STEERING

Driving at highway speeds, the front end feels unstable. It feels as if the tires are jumping around and will move the car to the right or left. It is difficult to maintain control. I had it into the dealer shortly after I bought the car to complain about what I thought was a front end alignment problem. They didn't think there was an issue until they got it into the shop. They said afterwords that it WAS OUT OF LINE. But their fix did not hold, so I went in again for the one year maintenace and mentioned the problem, but they said it was not out of line. Well, The problem still exists. Something serious is wrong and needs to be fixed.

STEERING

While driving on the freeway with adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assistance on heading east into the morning sun my car suddenly attempted to veer strongly to the left as I exited the shadow of an overpass. I was able to stop the lane assist because I had a firm two handed grip on the steering wheel. Even with the firm grip and attentive driving I nearly left my lane as the wheels suddenly and strongly jerked to the left.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Fremont, CA Crash 2 injured

STEERING

Going thru a parking lot to a drive thru at a fast food place, rounding a small curve at a very low speed then trying go to 1 st lane out of 2 lanes the car suddenly went out of control and accelerated to center pole. The pole was a barrier protecting the support pole for the canopy. The car front center hit the pole so hard that the front collapsed. The hood buckled in the center and the pole went half way to the windscreen. The air bags did not deploy. The driver got hit with steering or something in the chest and caused lot of pain for about 10 days. No internal injury was detected. The car was totalled. The car did not complain of any incident except the dash reported something binding when tried to back off from the pole. The car repair company declared it as write off including the auto insurance company. Police was called and they did not take any data no other investigation was done. We feel the car computer malfunctioned and caused the accident.

While driving 70mph on the highway in Phoenix, multiple emergency lights illuminated on the dashboard and I lost all control over the steering wheel and braking mechanisms. The car has been serviced regularly with multiple check-ins focusing on battery efficiency.

2024 Hyundai Ioniq 5 Forestville, CA

STEERING

Vehicle steering or at least power steering failed catastrophically. Started with some electronic sounds at extremes of turning radius but subsequently failed completely and rendered car undriveable. Hyundai repair center attributed this to "excessive dirt and dust" or some external force, but was unable to substantiate or demonstrate any damage to parts they say need replacing. Ultimately this remains undiagnosed with regards to cause but dealer clearly identifies need to replace P/S motor and rack and pinion assembly. Insurance inspection documents no sign of external involvement in the failure. No warning lights/messages. Problem is repeatable. While failure would have been a safety risk at higher speed, it went from "noise at edge of turning radius" to "cannot steer the car" at a point in time where the car was moving at low speeds.

STEERING

While using Highway Driving Assist/Lane Following Assist on Interstate highways, lane markings frequently disappear on overpasses and in construction areas. When this occurs, lane-centering assistance silently disengages. The only indication is a small dashboard icon changing color. There is no audible warning, steering wheel vibration, or other prominent alert. The vehicle may begin drifting before the driver realizes steering assistance has been lost. Observed repeatedly on Massachusetts highways, including I-495 and I-290. This creates an unexpected and serious safety issue, potentially resulting in an accident. I had this happen during a recent trip, and multiple times the car wandered towards an adjacent lane. It caused me to lose confidence in the system, and to maintain constant vigilance, gripping the wheel tightly at all times. Had I not done so, I’m sure I would have had an incident. Who watches the dashboard all the time? The driver's eyes are supposed to be on the road ahead, especially when approaching an overpass. Had they incorporated an audible or tactile alert, this would have greatly increased the driver’s awareness and potentially avoid a crash. Since the system obviously knows when it has disengaged, it would be a simple matter to implement this. My preference would be steering wheel vibration.

This is the second time the ICCU failed. The car is waiting for a full EV battery replacement. The first time the failure happened on 12/11/25, at 9,165 miles, the alert happened just before the car came to a full stop as we were driving along the road near our house, it was very difficult to steer, we were sort of stopped in the road and had to get it towed. The second time the alert came on 4/16/26 and we were able to get it to the dealer.

STEERING

I was driving on a busy highway at a high but legal speed. For a few seconds the vehicle appeared to reset. I lost control and the screen went blank. It was a miracle I did not hit another vehicle. I contacted the dealer and they stated unless it was happening frequently - there is nothing they could do. I spent hours on the phone with the dealer attempting to schedule an appointment, they stated their EV person was not available. I contacted Hyundai customer service. They ignored me for months. They assigned me a contact person - but she would never return my calls. I called the main support number and started over after several months. This representative collected all my info - title, purchase receipt, etc - but then closed my case after a couple calls. They totally ignored the concern.

