NHTSA crash tests

The agency crash-tested this model year itself. These are its own photographs and star ratings.

These stars come from the pre-2011 crash test programme. NHTSA rebuilt the programme for the 2011 model year and states that ratings either side of that change are not comparable — so do not read these against a 2011-or-newer car's stars.

When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

Recalls on the 2007 Volvo S80

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

20V378000

SEAT BELTS:FRONT

Volvo Cars of N.A., LLC (Volvo) is recalling certain 2008-2016 V70 and XC70, 2007-2016 S80, 2011-2018 S60 and V60, 2016-2018 S60 Cross Country, 2014-2020 S60L, 2009-2015 S80L, 2009-2016 XC60 and 2015-2018 V60 Cross Country vehicles. The flexible steel cable that connects the seat belt to the front outboard seating positions may fatigue over time, causing the seat belt to not secure the occupant in the event of a crash.

Risk: An unsecured occupant has an increased risk of injury in the event of a crash.

11V378000

STEERING:HYDRAULIC POWER ASSIST:HOSE, PIPING, AND CONNECTIONS

VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007 S80 PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM MARCH 8, 2006, THROUGH MAY 16, 2007. THE POWER STEERING RESERVOIR RETURN HOSE MAY HAVE BEEN INCORRECTLY ROUTED, WHICH CAN RESULT IN INCREASED PRESSURE IN THE POWER STEERING SYSTEM. THE POWER STEERING RETURN HOSE MAY BURST AT THE STEERING GEAR DUE TO THE INCREASED PRESSURE, RESULTING IN A LOSS OF POWER STEERING FLUID.

Risk: THE DRIVER MAY EXPERIENCE A SUDDEN LOSS OF POWER STEERING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

10V566000

EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:NAVIGATIONAL SYSTEM(GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM)

VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH GARMIN 760 PORTABLE GLOBAL POSITIONING SYSTEM (GPS) UNITS BECAUSE THE BATTERIES ON THOSE UNITS MAY OVERHEAT.

Risk: AN OVERHEATED BATTERY COULD LEAD TO A FIRE.

10V335000

TIRES:PRESSURE MONITORING AND REGULATING SYSTEMS

VOLVO IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2007-2010 S80 VEHICLES FOR FAILING TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARD NO. 110, "TIRE SELECTION AND RIMS." THE TIRE AND LOADING INFORMATION LABEL AND A PAGE IN THE OWNER'S MANUAL CONTAIN INCORRECT MAXIMUM PERMISSIBLE INFLATION PRESSURE AND THE TIRE PRESSURE MONITORING SYSTEM (TPMS) SOFTWARE HAS AN INCORRECT TRIGGER LEVEL.

Risk: THESE VEHICLES DO NOT MEET THE REQUIRED SAFETY STANDARDS.

09V139000

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:SOFTWARE

VOLVO IS RECALLING 12,303 MY 2007-2008 S80 AND V70 VEHICLES. THE DIAGNOSTIC SOFTWARE IN THE CENTRAL ELECTRONIC MODULE (CEM) MAY CAUSE A MALFUNCTION OF THE WINDSHIELD WIPER FUNCTIONALITY. IF THIS CONDITION OCCURS, THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS MAY NOT OPERATE WHEN ACTIVATED; OR IN CERTAIN CASES THE WINDSHIELD WIPERS MAY ACTIVATE WHEN NOT SWITCHED ON.

Risk: OPERATING A MOTOR VEHICLE DURING INCLEMENT WEATHER CONDITIONS WITHOUT FUNCTIONING WINDSHIELD WIPERS CAN INCREASE THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2020298 24,089 units in Canada

Seats And Restraints

Issue: On certain vehicles, the flexible steel cable that attaches the seat belt to the outside of the front seats may weaken over time. As a result, the seat belt could detach. Safety Risk: A seat belt that detaches in a crash could create an increased risk of injury. Corrective Action: Volvo will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to replace the front-outboard seat belt anchors.

Recall 2011270 299 units in Canada

Steering

On certain vehicles, the power steering reservoir return hose may have been incorrectly routed (pinched or kinked) during vehicle assembly. This could increase pressure in the power steering system, which could cause the return hose to burst. Loss of power steering fluid could cause a loss of steering power assist, which may result in a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect the reservoir return hose and, if necessary, replace and reposition the hose. If the reservoir return hose is routed incorrectly, the steering gear return hose and the power steering fluid reservoir will also be replaced.

Recall 2010396 87 units in Canada

Accessories

On certain vehicles, there is a possibility of overheating issues of batteries in the Garmin nüvi® 760 when certain batteries manufactured within a limited date code range are used in certain Garmin nüvi® 760 models with a specific printed circuit board (PCB) design. The interaction of these factors can, in some circumstances, increase the possibility of overheating, which may lead to a fire. Correction: Dealers will direct customers who have an affected unit to the Garmin Web site, which explains how to verify if their units are involved and includes procedures to follow for product exchange.

