NHTSA crash tests

The agency crash-tested this model year itself. These are its own photographs and star ratings.

These stars come from the pre-2011 crash test programme. NHTSA rebuilt the programme for the 2011 model year and states that ratings either side of that change are not comparable — so do not read these against a 2011-or-newer car's stars.

When owners complained

A spike years after the car went on sale usually means a part wearing out on schedule across the whole fleet — the kind of pattern no single owner can see from inside their own car.

AIR BAGS

2005 CHEVROLET ASTRO VAN SUSTAINED MINOR FRONT END DAMAGE IN AN ACCIDENT AND BOTH FRONT AIRBAGS ONLY PARTIALLY DEPLOYED. WE'VE NEVER SEEN AIRBAGS ONLY PARTIALLY DEPLOY. THE PASSENGER SIDE CONSOLE SPLIT AND THAT AIRBAG IS VISIBLE FROM THE 1/2 TO 1 INCH SEPARATION OF THE SEAM IN THE CONSOLE. THE DRIVERS SIDE BAG IS MORE VISIBLE BUT CLEARLY DID NOT FULLY INFLATE. CONSEQUENCES: WE ARE CONCERNED THAT THIS MIGHT BE A DEFECT IN THE VEHICLE AND ARE CONCERNED ABOUT FUTURE ACCIDENTS IN THIS TYPE OF VEHICLE - WE HAVE CONCERNS ABOUT FUTURE LIABILITY THAT MAY ARISE. CORRECT FAILURE: WE WILL REPLACE AIRBAG SENSOR AND AIRBAGS WITH MANUFACTURER PARTS.

TIRES

TRAVELING SOUTH ON CALIFORNIA INTERSTATE 5, AFTER TEJON PASS IN SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, THE RIGHT REAR TIRE OF OUR 2005 CHEVY ASTRO LS MINIVAN JUST BLEW OUT. THE TIRE WAS BRIDGESTONE DUELER (SIZE P215 70 R16 99S). I WAS DRIVING WITHIN THE SPEED LIMIT OF 65 MPH. THE FREEWAY ROAD SURFACE WAS CLEAN AND THE WEATHER WAS SUNNY AND CLEAR. THERE'S NO DEBRIS OR ROAD HAZARD ON THE FREEWAY. I CALLED EMERGENCY ROADSIDE ASSISTANCE TO REPLACE THE BLOWN OUT TIRE WITH THE SPARE. I ENDED UP BUYING A NEW REPLACEMENT TIRE. I WAS ABLE TO SAVE ONLY A SMALL PORTION OF THE BLOWN OUT TIRE. FORTUNATELY, THERE'S NO INJURY. THE INCIDENT HAPPENED JULY 20, 2007 ABOUT 1:30 P. M. THE WHOLE FRONT PART OF THE TIRE WERE SHREDDED TO PIECES.
