We are reporting a suspected thermal runaway incident involving our recently purchased used 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 and have significant concerns regarding the vehicle's safety. **Vehicle Information** * Purchased XXX, 36,662 miles * Clean inspection and no accidents per Carfax **Incident Timeline – XXX** Between 6:00 and 6:30 PM, while traveling northbound on [XXX] just past the [XXX] exit in [XXX], the vehicle struck a white piece of road debris that appeared flat, similar to Styrofoam (video available). There was no immediate loss of vehicle function. [XXX] The vehicle was then moved to the driveway for inspection after a low coolant warning appeared. Damage to the underside near the driver's side and observed blue coolant leaking from the area. The coolant reservoir under the hood was empty. Based on online guidance advising against driving a vehicle with a coolant leak, we decided to leave the vehicle parked in our garage overnight and arrange a flatbed tow to a Hyundai dealership the following day. The garage door was closed, and the vehicle was **not charging**. At approximately 8:10 PM, a burning smell was detected inside the home. Upon opening the door between the house and garage, smoke was observed. The family immediately evacuated, and XXX was called at 8:12 PM. The fire department arrived at approximately 8:18 PM and found the garage filled with smoke. At 8:30 PM, firefighters removed the vehicle from the garage. At 8:35 PM, flames were observed beneath the vehicle. Firefighters applied water directly to the fire until 11:00 PM, after which the vehicle was removed. SAFETY DEFECT REPORT: 2025 HYUNDAI IONIQ 5 HIGH-VOLTAGE BATTERY FAILURE On Sunday, July 5, 2026, at approximately 24,000 miles, the vehicle suddenly displayed a critical dashboard safety alert notifying me of an electrical propulsion failure and explicitly instructing me not to drive the vehicle. The sudden failure entirely disabled the vehicle's driving power and compromised its operational safety. The vehicle was removed from my possession via a flatbed tow on Wednesday, July 8, 2026, and delivered to Southern States Hyundai. On July 11, 2026, the dealership service technicians diagnosed a total high-voltage traction battery pack failure. The dealer opened Repair Order 9651579, and Hyundai Corporate approved a full warranty replacement of the $28,000 battery system. The vehicle remained out of service due to this safety defect for 21 cumulative days until the component replacement was completed on July 29, 2026.

Over 14 months of ownership, this vehicle has suffered four distinct, electrical and charging failures. On June 6, 2026, the vehicle experienced a total ICCU failure. All lights in the car went dark and lost all power without warning, creating an immediate and life-threatening hazard to myself . The vehicle had to be towed. Three prior repair attempts for charging and 12V battery failures were made by the dealer/. They replaced the ICCU, the car currently runs.. The replaced ICCU has not been redesigned and as a result the car is unsafe to take out on the highway or on a long drive.

The car entered a failed ICCU state (not confirmed until the car was looked at by Hyundai at the dealership) while I was driving down to Ano Nuevo regional park. Received a warning on the dash that said that electrical system has failed and to pull over. It restricted me from going over 10 mph on Highway 1 and I eventually pulled over the side of the road and got towed to the dealership. The car is home with me now but I do not feel safe driving this vehicle after all of the reports of ICCU failures. I am very concerned this will happen again and in a more dangerous situation. I was also stranded by this car in March 2026 with a dead battery.