STEERING

The emergency steering will engage at random times. The car makes a loud noise, a light on the dashboard illuminates, and the car will try to drive into another lane. This happens at least once a week, and it has never happened when there was another car around, so I wasn't about to get into a collision. It has happened when there is construction and the lane markers are unclear, when the road is a little wet and other times I can't explain. I have always been able to shove it back into the lane I want to be in, but this also seems incredibly unsafe. It could drive me into any sort of situation involving other cars or off the edge of a road. I've Googled and I am not alone in experiencing this problems. I reported this twice to Hyundai customer service.

The vehicle was returned to me after a manufacturer-authorized high-voltage battery replacement that was completed on December 10, 2025. Immediately after pickup, the vehicle began exhibiting safety-related issues. I experienced abnormal and hard steering operation, repeated low coolant warnings, and battery management system (BMS) and electrical warning messages. These warning messages appeared immediately after the repair and before the vehicle was driven by me. I returned the vehicle to the dealership multiple times for the same issues. During the final visit, the dealership retained the vehicle for approximately 12 days. After this inspection period, I was informed that the vehicle had underbody damage affecting the coolant system and high-voltage battery and that the damage was likely caused by road debris. The issues began immediately after the battery replacement and involved safety-related systems including steering, coolant, and the high-voltage battery. The vehicle was returned with unresolved warning messages related to these systems. I am concerned that the vehicle was released after a major battery repair in an unsafe condition and that the affected systems may not have been properly inspected or repaired prior to release.

After a loud bang (fuse blown) the car was unable to move just before I was about to turn into an intersection. The ICCU failed for the second time, all warranty repair completed prior to the incident, first failure occurred in 2024. Both failures occurred close to a when the lead acid battery failed and needed replacement. When the car was stopped and started again, I was able to drive the car slowly to the dealership located less then 1/4 mile away. The car behaved as if there was no power steering but the car still jerked the wheel around to try to put me back into the driving lane presumably because I was driving in the emergency lane. Failed component was ICCU Module 36400-1XAA0. Vehicle was unsafe because I was unable to move while about to turn into an intersection. After stopping and starting the car, the was drive-able bit mildly erratic when attempting to move the car to a safe location (out of the left turning lane). Problem was identified, confirmed, and repaired by dealer under warranty for second time. Component and vehicle inspected by dealer. Failed part sent back to manufacturer. This incident occurred without any prior warning or indication by the vehicle. There were no active recalls on the vehicle at the time of the incident.

Shift gear was not engaging then i noticed the knob was slightly sticking out so I pushed it back in. The car changed gear then but it happened again a couple days later but this time the knob fell off while i was trying to push it back in. Brought to the dealers for inspection in September within a week after the problem started. Followed up twice now with no update as to when it will be fixed, I was told they will need to order part and that the entire shift gear will need to be replaced. They didn’t seem to be concerned about the safety of driving the vehicle around meantime. My husband used my car for a long trip while i was out of the country and he said the shift gear fell again. If it gets loose the gear does not engage.

NHTSA Vehicle Safety Complaint Vehicle Information: Year: 2023 Make: Hyundai Model: Ioniq 5 VIN: [XXX] Mileage: Over 137,000 miles 15 States Driven: AZ, TX, GA, CA, MI (with damage here primarily) Complaint: My 2023 Hyundai Ioniq 5 has experienced persistent and severe safety failures since delivery in January 2023, including: Complete power and control loss at highway speeds Repeated BMS/12V failures (even at 30% state of charge) Nonworking rear brake lights at night for over one year False-alarming and nonfunctional parking sensors Interior wear faster than normal; more These failures have created life-threatening hazards for me and my children, who regularly ride in the vehicle. The vehicle is under an active federal safety recall, which under 49 U.S.C. § 30118–30120 requires dealers and manufacturers to repair recalled vehicles promptly, without regard to profitability or cost. Despite repeated written requests, Pedder Hyundai (Poway, CA) refused to perform recall repairs, obstructed resolution, blocked corporate contact, and threatened to tow the vehicle illegally at my expense within 48 hours, demonstrating reckless disregard for consumer safety and federal law. A police report documenting criminal endangerment, conversion, and aggravated consumer endangerment is pending, and the lender of the vehicle has been notified of breach of contract. These issues appear systemic, affecting multiple vehicles of this model, and have resulted in: Frequent, unexpected towing with surprise expenses and downtime Significant risk of injury or death due to power/control loss Repeated failures despite warranty and recall obligations I request NHTSA investigate immediately, ensure recall repairs are completed promptly, and take any action necessary to protect public safety. STEERING

