NHTSA investigations into the 2007 Lexus IS 350

An investigation is the step before a recall: the agency has seen enough complaints to look into a pattern itself. An open one means it thinks something may be wrong and nothing has been fixed yet.

Desiccated Air Bag Inflator Rupture

From 2000 through 2017, Takata produced millions of air bag inflators using two types of phase-stabilized ammonium nitrate ("PSAN") propellant -- propellant 2004 and propellant 2004L. After prolonged exposure to high temperature cycles and humidity, inflators using propellant 2004 can degrade, causing the propellant to burn too quickly when ignited. The rapid burning can cause the inflator to rupture during deployment, potentially causing serious or even fatal injury to vehicle occupants. Recalls on the 2007 Lexus IS 350

A complaint is one owner's allegation. A recall is the point at which the manufacturer or a regulator agreed the defect is real and dangerous enough to fix for free — however old the car is.

Due to anti-corrosion plating remnants, fuel may leak from where the fuel pressure sensor is attached to the fuel delivery pipe.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

13V395000

ENGINE

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2007-2011 Lexus GS350 vehicles manufactured June 19, 2006, through July 12, 2011; and model year 2006-2011 Lexus IS350 vehicles manufactured May 27, 2005, through July 13, 2011; and model year 2010-2011 Lexus IS350c vehicles manufactured November 25, 2009, through July 19, 2011. These vehicles, equipped with the 2GR-FSE engine, use bolts to secure the housing and sprocket of the Variable-Valve Timing (VVT) system gear assembly. These bolts could become loose due to abnormal impacts generated within the gear assembly immediately after a cold start-up.

Risk: The loose bolts could cause the VVT gear housing and sprocket to separate and result in the engine stopping while the vehicle is being driven, increasing the risk of a crash.

13V030000

VISIBILITY/WIPER

Toyota is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 Lexus IS250 and IS350 vehicles manufactured August 23, 2005, through October 5, 2011; 2010-2012 Lexus IS250C and IS350C vehicles manufactured April 10, 2009, through October 6, 2011; and 2008-2011 Lexus IS-F vehicles manufactured December 14, 2007, through July 10, 2011. The nuts that fasten the wiper arms may be insufficiently torqued such that if the wiper arms are restricted by an external load, such as a buildup of heavy snow, one or both of the wipers may become inoperative.

Risk: Inoperative wipers could reduce driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

10V309000

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE

TOYOTA IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2006 THROUGH 2008 LEXUS PASSENGER CARS MANUFACTURED FROM AUGUST 26, 2005 THROUGH AUGUST 4, 2008. MICRO-FOREIGN OBJECTS IN THE MATERIAL OF THE VALVE SPRING MAY DEGRADE THE STRENGTH OF THE VALVE SPRING, POSSIBLY CAUSING THE SPRING TO BREAK.

Risk: THE ENGINE COULD FAIL AND STOP SUDDENLY WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH.

Canada — Transport Canada

Canada runs its own recall programme, and its campaigns do not always mirror the American ones.

Recall 2017007 130,661 units in Canada

Airbag

On certain vehicles, long-term exposure to high absolute humidity and temperature, combined with high temperature cycling, could eventually degrade the propellant contained in the passenger frontal airbag. This could cause the airbag to deploy with more force than normal. As a result, if the vehicle were involved in a collision that warrants airbag deployment, fragments could be propelled toward vehicle occupants, and the airbag assembly could be damaged, preventing proper function. These issues could increase the risk of injury. Correction: Depending on the model, dealers will either replace the passenger frontal airbag inflator or airbag assembly. Note: Canadian climate results in the propellant degrading slowly. The recall is being conducted as a precaution to address future risk, and is expected to replace airbag inflators before their function would be affected.

Recall 2014458 18,949 units in Canada

Fuel System

On certain vehicles, the fuel delivery pipes in the engine compartment may have been produced with particles from the anti-corrosion plating on the gasket seating surface where the fuel pressure sensor is installed. This could affect the sealing properties of the gasket seated between the pressure sensor and the pipe, potentially resulting in a fuel leak. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could result in a fire causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will replace the gasket and repair the gasket seating surface.

Recall 2013297 3,922 units in Canada

Engine

On certain vehicles, the bolts used to secure the housing and sprocket of the intake-side Variable-Valve Timing (VVT) gear assembly could loosen. If this occurs, the VVT gear will not control the intake valves correctly. In some instances, the VVT gear housing and sprocket could separate, causing the engine to stall. Engine stalling would result in a loss of vehicle propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic and road conditions, and the driver’s reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will replace the VVT unit with an improved version.

Recall 2013031 16,756 units in Canada

Visual System

On certain vehicles, the wiper arm securing nuts could have been insufficiently tightened during assembly. If the movement of the wipers is restricted by an external load, such as heavy snow on the windshield, the wiper arms could slip and one or both wipers could become inoperative. If this occurs, driver visibility could be reduced, which could increase the risk of a crash causing injury and/or property damage. Correction: Dealers will clean the mating surface of the wiper arm and motor shaft and install improved wiper arm nuts.