Complaint Summary: Mandated federal safety recall remedies performed on my vehicle have directly induced a cascading, critical safety failure of the vehicle's high-voltage propulsion management system. My 2022 Hyundai IONIQ 5 (VIN: [XXX]) was brought to an authorized dealer on XXX at 200,224 miles to complete safety recall Campaign 272 / NHTSA Recall 24V-204 (ICCU Software Update and Fuse Inspection). After receiving this software flash, the vehicle's electrical charging system failed (DTC P0D5C00), requiring a full hardware replacement of the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU) on XXX. 142 miles after the physical replacement of the high-voltage ICCU, the vehicle displayed an emergency battery malfunction message on the dashboard. Diagnostic scans reveal active fault code P1BC700 in the Battery Management System. The manufacturer's dealership is now charging $1,909.77 out-of-pocket to replace the Power Relay Assembly (PRA).The current recall modifications for the E-GMP platform are failing to safely mitigate high-voltage current spikes. The electrical strain or servicing procedure required by the recall has directly compromised the adjacent power relays. This creates a severe safety hazard, leaving drivers exposed to subsequent high-voltage component failure immediately after completing mandated federal safety recalls. This is an EV . We use the regenerative braking to slow down. This car has both a front and rear dash cam. The car is about two and a half years old and has about 20,800 miles. We were approaching a red traffic light with several vehicles stopped in front of us. My partner was driving and had slowed to 8 mph, with her foot off the accelerator, advancing slowly towards the car in front of us when the vehicle experienced unanticipated, rapid acceleration. With quick reflexes, she was able brake hard and avoided a collision. Ten minutes later she was parking at our house, going 4 mph and it did it again, coming within four feet of the building. Neither time was she touching the accelerator, but the car accelerated like the accelerator was pressed to the floor. This is very dangerous.

On June 13, 2026, my 2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 experienced a sudden and dangerous propulsion failure while in active motion. The vehicle had approximately 9,447 miles on it and was at 58% battery charge at the time of the incident. The vehicle was leased in January 2025 and has been serviced exclusively at the Hyundai dealership. While driving with two occupants, the vehicle abruptly lost all ability to accelerate. The dashboard displayed a critical warning: “Stop vehicle and check power supply” along with a red battery icon. This failure occurred without warning and immediately placed us in danger of being struck by surrounding traffic, as the vehicle could no longer maintain speed or respond to throttle input. I was able to coast the vehicle off the roadway. Shortly after stopping, the vehicle issued an additional warning stating that auxiliary functions were draining the battery. Within moments, the vehicle shut itself down completely. This left both occupants stranded in extreme heat (over 100°F) with no air conditioning, no ventilation, and no ability to restart or power the vehicle while waiting for rescue. This created a serious risk of heat-related medical distress in addition to the initial roadway hazard. The vehicle’s complete loss of propulsion followed by a full electrical shutdown represents a severe safety defect. At no point should an electric vehicle with more than half a charge and fewer than 10,000 miles lose propulsion during active driving or shut down all systems while occupants are inside. This incident posed a significant risk of collision, injury, or heat-related harm. I am requesting that NHTSA investigate this failure mode, as it may indicate a broader defect affecting the propulsion or battery management systems of the Hyundai Ioniq 5. The vehicle is currently at the Hyundai dealership undergoing diagnostics and they confirmed they had difficulty jumping it to move it from where the tow truck had parked it on arrival.

OnXXX, as we approached what I call the 6 o’clock position of a round-about in [XXX], we had braked almost to a full stop (0-5 mph) to wait on the car ahead of us to enter the round-about when we felt increasing movement. Despite braking, to wait on that car, our car with increasing speed started shoving that car into the circle. Fortunately, he was able to drive away from us, but that car had been damaged on the back and right side. With that obstacle out of the way, our car rapidly and exponentially increased speed - all while we were fully braking. Two witnesses said they saw our brake lights as we sped along. We hit the curb as we approached the 12 o’clock exit, and that turned us so that we crossed both lanes of the road and headed towards the far sidewalk and storefronts. When we hit that curb it pushed us diagonally to face the street again. Hard to estimate but we must have been doing 50 mph when we hit a very large brick planter and we finally were wedged to a stop when we slammed in between two vehicles parked parallel to the sidewalk. The motor ran for a few seconds after we stopped, and finally quit on its own. We KNOW the brake was applied the whole time; there were no visual or audible alarms from the car as we entered “UNINTENDED ACCELERATION”. Despite the incredibly strong impact (our car has been deemed totaled) the front air bags did not deploy. Only the driver’s side curtain deployed. The bumper of the parked transport van on our front left was damaged, and the small SUV on our front right was deemed totaled. No people were in those two parked cars; the first car was hit at the initial slower speed so those people were not injured. By some grace, no pedestrians were in our path or they would surely have been killed. The driver of our car (my husband) was miraculously not injured, but CT scans and x-rays showed I had several contusions and a fractured tibia that will require surgery due to brake, propulsion, no air bags. When I started the car at 10pm , a loud pop was heard and warning lights on the dashboard indicated an electrical problem. I turned off the radio and anything extra that could use up power; during the next 45 minutes I took surface streets instead of the freeway to drive 22 miles back home and speed was limited to 40 mph. The next day the same warning lights were on the dashboard and speed was limited to 20mph; car lost power after 1 block. Car was towed to the dealer, where an ICCU failure and blown fuse in the engine was diagnosed by dealership and replaced.

