Recalls on the 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

United States — NHTSA

24V756000

AIR BAGS:SIDE/WINDOW:CURTAIN:INFLATOR

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, GMC Sierra 1500, 2018-2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, and GMC Sierra 2500, 3500 Crew Cab trucks. The left or right-side roof-rail air bag (RRAB) inflator end cap may detach from the inflator or the inflator sidewall may rupture.

Risk: A separated inflator end cap or inflator rupture can allow compressed gas to escape, resulting in the end cap or other components being propelled into the vehicle, increasing the risk of injury or crash.

23V047000

FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, and GMC Sierra 2500, 3500 vehicles equipped with a dual fuel tank option. The rear fuel tank may collapse and prevent the fuel pump from transferring fuel to the front tank, resulting in an engine stall.

Risk: An engine stall increases the risk of a crash.

21V496000

EQUIPMENT:ELECTRICAL:ENGINE BLOCK HEATER

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2017-2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500 and 2017-2019 GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles equipped with a Duramax diesel 6.6 liter engine and an optional engine-block heater cord. An electrical short-circuit may occur in the engine-block heater cable or in the terminals that connect the heater cable to the block heater.

Risk: An electrical short-circuit can increase the risk of a fire.

19V328000

ENGINE

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 4500, 5500 and 6500 vehicles and 2017-2019 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 vehicles and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles equipped with Duramax 6.6 liter diesel engines and an optional engine-block heater. The engine block heater cord or the terminals that connect the heater cord to the block heater may short circuit and fail.

Risk: A short-circuit may damage the engine components and increase the risk of fire.

17V567000

SEAT BELTS:FRONT:RETRACTOR

General Motors (GM) is recalling certain 2017-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 and 3500 and GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 trucks. The front seat belt retractor assemblies were built with the incorrect torsion bar. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."

Risk: The seat belt retractors may not perform as intended during a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

THE ENGINE DIED, AND I LOST POWER STEERING AND BRAKES. AFTER WRESTLING THE TRUCK TO THE SIDE FO THE ROAD, A PASSERBY DROVE BACKWARDS IN TRAFFIC TO ALERT ME THAT THE TRUCK WAS BURNING. IF NOT FOR HIM, WE MIGHT NOT HAVE GOTTEN OUT IN TIME. FLAMING FUEL WAS DRIPPING DOWN FROM IN THE CHASSIS, DRIVER SIDE, IN FRONT OF REAR WHEEL, APPROXIMATELY WHERE THE FUELING RECEPTACLE WAS. BY NOW, IT WAS LEAKING WITH THE INTENSITY OF A SMALL SHOWER HEAD. THE ENTIRE TRUCK BURNED TO THE GROUND RAPIDLY. THE TRUCK WAS TWO WEEKS OLD, WITH LESS THAN 1000 MILES. IT WAS UNMODIFIED. I PURCHASED MY TRUCK BRAND NEW. I LOVE THIS TRUCK BUT I FEEL LIKE THERE MIGHT BE A PROBLEM OR SOMETHING GOING ON. MY VEHICLE WAS IN MOTION WHEN THIS STARTED. I WAS DRIVING ON 02-16-2019 WITH MY BRAND NEW BABY GIRL JUST 7 WEEKS OLD WHEN SUDDENLY SOMETHING STARTED TO SMELL REALLY TOXIC AND IT FILLED THE ENTIRE TRUCK WITH WHAT SMELLED LIKE DIESEL FUMES. SMELLS LIKE SOMEONE DUMPED 10 GALLONS OF FUEL INSIDE MY TRUCK. THERE IS NO SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER AND IT IS FREEZING OUTSIDE. MY BABY IS SCREAMING AND GETTING EXPOSED TO THESE NITROGEN DIOXIDES IN LARGE AMOUNTS AND BREATHING IT IN. MY BABY'S CLOTHES AND BLANKETS SMELL LIKE FUEL, MY CLOTHES SMELL LIKE FUEL. MY SEATS SMELL LIKE FUEL. THE INSIDE OF MY TRUCK IS POISONING MY BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTER AND NOW I AM PANICKING BECAUSE THERE IS NO SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER. I DROVE FOR 20 MORE MINUTES BEFORE I FOUND A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OVER. I CALLED A FRIEND TO COME GET MY BABY. I CONTINUED TO DRIVE THE TRUCK HOME. I THINK BABY IS OK BECAUSE I GOT HER OUT RIGHT AWAY. I HAVE BEEN SICK EVER SINCE. MY HEAD HURTS AND I CAN NOT TALK RIGHT. I DON'T FEEL GOOD. I CALLED THE CUSTOMER SERVICE NUMBER 1 800 222 1020 AND THEY TOLD ME TO GO TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP FOR HELP. WHEN I ARRIVED THEY TOLD ME THAT THEY COULD NOT HELP ME BECAUSE IT WAS SATURDAY. THEY LEFT ME STRANDED. I HAVE ALWAYS LOVED CHEVY TRUCKS AND HAVE BEEN A LOYAL FAN AND LONG TIME CUSTOMER BUT THIS INCIDENT COULD HAVE KILLED MY DAUGHTER IF I HAD NOT BEEN SO CLOSE TO TOWN. I WILL NEVER EVER FEEL SAFE IN THAT TRUCK AGAIN. EVEN IF CHEVY DOES FIX IT. THIS WAS THE SCARIEST THING THAT HAS EVER HAPPENED TO ME.

