AIR BAGS: AIR BAG/RESTRAINT CONTROL MODULE

Kia Motors America (Kia) is recalling certain 2010-2013 Kia Forte, Forte Koup, 2011-2013 Kia Optima and 2011-2012 Kia Optima Hybrid and Sedona vehicles. In the event of a crash, the air bag control unit (ACU) may short circuit, preventing the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners from deploying.

Risk: If the frontal air bags and seat belt pretensioners are disabled, there is an increased risk of injury to the vehicle occupants in the event of a vehicle crash that necessitates deployment of these safety systems.

THE DEALER REPLACED THE ENGINE UNDER WARRANTY, BUT THE FAILURE RECURRED. FOUR MONTHS LATER, WHILE DRIVING VARIOUS HIGH SPEEDS, THE CONTACT HEARD A CLICKING NOISE AND SMOKE ENTERED THE CABIN OF THE VEHICLE. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO THE DEALER AGAIN WHERE IT WAS DIAGNOSED THAT THE INTERNAL ENGINE SEIZED. THE VEHICLE WAS NOT REPAIRED DUE TO THE LACK OF WARRANTY COVERAGE. A POLICE REPORT WAS NOT FILED FOR EITHER FAILURE. DURING BOTH OCCURRENCES, THE SMOKE WENT AWAY ONCE THE ENGINE WAS TURNED OFF. THERE WERE NO INJURIES. The contact stated that while driving and depressing the brake pedal, the vehicle failed to respond as intended, causing the braking distance to become extended. The vehicle was taken to the dealer, where the contact was informed that the vehicle could not be diagnosed because the message was no longer displayed. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was unknown.

The contact stated that the vehicle was unsafe to drive and could not be driven to the dealer for the recall repair because the dealer was 2 hours away. The dealer was not notified of the failure.
