANGE THE SUNROOF, THEY TOLD ME THE ELECTRICAL PART WHICH CLOSES THE MECHANISM IS NOT WORKING PROPERLY, AND THEY NEED TO CHANGE THAT TOO. IT'S ALMOST 1 MONTH AND A HALF AND THEY STILL WORKING ON THE CAR, A 2 YEARS OLD CAR!!! INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6).

MICE ARE GAINING ACCESS TO THE INTERIOR CABIN OF MY VEHICLE. I TRAPPED 2 MICE OVER THE LAST 2 DAYS. THE TOYOTA VENZA IS PARKED IN THE SAME GARAGE AS MY PREVIOUS CAR, A 2004 FORD ESCAPE. THE ESCAPE WAS PARKED THERE FOR 11 YEARS AND I NEVER HAD THIS ISSUE. THEY ARE GAINING ACCESS THROUGH THE AIR FILTRATION SYSTEM. IT IS EASY TO SEE THAT THERE ARE OPENINGS NOT COVERED BY SCREEN OR MESH THAT ARE LARGE ENOUGH FOR MICE TO GAIN ACCESS TO THE INTERIOR OF THE VEHICLE. MY DEALERSHIP TELLS ME THAT ALL CARS HAVE THIS ISSUE AND I WILL BE CHARGED FOR ANY WORK ON THIS PROBLEM AS THEY CONSIDER IT TO BE A "MAINTENENCE ISSUE" WHEN IT IS CLEARLY A DESIGN FLAW. WHY SHOULD THEY CHANGE THE DESIGN? THEY CAN MAKE LOTS OF MONEY LEAVING IT AS IS SO CONSUMERS HAVE TO PAY OUT OF POCKET TO TRY TO FIX THE PROBLEM. MICE ARE DISEASE CARRYING VERMIN. ALLOWING THEM TO HAVE ACCESS TO MY VEHICLE MAKES IT, IN MY OPINION, UNSAFE TO DRIVE. I HAVE AN APPOINTMENT WITH KARI TOYOTA IN SUPERIOR, WI ON WED, NOV 4 TO ADDRESS THE PROBLEM.

ON 10/08/14 UPON MAKING A LONG TURN OFF OF THE INTERSTATE ONTO A SERVICE ROAD AT LESS THAN 45 MPH, THE PANORAMIC ROOF SHATTERED. THE VEHICLE WAS TAKEN TO THE LOCAL TOYOTA DEALERSHIP IMMEDIATELY TO BE REPLACED UNDER WARRANTY. WE WERE FIRST TOLD DEFECTIVE GLASS. AFTER 6 MONTHS, THERE IS A POPPING SOUND FROM THE ROOF WHEN MAKING TURNS OR GOING OVER THINGS LIKE RAILROAD TRACKS AND THE ROOF HAS BEGUN TO LEAK. TOOK THE VEHICLE IN FOR THE LEAK REPAIR ON 8/7/15. AS OF 8/17/15 THE ROOF IS LEAKING AGAIN AND THE POPPING SOUND IS GETTING WORSE AND SOUNDS LIKE ANOTHER BREAKAGE IS NEAR. WERE TOLD THAT THIS WAS AN ISSUE THAT TOYOTA COULDN'T FIX DUE TO A LACK OF STRUCTURAL SUPPORTS IN THE ROOF WHICH ALLOWS FOR EXCESSIVE CHASSIS FLEX AND ADVISED TO LIVE WITH IT IF POSSIBLE. THIS IS A MAJOR SAFETY CONCERN THAT TOYOTA NEEDS TO ADDRESS. OTHER VENZAS HAVE ALSO HAD THE SAME ISSUE.