Recall 2011037 11,773 units in Canada

Fuel System

On certain GS 300, GS 300 AWD, GS 350, IS 250, IS 250 AWD and IS 350 vehicles, the fuel pressure sensor connected to the engine fuel delivery pipe may not have been sufficiently tightened during vehicle assembly. Should the pressure sensor loosen, fuel could leak past a gasket used in the connection between the sensor and pipe, and through the threaded portion of the sensor. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a fire causing property damage and/or personal injury. Correction: Dealers will inspect for fuel leakage from the threaded portion of the fuel pressure sensor. If there are no signs of a fuel leak, the fuel pressure sensor will be tightened to specifications. If a fuel leak is confirmed, the gasket between the sensor and the fuel delivery pipe will be replaced, and the sensor will be tightened.

Recall 2010221 3,702 units in Canada

Engine

On certain vehicles, the material composition of the engine valve springs may include micro-foreign objects, which may compromise the strength of the valve spring, causing the spring to degrade and break. If a valve springs breaks, abnormal noise and rough engine performance will be noticed and, in the worst case, the engine could fail and stop suddenly while the vehicle is in motion. A sudden engine failure would result in lost propulsion which, in conjunction with traffic, road conditions, and driver's reactions, could increase the risk of a crash causing property damage, personal injury or death. Correction: Dealers will install new valve springs.

Recall 2009290 437,445 units in Canada

Other

On certain vehicles, the accelerator pedal may become stuck in the wide open position due to an unsecured or incompatible driver's floor mat. A stuck open accelerator pedal may result in very high vehicle speeds and make it difficult to stop the vehicle, which could cause a crash, serious injury or death. Correction: Dealers will reconfigure the shape of the accelerator pedal. Certain models will also have the shape of the floor underneath the accelerator pedal modified and/or a brake override system installed.

Recall 2009015 8,391 units in Canada

Fuel System

On certain vehicles, the use of selected ethanol fuels may cause the aluminium fuel rails to corrode. This could result in plugged fuel injector(s), causing a rough engine idle and/or the illumination of the engine warning lamp. Corrosion may also cause a pinhole to develop on the fuel rail, which could result in fuel leakage. Fuel leakage, in the presence of an ignition source, could result in a vehicle fire. Correction: Dealers will replace the fuel rails.

THE MANUFACTURER WAS MADE AWARE OF THE FAILURE AND PROVIDED CASE NUMBER: 1709051152, WHICH WAS AN EXTENSION FROM A DIFFERENT CASE NUMBER. THE CONTACT WAS AWAITING A CALL BACK FROM THE MANUFACTURER. THE FAILURE MILEAGE WAS APPROXIMATELY 120,000.

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

I BOUGHT MY CAR USED IN 2015 AND ABOUT 1,000 MILES AFTER DRIVING IT OFF THE LOT THE AIRBAG LIGHT CAME ON. I TOOK IT TO THE LOCAL LEXUS DEALERSHIP AND THEY DIAGNOSED IT AS THE DRIVER'S KNEE AIRBAG AND SAID THE ENTIRE AIRBAG WIRE HARNESS NEEDED TO BE REPLACED AND QUOTED ME $3,500. I LOOKED UP THE ISSUE AND FOUND THAT LEXUS HAD PREVIOUSLY ISSUED A TSIB ON IT (L-SB-0167-08). I ALSO READ MANY OWNERS AROUND THAT TIME WERE ABLE TO GET IT FIXED UNDER WARRANTY (72MO OR 70K MILES). UNFORTUNATELY THAT EXPIRED FOR ME 2 YEARS BEFORE I EVEN BOUGHT THE CAR. I'M VERY FRUSTRATED THAT THEY KNOW THIS IS AN ISSUE, THAT IT'S RELATED TO AIRBAG SAFETY AND THEY ARE STILL ASKING ME TO PAY THOUSANDS. IT'S BEEN TWO YEARS AND THE LIGHT IS STILL ON. PS: THE DEALERSHIP TOLD ME SEVERAL TIMES THAT I WASN'T AFFECTED BY THE TAKETA RECALL BUT I LATER GOT THE RECALL NOTICE.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING

LOW BEAM HEADLIGHTS KEEP GOING OUT. I HAVE DIRECTIONAL HEADLIGHTS THAT WHEN I TURN MY VEHICLE ON, MY LIGHTS WILL TURN ON (IF DARK ENOUGH OUT) AND THEY MOVE POINTING DOWN AND THEN UP. WHILE DRIVING THEY ALSO DO THIS AND GO LEFT TO RIGHT. WELL WHEN I FIRST START MY CAR THEY BOTH WORK. AS SOON AS LOWBEAMS MOVE STRAIGHT TO DOWN AND THEN TO UP, ON UP MOVEMENT MY DRIVER SIDE CUTS OUT. DOES NOT TURN BACK ON.