Car has only 3307 miles and incurred a DTC P1A9096. This meant the vehicle only had power from the 12 volt battery, not traction battery. Luckily, the event happened 3 miles from home and we were able to just make it. Next day upon calling for flatbed tow service, the car generated an additional DTC P05616. 12 volt battery was exhausted and nothing functioned on the car. Had to then call for a different tow truck with dollies. The failure of the ICCU (Integrated Charging Control Unit) was a cause for recall on earlier year's models. This is a major safety issue as failure of the ICCU leaves you stranded with an inoperable vehicle where you cannot even lock the doors. Currently, the vehicle is at the dealer (Lithia Hyundai of Anchorage) for repair.

Vehicle was parked in closed garage overnight. In the morning I tried to start the car and it was unresponsive. key fobs, digital keys, NFC cards none of them were able to open the car. Used a physical key to open the door, and then tried to turn the car on, nothing worked all screens remained black and car was unresponsive. AAA confirmed that the 12V battery was fully dead. When they jumped the vehicle we heard a pop in the car, which is a known ICCU failure indication. The car still turned on and was drivable. I got it to the dealership safely and they confirmed that the 12V battery was fully dead and car only turns in if jumped. They also confirmed that the ICCU had a failure as well and they are going to need to replace the entire battery pack/ICCU assembly.

The ICCU failed on my 2025 Ioniq 5 within 3 months of ownership and only 811 miles on it. The weather that morning was slightly chilly but not cold. I turned on the car and put it into reverse and after backing up only a couple feet, I heard a pop and the "Check Vehicle Electrical System" message and warning light came on. I had not DC fast charged the car since owning it and had only charged it on level 2 chargers at about 9.6kw to 12kw. The car was not charging the night before the issue occurred and had not been on the charger for several days previously as the battery level was around 70%. There were no issues or symptoms before prior to the failure. The car was towed to the dealership and the ICCU and high voltage were replaced under warranty. This is a major issue with the car and it keeps on happening to eGMP platform cars. The same issue happened with my 2023 Ioniq 5. Hyundai is not providing any information to consumers if they have actually identified the cause of the frequent failures or have manufactured a new part that corrects the manufacturing defect. Please direct Hyundai to issue a statement if they have found a fix or there needs to be a major recall until they identify and correct the underlying problem with the ICCU.

Car indicated 12v battery was critically low and that I should stop safely. I was just starting it in a parking lot. This is a classic ICCU failure and the car is up to date on all recall updates. The car requires manual key unlocking for outside access at this point, and the rear hatch is only unlockable using the manual release mechanism which is recessed into the rear hatch and needs the key. The back two doors cannot be opened at all, from either direction and the handles don't work when the electrical system has failed and the child lock was engaged accidentally when it happened. This legitimately terrifies me for anyone traveling with back seat passengers who need quick exit. There isn't one.

The car went into 'limp' mode, which allowed me to drive no faster than around 25 mph. Fortunately, I was within a half mile of my home, so I was able to do a U turn and return home. I called a tow truck, which towed the car to the local Hyundai dealer in Lebanon, NH. This was a Saturday in February, 2026, so dealer inspection did not occur until the following Monday.