I am filing this complaint to report a serious safety defect involving my 2022 Hyundai Ioniq 5. The vehicle experienced a sudden failure of the Integrated Charging Control Unit (ICCU), which caused the car to completely shut down and lose power while in motion. My family member, who was driving at the time, stated that the car lost power and shut off without warning on the road, creating an extremely dangerous situation. Thankfully, they were able to pull over without incident, but this type of malfunction could easily result in a collision, injury, or worse. I later discovered that this issue is part of a widespread ICCU failure affecting Hyundai Ioniq 5 and other Hyundai/Kia EVs. My vehicle has been at the dealership for over a month, and Hyundai has informed me that the part required to repair the vehicle is backordered for 2–3 months, leaving me without my primary mode of transportation. This issue is not only a reliability concern but a serious safety hazard that warrants immediate investigation and intervention. A vehicle that completely loses power while driving is unacceptable, especially for a relatively new vehicle under warranty. I urge the NHTSA to investigate the ICCU failures in Hyundai Ioniq 5 vehicles and determine whether a broader mandatory recall is needed due to the loss of motive power and serious safety risk. Many owners are affected, and delays in repair parts are putting consumers in unsafe situations.

The first time the "aux" battery was not charging completely. 2nd time pretty much same issue, they claimed to have performed a software update, 3rd time warning lights came on "Problem, check electrical system" ..something like this. They told me to bring the vehicle to the dealership. After reading the problems stem from the ICCU, I decided to call them to ask if I should tow it in, due to all the warnings. After this we could not even get into the vehicle or drive it. Took us and the tow driver 4 attempts to get it out of the garage, down driveway and it had to be pulled onto the flat bed. They agreed and said that if there were any tow fees, they would pay them. Furthermore they said they would supply a vehicle to use while mine was being repaired. This was on Jan 25th, they still have not returned my vehicle, claiming they are waiting on parts, I've had to call them to check on it, this week NO contact what so ever.

1) This is the second occurrence of this issue within the past 12 months. While driving, my EV displayed various blinking lights and a “Check EV Connection” message, followed by a “12v Battery Critical” warning. The entire system began shutting down in the middle of the road. I managed to pull over before the car completely shut off. 2) This malfunction posed a significant safety risk to me and others. The rapid deceleration and uncertainty of an imminent shutdown almost caused an accident, either from other vehicles crashing into me or from my inability to stop in time, potentially hitting another car. I have faced this life-threatening situation twice within a year due to the same issue. 3) The problem was confirmed by my dealership less than a year ago, and my car is currently being towed back to the dealership for re-inspection of the same issue. 4) The vehicle and its components have not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or other parties for the current situation. However, the manufacturer issued a recall for this problem last year AFTER my initial report, incident, and repair. They claimed to have fixed the faulty issue or replaced the necessary parts, when my vehicle was repaired less than 12 months ago. Despite this, I am experiencing the same critical problem again. 5) During the incident, my entire panel started blinking with a “Check EV Connection” message, followed by a red warning sign indicating a 12v Battery Critical Failure warning. The system then went black, and the panel continued to blink white and black consistently while parked. The car cannot be started or moved.

Hyundai Ioniq5 acquired new in September 2023 - mileage at the time of incident 10,800 miles - Michelin Primacy AS 235/55 R19 - OEM tires installed by the manufacturer. Front tire started to go off balance causing steering wheel vibrations and shaking that increased with speed - car was not drivable above 55MPH due to excessive shaking and vibrations of steering wheel - this presents safety concern as it may lead to loss of control and excessive wear and tear on other suspension / wheel components. I took the vehicle to a local tire shop (Town Fair Tire in Norwalk CT - authorized dealer of Michelin tires) - got wheels rotated, balances and alignment adjusted. The issue persisted - on the second visit tire shop dismounted one of the tires and discovered internal foam band unglued and clumped on one side of the tire causing off-balance. The shop recommended removal of the foam material and rebalancing of the tire to correct the manufacturing error. I contacted Hyundai and reported this as a safety issue as well.

My vehicle was fully charged. About 1 mile after leaving my house, I received a warning message on my display (vehicle electrical system error or similar). Shortly after I received another message that power was reduced, then finally, "stop driving". I pulled into the nearest driveway and called roadside assistance. At that point, the vehicle was COMPLETELY dead. No lights or power whatsoever. I could not activate the car to shift into neutral. I had my vehicle towed to the dealership. They said it was due to a faulty ICCU and fuse. After about a week they were able to replace the ICCU, fuse and update the software.