Recall 2009124 549 units in Canada

Electrical

On certain vehicles, the diagnostic software in the Central Electronic Module (CEM) may cause a malfunction of the windshield wiper functionality. If this occurs, the windshield wipers may not operate when activated; or in certain cases the windshield wipers may activate when not switched on. Should this occur during a rainy/snowy day, it could increase the risk of a crash, causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will install updated CEM software.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

VISIBILITY/WIPER

These generation of Volvo p3 platform cars had a defective windshield seal that was not the best from the factory. Many cars of this generation (S60, S80, XC90, etc) have had the seals break, causing extreme water leakage as mine has had. And the possibility of the windshield falling out. Mine is bad enough that pushing it lightly from the inside to create a significant gap in the window and the frame of the A pillar. There are many forums and reports of this exact problem and Volvo has yet to voluntarily recall these cars. Many people have reported it to many dealers, but all say they cant replace them. This problem definitely puts the driver and other people in the cabin in danger. And no warning lights go off in relation to the problem. I appreciate your consideration.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

Warning light on dashboard indicated right front headlamp out. Repair shop removed and replaced original component with new component. Internal inspection of light assembly revealed missing insulation(photos attached) on wiring harness causing a short circuit which also ruined the headlight igniter and control module. Shop stated that this issue is NOT uncommon with Volvo lighting systems. The current concern is the same condition is present in the left(driver) headlight and could cause a short and fire within the headlight assembly. Correspondence with Volvo resulted in no resolution of the issue and lack of concern for the reliability of installed components or possible safety concern for their product.

EXCESSIVE RUST IS FORMING ON MY FRONT SUBFRAME AND IN SOME PLACES HAS RUSTED COMPLETELY THROUGH. SMALL PERFERATIONS WERE NOTICED AT REPAIR FACILITY AND I WAS TOLD THAT IT WILL NEED TO BE REPLACED. IT CANNOT BE WELDED/REPAIRED. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM WITH THE 2007-2010 VOLVO S80 V8 WHICH VOLVO REFUSES TO RECALL AND WILL BE AN EXTREMELY COSTLY REPAIR. IT ALSO MAKES THE CAR UNSAFE TO DRIVE SHOULD THE REPAIR NOT BE MADE.

SEVERE SUBFRAME RUST DUE TO EXCESSIVE HEAT FROM THE EXHAUST ON THE V8 MODELS OF THE VOLVO S80S ONLY. DEALER SAID THE EXCESSIVE HEAT WILL MELT THE PAINT OFF, CAUSING RUST TO ATTRACT TO THE SUBFRAME. THE SUBFRAME IS A CRITICAL COMPONENT TO THE CAR, UNFORTUNATELY ALTHOUGH VOLVO HAS SAID THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM ON THE V8 MODELS, THEY WILL NOT DO ANYTHING TO FIX THE PROBLEM. THIS IS THE ONLY PLACE MY VEHICLE HAS RUST, AND THE CAR IS UNDERCOATED YEARLY.

FRONT SUB-FRAME WHICH HOLDS ENGINE/TRANSMISSION/FRONT SUSPENSION HAS SIGNIFICANT EXTERNAL AND INTERNAL CORROSION. ADVANCING CORROSION WILL EFFECT STEERING AND ENGINE MOUNT CAUSING A LOSS OF CONTROL. CAR PARKED WHEN NOTICED, 5/14/2019. BELIEVED TO BE PROBLEM WITH ALL VOLVO S80 WITH V8 ENGINE.

THE FRONT SUBFRAME OF MY VEHICLE WAS FOUND TO BE UNSAFE BY THE VOLVO DEALER IN MY AREA. CORROSION HAD GREATLY DETERIORATED PARTS OF THE FRAME WHICH SUPPORTS THE FRONT SUSPENSION, STEERING AND ENGINE. I WAS TOLD THAT REPLACEMENT WAS THE ONLY OPTION TO AVOID A POTENTIALLY CATASTROPHIC FAILURE WHILE DRIVING. CLOSE EXAMINATION REVEALED SIGNIFICANT LOSS OF STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY OF THE SUBFRAME. VOLVO SERVICE STAFF TOLD ME THIS WAS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR THIS MODEL S80 V8.

WINDSHIELD LEAK. AFTER A RECENT RAIN STORM (APRIL 2017), THE PASSENGER SIDE CARPETING WAS SOAKED. TOOK THE CAR TO MY LOCAL VOLVO DEALERSHIP AND THEY VERIFIED THE WINDSHIELD SEAL WAS LEAKING (UNSOUND) AT THE TOP. THEY REFERRED ME TO A LOCAL AUTO GLASS COMPANY WHO TOLD ME THEY HAVE SEEN THIS ON SEVERAL VOLVO'S WHERE THE SEAL WAS NOT PROPERLY BONDED AT THE FACTORY. I HAVE SEARCHED FOR RECALLS, BULLETINS,ETC. BUT HAVE NOT FOUND ANY INFORMATION REGARDING THIS DEFECT. IF IN FACT IT IS A FACTORY DEFICIENCY I BELIEVE I SHOULD BE REIMBURSED FOR THE REPAIR OR REPLACEMENT OF THE WINDSHIELD.