POWER TRAIN

2018 Chevy Silverado 2500Diesel Duramax (63,000 miles & Garage kept) While pulling 37' camper on flat terrain, Push Rod bent and broke in half - violently shaking and missing; Engine was ruined. Engine light did not appear until after it started shaking. Luckily this happened before crossing over steep mountain where we would not have been able to get off road or control vehicle and camper behind us. Truck was towed to Chevy dealership; had to wait until 10 days to learn extent of damage. Repair cost was going to be $26,000 and though our truck's trade in value was $37000 before this event, we were offered just $12000 for trade in. Though we had been led to believe that a Chevy Duramax was highly regarded for durability and longevity, we decided to purchase a RAM Truck. NO MORE CHEVYS for us! Contacted Chevy Customer Assistance but because we traded, they would not offer any financial assistance because we took the dealership's offer and traded the next day. We just couldn't stand a $26000 hit on an 8 year old vehicle and had to absorb that amount with our trade in.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM

The truck kept going into limp mode and when taken to the dealership it was found to have metal in the fuel. According to the report from the dealership they stated that this indicated the injection pump had come apart internally and sent metal throughout the system. It has since been repaired at a high cost to myself. The generation of truck made before mine had a recall for the same thing and I feel that they have not fixed the problem or it wouldn't have happened to my truck. Seems like a manufacturing defect. When in limp mode the truck does not operate at the speed limit required for highway driving. There was no indication prior to the failure.

Rear defroster seemed to short circuit and over heated causing my back window to break. There was no warning, no light that alerted me to this going on. I had it inspected by a local Chevy dealership and they have indeed confirmed that it short circuited and caused the damage to my rear window. They also removed the fuse to prevent anything further from happening and told me it could have completely caught on fire.

POWER TRAIN

70,000 mile complete transmission failure despite being serviced on-time, as per the guidance. Failure happened while driving and it became dangerous to try to maintain highway speed. Quoted $8390 to replace by the local Chevy dealership and quoted 4-6 weeks delivery for backordered parts. This is an unacceptable situation that GM and other manufacturers have artificially manufactured. They design everything to the bare minimum to save fractions of a cent per part, and then they intentionally make the parts unavailable and then the dealership pushes you to trade the broken vehicle in at a massive loss just so you can get back on the road in a newer, more expensive vehicle. This sort of behavior is causing immense financial harm to American families.

I’m have 1-2” dead space in steering. It is hard to stay in lane on highway as when a road dip takes extra movement keep straight. I was told this is normal but had dealer change steering box. Replacement helped a lot but truck is starting to get the 1-2” of play once again. Seems like similar issue to 2016 model year.

While hauling a trailer I received a warning tone and looked down to read the message, "reduced engine power", and the service engine light appeared all at the same time. The engine shutoff at the same time I received the warnings and didn't allow me to safely pull off the road.. I lost power steering, power braking, and controlling the vehicle and trailer while coasting to the sholder was difficult. Fortunately it was early in the morning and I was only traveling 35 mph on a straight road, and no other vehicles were on the road. If I was on an interstate traveling 55+ mph or on a curvy road it would have caused an accident or worse. I was very fortunate. This was the first time I experienced this problem and hadn't received prior warning messages or lights. The truck would not restart and the truck and trailer were towed to the dealership. The diagnosis was a failed "Fuel Pump Control Module." After waiting several weeks the replacement Fuel Pump Control Module did solved the problem. I kept the failed Fuel Pump Control Module and is available for inspection. Please investigate thoroughly! I was extremely fortunate the part failed when it did and I was able to walk away unharmed.

For the last year the vehicle has been in the shop at the dealer for a rancid chemical smell in the cab of the truck that causes a burning to the eyes and lungs. It gets worse when it's hot outside. The smell is there even when the vehicle is not running. The dealer cannot find the source of the smell and has turned the vehicle back over to us with no solution.
