Recalls on the 2015 Toyota Venza

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

21V257000

AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW:CURTAIN

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing (Toyota) is recalling certain 2009-2015 Venza vehicles. The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) wiring may become damaged with regular use of the driver-side door.

Risk: Damaged wires may cause the air bag sensor to become inoperable, preventing the deployment of the side and curtain air bags on the driver side and increasing the risk of injury during a crash.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2021723 55,683 units in Canada

Electrical

Issue: This recall is for certain block heater kits installed on certain vehicles or sold as accessories at Toyota or Lexus dealerships. On certain vehicles, the engine block heater cable may not have enough heat protection and could be damaged by high temperatures. If this happens, the cable could short circuit while plugged in, and cause the wiring to overheat or melt. Note: This recall only affects the following block heater/cord part numbers: C014003034 PK5A408J09 PU14000904 C014003151 PK5A408J13 PU14000905 C014000885 PK5A489J11 PU14000907 C014000888 PK5A489J22 PU14000909 C014000907 PK5A410H00 PU14000911 C014100904 PU14000900 PU14000913 C014100907 PU14000901 PU14003571 C014100911 PU14000902 PK5A489J14 PK5A408J05 PU14000903 Safety Risk: Engine block heater wiring that overheats or melts could create the risk of a fire. Corrective Actions: Toyota recommends that you should stop using the engine block heater immediately. Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to disable the engine block heater. For some vehicles, the corrective actions for this recall are under development. For others, a new engine block heater cannot be installed, and the owner will receive a refund of the purchase price of the engine block heater.

Recall 2021222 79,852 units in Canada

Airbag

Issue: On certain vehicles, the wiring for the airbag sensor in the driver's door could be damaged over time. If this happens, the side airbag and curtain airbag on the driver's side may not work properly in a crash. Note: This problem may cause the SRS warning lamp to turn on in the instrument cluster. Safety Risk: Airbags that do not work properly could create an increased risk of injury in a crash. Corrective Actions: Toyota will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the driver's door wire harness. It will be replaced, if necessary.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

Cedar Hill, TX Crash

UNKNOWN OR OTHER

On 10/24/22, I was stopped in traffic at the lower end of a hill. This was in Arlington, TX on Lamar St. near Collins traveling east. Although I was using my brakes as we were at a red light, the car started accelerating forward. It would not stop with further brake usage or trying to put the car into park position. I hit the car in front of me gently. Not seeing any damage, and because the other driver did not feel the impact, I did not report the incident to the insurance company. I do not know if it was a brake problem or other problem. I recently purchased the car after my Toyota Camry was totaled at the end of July 2022. However, that car had a similar problem in another accident that was reported to my Allstate agent.

MY VEHICLE WAS NOT LISTED UNDER THE RECALL FOR AIRBAGS. YET, YESTERDAY I WAS INVOLVED IN A FAIRLY SERIOUS T-BONE COLLISION THAT AFFECTED THE ENTIRE FRONT END OF MY VENZA AND NO AIRBAGS WENT OFF. IT WAS A CITY STREET INTERSECTION AND BOTH VEHICLES WERE MOVING ABOUT 30 MILES PER HOUR. NEITHER THE DRIVERS OR PASSENGER SIDE DOORS WOULD OPEN FROM THE IMPACT SO WHY NO AIR BAGS?...UPDATED 01/25/16

The navigation and radio system will cut off and restart that warning. This loses critical settings and distracts drivers from attention to the road. If you’re using navigation, it’s gone if you are listening to instructions from an external source connected to the system, it’s gone. This radio is definitely available for inspection. This is a frequent occurrence on most any trip at any time multiple times per trip. This is definitely a safety hazard, if traveling in heavy traffic and unfamiliar places.

AIR BAGS

Sunroof leaking into front driver & passenger pillars with airbags. Dealership quotes $6k to fix, but they didn’t know where / how it’s leaking!! There are no drain lines in this model, so it’s just a leak into the air bags plain and simple. This is a manufacturer issue- if no drain lines / weep holes, then why do you have to replace a $6k sunroof to fix an $50 seal / gasket? Very Unsat. Others are having the same issue. Saw 13 others with similar or same issue on NHTSA website…Toyota dealer was charging me $1,000 to look at it and tell me , yeah, there is a leak! Thats why I brought it to you! This is the panoramic sunroof model. Very unsafe!

ENGINE

The engine is consuming oil at an alarming rate. Didn’t reach my normal 5000 miles for an oil change and the oil stick was bone dry. Its put me and my family at risk because its the main reason the car is driving. No it has not been reproduced. No. Yes there was a warning lamp almost a year ago when it first happened where the engine burned most of the oil leaving nothing in the engine.

AIR BAGS

Last December my airbag light came on. I took it to Minot Chrysler Center and Toyota Center and they told me the wires for the airbag under the drivers seat were frayed and needed to be replaced. They also had to replace the harness because they said that too was not working. I had it fixed. Three weeks ago the light went off I made an appointment right away and today they told me it was the same issue and had to replace the wires on the passenger side. I called Toyota and they told me it was up to the discretion of the tech. I called the tech at the Chrysler Center and she told me that they couldn’t do that because they would have to file a report and then deal with Toyota. I was not happy with that response and I said oh so you are telling me that’s too much work and I am on my own. I just ended up paying for it twice now. The drivers side was $594.00 and today’s charges were $485.00. This is a safety issue and should be addressed

SEATS

Extremely uncomfortable drivers side and passenger headrests, causing my head and neck to be pushed forward. This causes me back and neck pain, pushing you in a position to have chronic neck/back pain and very bad posture. I’ve seen many complaints online, including many newer makes and models. It sounds like the new feature is supposed to reduce whiplash, in the chance of an accident, but if people take their headrests off or flip them backwards then it’s a bad design. I am 5 feet 5 inches tall, and I’ve heard of this affecting others of a similar height, please consider redesigning

DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AND COMING TO A STOP SIGN THERE WAS A SUDDEN EXPLOSION...IT SOUNDED LIKE A TIRE EXPLODED BUT LOUDER. I WALKED TO THE VEHICLE THAT HAD STOPPED BEHIND ME AND ASKED THEM IF THEY HAD SEEN ANYTHING HIT MY CAR AND THEY SAID NO. MY SUNROOF CONTINUED TO SHATTER AS I DROVE HOME. FRIGHTENING SITUATION!
