NHTSA investigations into the 2012 Jaguar XF

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Fuel Tank Flange Leak

In October 2012, Jaguar Land Rover LLC (JLR) submitted a Defect Information Report (DIR) to NHTSA describing a defect condition that could result in pressurized fuel leaks around the fuel supply line connection on the upper surface of the fuel tank assemblies of approximately 4,152 model year (MY) 2010 Jaguar XF vehicles equipped with 5.0L engines and manufactured between April 2009 and January 2010 (Recall 12V-521). The DIR indicated that the fuel system operating pressures of 5.0L gasoline engine XF vehicles may exceed the design specification under certain conditions, which may result in cr...

Recalls on the 2012 Jaguar XF

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Vehicles not originally sold or ever registered in either Zones A or B are not subject to this safety recall. These vehicles are equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temper

AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:DRIVER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE

Jaguar Land Rover North America, LLC (Jaguar) is recalling certain model year 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2015 XF vehicles manufactured February 6, 2008 to October 20, 2014. In the affected vehicles, the driver frontal air bags may be missing a chemical enhancer required for the second stage deployment, resulting in the second stage deploying improperly in certain crashes.

Risk: An air bag that inflates improperly increases the risk of injury.

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE

Jaguar is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 XF vehicles equipped with a 5.0L gasoline engine. The affected vehicles may have a fuel tank fuel outlet flange that may crack.

Risk: The cracked flange may result in fuel leakage onto the ground. This leaking fuel, in the presence of an ignition source, may result in a vehicle fire.

11V604000

EQUIPMENT:OTHER:LABELS

JAGUAR IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 XF VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM SEPTEMBER 7, 2011, THROUGH NOVEMBER 24, 2011, FOR AN INCORRECT CERTIFICATION LABEL. SINCE THE GROSS VEHICLE WEIGHT RATING (GVWR) IS STATED INCORRECTLY, THESE VEHICLES FAIL TO COMPLY WITH THE REQUIREMENTS OF PART 567, “CERTIFICATION.”

Risk: CUSTOMERS MAY UNKNOWINGLY EXCEED THE GVWR. EXCEEDING THE GVWR OF THE VEHICLE, CAN LEAD TO LOSS OF VEHICLE STABILITY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2018009 3,073 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the passenger frontal airbag module. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace the passenger frontal airbag module before their function would be affected.

Recall 2011442 38 units in Canada

Label

On certain vehicles, the compliance label does not contain the correct Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR). The label incorrectly indicates a GVWR of 5,225 instead of 2,370, and a GAWR of 2,612 (front) & 2,756 (rear) instead of 1,185 (front) & 1,250 (rear). As such, the vehicle could be unwittingly overloaded, which would result in poor vehicles handling characteristics, increasing the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Updated labels will be mailed to owners of affected vehicles, along with instructions for proper installation.

Recalls cover specific build ranges, so check your own vehicle by VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls or, in Canada, Transport Canada.

POWER TRAIN

I was driving my 2012 Jaguar XF on Highway 75 my car began to go from drive to neutral and changing gears on his own and I almost got hit by a semi-truck with the vehicle slowing down eventually I made it home with the vehicle and put it in park and never came out park again, the gear box had locked up that I was told by a local Jaguar repair shop. I could have lost my life that day with that car doing this and someone else can lose their life if this happen to them if you all don't make Jaguar fixed this problem, if it already hasn't happen to someone. I reported this problem to Jaguar today and they sound like they weren't interested in what I was telling them. They said they would open and case and they will close it. Do that make sense to you to open a case and close it?

IN 2012 JAGUAR HAD A RECALL ON SOME OF THEIR FX MODEL CARS DUE TO FAULTY FUEL TANK FLANGE ISSUES THAT COULD CAUSE THE CARS TO CATCH FIRE. THE NHTSA CAMPAIGN # WAS 12V521000, THE RECALL # WAS: J027 & THE POTENTIAL NUMBER OF UNITS AFFECTED WAS 4,195. IN THE DOCUMENT I'VE ENCLOSED, YOU'LL SEE THAT MY VEHICLE HAD THE EXACT SAME ISSUE WITH THE OIL LEAK AND CRACKED FUEL TANK FLANGE THAT OTHER CARS WERE RECALLED FOR IN 2012. I INITIALLY NOTICED A STRONG FUEL SMELL IN MY GARAGE AFTER TURNING THE CAR OFF AND CLOSING THE GARAGE DOOR ABOUT 1 WEEKS AGO. MY NEXT DOOR NEIGHBOR ALSO COMPLAINED THAT SHE SMELLED THE GAS FUMES IN HER HOUSE LAST WEEK, BUT NOTICED THAT THEY WENT AWAY AFTER I REMOVED MY CAR FROM THE GARAGE AND PARKED IT OUTSIDE. I CHECKED JAGUAR'S WEBSITE AND ASKED MY JAGUAR SERVICE ADVISOR IF THERE WAS A RECALL ON MY VEHICLE BECAUSE I'D PREVIOUSLY READ ABOUT THE FUEL TANK FLANGE RECALL, BUT BOTH SOURCES DID NOT CONFIRM A RECALL ON MY CAR. I CALLED JAGUAR THIS MORNING WHILE AT THE DEALERSHIP WAITING FOR MY CAR TO BE SERVICED, AND WAS TOLD THAT THEY RECALL WAS VIN SPECIFIC & IT WAS INDEED FOR THE SAME EXACT ISSUE I HAD FIXED TODAY. I'M CONCERNED THAT I WAS DRIVING AROUND IN A CAR THAT JAGUAR HAS KNOWN TO HAVE A SERIOUS ISSUE THAT COULD'VE RESULTED IN MY CAR CATCHING FIRE, YET MINE AND OTHER JAGUARS WHO MAY HAVE HAD OR MAY HAVE THE ISSUE ARE STILL ON THE STREETS. DUE TO THE SEVERITY OF THE MATTER, I WANTED TO BRING IT TO YOUR ATTENTION IN HOPES THAT YOU CAN INTERVENE WITH THIS SERIOUS SITUATION.
